I would lose my recess privileges and my friend always asked the teacher if he could stay inside with me and keep me company. She always let him. I want to go back there and have a friend like that again. Continue reading

My Papa always took me places and we had more fun just getting there (or not) than we did when we actually got there. There’s a lot to be said for enjoying the journey. Going through rural Alabama, you always pass a lot of small churches with some of the best messages on their church signs. Continue reading

Over two years after her death, I still get about one letter or correspondence a week related to “Aunt Ruby.” Not my Aunt Ruby, but other people’s Aunt Rubys. Continue reading

Not really a nice way to ask that question is there? Honestly, I was just pondering the white sand versus brown sand conundrum and thought I would consider the question. Continue reading

He caught me outside recently and hit me with an interesting request. It seems that our police chief in charge of the fellows who gave him the citation said it might be a good idea to take someone with him to court who knew the dog. Continue reading

The way I figure it, one person gets mad at another and reports them. Then the violator, in an attempt to either justify their infringement or to get back at who they think reported them, starts pointing fingers. Continue reading

It’s difficult to describe, but it’s so distinctive. When you hear the “chik-chik-cha-chik,” followed by the “ding,” and the dragging “ziiiiiiiiip.” If you’ve heard an old typewriter, you don’t forget the sound. It is somewhat difficult to describe, but it’s one of those things that you can identify pretty easily.... Continue reading

As for the term, we’ve all heard it, the origin although seemingly to be of American invention, probably is not. Younger folks probably thing it was invented by the folks who wanted to worry about Ralphie shooting his eye out with his Red Ryder BB gun in the movie, “A Christmas Story.” Continue reading

I found myself in a bar on Easter morning... It couldn't have been better. Oh, and I got to eat my first Dip Dog too! Continue reading

Being alone, I wasn’t in a hurry and I took my time making my stroll from my car to the front door. I passed a man, perhaps about my age, as he was walking with a lady who was hunched over and using a cane. Continue reading

Mabel probably didn't think someone would be reading her postcard over 50 years later - I was. I paid a dollar for the postcard and Mabel’s words. It was worth it. Continue reading

About every week or so, I get a call from somewhere in rural Cleburne County, Alabama. I’m not sure what the place is called. It has to be somewhere around Turkey Heaven, Trickem, Lecta or possibly Edwardsville. Continue reading

Usually I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, but last night I got up all night. I got up and continued to ask the owl why he couldn’t just give it a rest. Honestly, I enjoy the sounds of a hooting owl, but... Continue reading

More interested in the sermon and studying the congregation, unscrambling my word would have to wait. I started wishing that some of the folks from earlier in my life were there to enjoy this fine sermon that was being delivered. Continue reading

From my December 12, 2016 newspaper Column... Maybe you can start getting ready early... It's just 11 months away. Maybe you could go ahead and get in line for the buffet or find where they hide the raffle tickets... Continue reading

That’s where my dogs, Doolittle and Maddie, come in. I’m pretty sure since I’ve switched over to free antenna television, I left the TV on while I was at work and they saw the movie. They must have wanted to get in on the danger and trickery and helping rabbits move from their warren. Continue reading

I think about this because of all of the bickering we are having all around us after the latest round of politics. It seems like folks are always wanting to start a feud or a fight without realizing the consequences or the waste of time. Continue reading

Watching the smoke come out where it was supposed to, made me think about the future – not just turkeys, chicken, steak and Boston Butts, but my future in the coming year. People are working on their New Year’s resolutions this time of year, the things they want to do or do without. Continue reading

What brought this to mind was a recent conversation with my son who told us he had spent $500 on his textbooks for this term and he still had to get two more. My college loans upon graduation totaled $600. Continue reading

Recently, a friend of mine told me his daughter was stopped by airport security in Charleston, South Carolina, because they thought she was a “mule.” Knowing this fellow well and his daughter since she was tiny, I first needed clarification of what a mule was and why someone would think this nice college freshman was a mule. Continue reading

We were stopped at the traffic light exiting my neighborhood the other day and a fellow pedaled his bicycle across the four-lane highway into our neighborhood. He was older and looked familiar. Continue reading

The question I get most often as a statistics instructor, "What should I study in preparing for my final exam in statistics?" I usually say, "Everything you have been taught, everything you were supposed to read, all the types of homework you did and then do it all again..." Continue reading

A student once asked me a great question, she asked, "What affects confidence intervals?" In other words what makes them wider, more narrow, etc. First of all for the same mean and standard deviation, the higher the confidence, the wider the interval. I often give the analogy of a farmer with a field full of cattle; the more distance between his/her fences, the more confident they are that they have "captured" their cows... Continue reading
