I rarely go to Facebook. So tired of seeing updates from people I barely know. The updates tend to be "boastful" in nature - so that pisses me off more ;) I can see most people using facebook without visiting it often - I like the timeline feature they announced because it serves like a diary. I can also see advantages in making social graph portable. Coming back to your point on connecting with fans - the messages feature was intrusive to begin with.
