ANTWERP
Owner / Business Manager of Meeting Media Company; Niche MICE (meetings industry) publishers (MIM magazine and HeadQuarters Magazine) since 1992. Editor in chief of MIM and HQ magazines.
Interests: I travel a lot for work and I meet lots of people, especially in the meetings industry. And each time I think by myself: 'Damn, if only I could make everyone part of this moment or this conversation.' I can't write everything down in my magazines, that would bankrupt my little publishing company immediately… I was thinking: making my own blog would enable my readers to respond to my statements and conceptions. And I could show my favourite snapshots in an instant. Diane Pernet's blog 'A Shaded View on Fashion' served as an exemplar to me. The real breakthrough came late last year, when I was tempted to play Socrates with two colleagues. We agreed to ask each other questions for 15 minutes but not give any answers. It was an astonishing moment. 'I have to tell this story to everyone', I thought. And now I can! I still owe you this story.

Don't forget your Chinese hat at the ICCA Gala Dinner on Tuesday, 5 November 2013. I was looking around, and found a diverse range of Chinese hats. I have already made my choice. You will see me with: Below are some other examples for your inspiration! Continue reading

In October half the meetings industry will be travelling to Shanghai to celebrate, amongst other things, the 50th anniversary of the ICCA. That’s quite an achievement for an association. On average I visit Shanghai a couple of times every year. Over time I have discovered quite a few of the city’s prettiest spots (best restaurants) and I would like to... Continue reading

There are still a lot of favourite things I'd like to do during my travels. Have you ever had that feeling too? And guess what? I visited the Land of 17,000 Islands (www.indonesia.travel) earlier this year and nearly all my dreams came true. Unbelievable. Do you know that Charlie Chaplin (1932) was an admirer of Indonesia, especially the Island of... Continue reading

A visit to a small town in the southern part of The Netherlands awakened me from a deep hibernation. Indeed, art has aroused my urge to blog once again. So now I'm back dear reader, please accept my apologies. Every year there is an event on my wish list that I would not miss for anything in the world. I've... Continue reading

Kids like to dress up. Is that the same for adults? I think so, the only difference is that adults have to rediscover that feeling and this is not always an easy thing. We want to dress formal with not too much colour. We want to be one of the thousands, not exceptional. That is the main psychology when talking... Continue reading

Take a map of Asia Pacific, erase Taiwan and ask a hundred people where it’s supposed to be. Less than ten of them will point at the right spot. Still, Taiwan has been nominated, together with three others, for the ICCA Best Marketing Awards this October in Puerto Rico. Not for all the money in the world would be a... Continue reading

Faithful readers of my blog know by now that when I’m in a new city, I'm always looking for a few nearly extinct professions. A shoe-polisher, a barber, an extraordinary (usually small) museum and old-fashioned shops and cafes. In Johannesburg I discovered the best shoe polisher of the Gauteng province. He had installed himself at the entrance of the beautiful... Continue reading

Is getting an award important for a person? I think so. I want to justify this thought with an example that touched me deeply. Every year during the AIPC conference somewhere in the world, there is an evening called the 'Award Dinner'. It’s when the Apex Awards are given out. This year, Amsterdam had the honor, and the venue of... Continue reading

I’ve never used poetic license while writing blog entries. That’s something for real writers. This will be my first attempt, writing about princesses and princes in the Meetings Industry. It all started on a cocktail party in my own country five years ago, when I – spontaneously – called Evelyne Bardyn “Princess of Flanders”. It must have had a reason.... Continue reading

Qatar in the year 1970 What would you do when your country consisted of a big sand bowl, tents and camels? Nothing probably, because there isn’t much you could do. Until oil is struck. That’s what happened in Qatar in 1950, and it was the beginning of the construction of a new country. And the end is not yet in... Continue reading

There are many good fathers in Sri Lanka. I know, because it's my favorite island. Every year I spend a few weeks there, for an Ayurveda session with my good friends from The Barberyn Beach Ayurveda Resort in Weligama (www.barberynresorts.com). Two years ago, my other socially engaged friend John Janssen from Antwerp (www.mandiricraft.org) told me that a remarkable man lived... Continue reading

CEO Isabel Bardinet of ESC (left) talking to Inge Hanser, Managing Director of CPO Hanser Service (right). And what are they talking about? Que sera sera. Isabel's view on the future of the PCO inspired me to tell my personal story (history) on the perception of a PCO in the past. Whenever I’m in Paris, I’m always humming the tune... Continue reading

Once a year rays of beauty descend from paradise to brighten our little earth. “Why here, precisely?” my friend and contemporary art lover Johan de Bliek asked me. Both of us couldn’t come up with an fitting answer. Johan de Bliek, contemporary art lover: "TEFAF is unique in our art world". But we know one thing for sure: TEFAF or... Continue reading

I visited my UIA (Union of International Associations) friends this week, people I sometimes describe as monks and nuns, doing painstaking work in the field of Association Research. While on the train to Brussels, I read there are seven billion people walking our planet today. In 1850 we were just one billion strong. Going from one billion to seven billion... Continue reading

I’m almost certain of the fact that the most important furniture pieces in the Meetings Industry are a table and a chair. And perhaps the chair is even more important than the table. But you can’t just sit on chairs – it’s much easier if you put them around a table. This amusing thought came to me on the eve... Continue reading

Specially for this Season's Greetings, I put on my best suit. Better meetings make better people At the end of the year it’s always good to have a story to tell. In one way or the other, there’s always a need to say a few words when something comes to an end. This is how our true story began. A... Continue reading

EIBTM 2011 was better than all the other editions. As I already told you in previous blog texts: this fair has a high sex appeal. No other fair can compete with that. EIBTM is warm, cozy, colorful and a place where good business can be done. 2011 was a particularly good year. Reed is doing better and better in Barcelona.... Continue reading

In the past, London disappointed me a couple of times. Once because the weather was truly horrible (which is of course no one’s fault) and another time when I saw the city tumbling down in the meeting statistics list. But last summer, my love for London was flourishing again like never before. Just to be clear: my love for Barbara... Continue reading

When Datuk Peter Brokenshire, GM of Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), once told me that everything revolves around food in Malaysia, I thought: isn’t that somewhat the case everywhere around the world? Everyone loves to eat, right? After my second visit to Kuala Lumpur in early October I have to agree with him. There are few countries in the world... Continue reading

When I told my friends I would be staying in a 7-star hotel for a few days, hundreds of questions were fired at me. Well dear blog readers, I hope you’ll understand I can’t answer all of them. Usually I don’t pay much attention to “wonders of the world” when I visit a country, but this time I did. I was in Nairobi for the African Meetings Industry Summit (see my previous blog entry) when my African brothers and sisters told me that a miracle was going on. I thought I almost witnessed one when Dirk Elzinga announced... Continue reading

Do miracles still happen in the Meetings Industry? I don’t think so. Does the expression “making history” still exist in our industry? I’m having a hard time looking through my archives to find a fact worth mentioning in this light. But during my visit to Kenya, I witnessed one important event that just might make it into the global Meetings... Continue reading

San Diego was always kind of a distant reality to me. What more could I possibly learn there? The only thing that could have attracted me was the constant magnificent weather. But I still boarded an American Airlines flight (www.aa.com) to the West Coast anyway. The immediate cause was the annual AIPC conference (www.aipc.org). The first lady spontaneously greeting me...
