Thanks Lesley! I so enjoyed that class and would love to take another with Janet. She's wonderful!
A class with Janet Bolton
Yesterday's class with Janet Bolton was really fun. Janet is so warm and full of stories. We got to see many of her finished works that were for sale, though no photography of them was allowed. Fortunately, there were some other pieces that were okay to photograph. My favorite was this bla...
Hi Renae,
I have only used this technique for art quilts, so I've never washed one. I did hand wash a sample once and there was some fading. I would suggest doing a test sample. You might find other ideas online for how to set the color. I am not using this technique any more, so I'm not really an expert. Kristin
Adventures with Caran D'Ache Neocolor II: Watch Your Step
I have been wanting to try using watercolor on fabric for a while now. It started with the beautiful AAQI quilts that JoAnn Stowell has been doing. Since I discovered her work last year I think I've bought three of them! I asked her about her technique and discovered that she's been trying...

Hi Jerry,
I have certainly made and donated many quilts over the years, but this one doesnt ring a bell. I think you may be trying to contact someone else. Do you have a photo of the quilt you could send?

If you haven't read Ahab's Wife yet, I think it would be a great accompaniment to Moby Dick. It's also great on its own. It's one of the rare books I've read twice and would read again.
ten things
Another Monday morning after a busy summer weekend, with a long to-do list ahead of me. But I'm moving slowly, because oh, all of it feels so good and full, and the sun is shining and the garden is growing, and children are outside playing, and there is sure to be a lake swim later in the day. O...

Thank you Gail! Cards that are received by April 15th are juried to choose cards for professional framing. These include cards that the Quilter's Affair teachers donate, winners of any contests that are going on, and the best of those received by that date. They frame a lot of cards ( I think 70-80 were framed last year) and the framing is all donated so they need plenty of time to get that all done by July. The framed cards are done by silent auction over the period of the week before the quilt show. The silent auction items have had a Buy It Now price of $250 in the past.
All the rest of the cards, plus those that come in after the April 15 deadline are separated into those that will be sold as is- I think those are $5, some are placed on a piece of mat board and sold for $20 or $25. Sometimes teachers send multiples or there are others that come in after the framing deadline that have exquisite hand stitching or other reasons that they are worth more. Those are then sold for $75. This is all what has been done in previous years, but not necessarily what will be done this year.

SOQS 2015: Fabric Postcards
I have several fabric postcards to turn into the quilt show this year. Today I'm showing the three that were made from the challenge fabric (the blue on the bird and cat and the green on the dog). The first two are made with all new fabric. The last one... Continue reading

Hello Jane, Thank you for alerting me to the issue with Feedburner. I wasn't aware of that. I am in the process of changing blogging platforms and it may take a bit to get things sorted out. If you are on Facebook, you can like my page: https://www.facebook.com/KristinShieldsQuiltmaker?ref=hl I always update that feed with new blog posts. For the time being I don't think I'll have a subscription option here. Sorry about the confusion! Kristin

Today's post is all about Improv! Hurray, my favorite category in the whole show deserves a post all to itself. There were lots of improv quilts in the other categories, but this was the highlight for me. For those who don't know, the categories were decided by the QuiltCon folks. So, one wo...
Thank you Debbie. So, about choosing categories, I found it very disconcerting that they pick the category for you, but you are supposed to submit one quilt per category. Very confusing. I am interested to find out what sort of new categories will be introduced for next year.

Today's post concentrates on two categories: Use of Negative Space and Piecing. Remember, these are all clickable to see more detail. Also, remember this is my take on the show and I don't have photos of every quilt. Please alert me if you notice that I've made a mistake on the attributions....
