I would like: - More sorting options - Separate queues for each family member BTW, I found out a couple of things that some may not yet know, so I thought I would share the info. I called NF customer support because I was unable to add titles to my IW queue. My queue was showing 350 titles, yet when I tried to add a title I would get a message stating that my queue already had 500 titles, so it wasn't added. This is caused by the saved queue we can no longer see. Yes, prior to losing the ability to see the saved queue, mine contained 150 titles that were once available to stream, but are now unavailable. It turns out that only happens when you try to add from certain search result pages (i.e., search for an actor's name and then try to add titles to your IW queue from the results list.) If you view the actual page for the title, you can successfully add the title to your queue. This can be a bit of a pain, if you want to add multiple titles from a single search, but at least it is a viable work-around. The other thing is that, according to the CSR, even though Netflix and Quikster will be completely independent websites, there will still be links from Netflix to Quikster for titles that are only available on disc. So if you search for a title on Netflix that is not currently available for streaming, you will get a link that will take you to that title on the Quikster page so that you can add the disc to your queue over there. The CSR wasn't sure if there would be links going the other way (from Quikster to Netflix, indicating a title is currently available for streaming if you are looking for the disc.) I imagine they would want this, as they would prefer to push people more to streaming. Obviously this feature is only meaningful if your membership includes both discs and streaming.
Regardless of any justification for the price increase and service changes or whether or not it is still a good value, the official communications from Netflix have been interpreted by many as misleading at best; half-truths and blatant lies at worst. There is a substantial lack of trust. When combined, the action and words of those running Netflix have taken a significant portion of rabid fans who were more than willing to sing the praises of the service and put them in an "us vs. them" mindset. That is never a good thing for a company and Netflix faces a long, uphill battle to win back their hearts, no matter in what direction the company goes.
Okay, by now we all know that Reed desperately wants to kill off DVD rentals so that he can go streaming only, but he wants to do so in a way that will not tarnish the Netflix name (too badly). That's why he's splitting it off, renaming it Quikster and separating it completely from the Netflix website with no integration. Even if it isn't sold off to another company, he can simply let it die off. He's already been choking off DVD and BD purchases over the last couple of years, so it's not that big a step to just stop buying new ones altogether. Here's the big problem with this scenario: He'll never get a complete library of titles in streaming without charging customers cable-level prices or, at the very least, pay-per-view for new release titles or multiple tiers of service. What made Netflix great was the combination of discs and streaming. Via discs, nearly every title, including new releases, was available. Via streaming, there were tons of titles available every day with no wait, including many that are unavailable on disc. It was a one-stop shop, which is what every consumer wants. Anytime you wanted to watch something specific, all you had to do was check Netflix. Unless it was obscure, they usually had it. Now, with it's watered-down selection of streaming titles that is incredibly expensive to maintain and supplement, it is like searching the bargain bin at Walmart. To find what you want, you will likely have to search multiple places -- and potentially multiple companies. As such, Netflix is destined to fade from popularity. Honestly, despite what Reed says, this is not splitting apart two incompatible services. This is taking a full-service company and making it a limited-service company. He had what most consumers consider an ideal company and is throwing it away, because he can't make things work the way he desperately wants them to. In the end, Amazon will end up eating Netflix's lunch. Why? Because Amazon offers streaming as an add-on -- not the sole thing the company offers. Plus, they've got tons of money and, as you can see from the latest announced deal with Fox, they will eventually build up their catalog of titles to match or beat Netflix. My prediction is that Reed has left himself with an escape. Despite what many think, he will not sell off Quikster. If (when) this plan to put all of his eggs in one streaming basket fails, he will simply reintegrate discs and streaming, drop the Quikster name and spend a few years apologizing and trying to woo back all of the alienated customers with special deals and price-cuts. If that happens, will Netflix be able to fully return to its former glory? That all depends on how well other established and new start-up companies step up to take advantage of Reed's stumbling.
Netflix has the Wonder Years on streaming... ...oh, wait. They only said they were getting the Wonder Years on streaming. It never actually materialized.
Am I reading this right? $30 million per picture? So, just 10 films will cost Netflix as much as the entire Starz library would have? That's nuts!
If they get this thing passed, it'll probably end up working similar to that Beacon system that FB had going on a few years ago. Even if you choose to opt out of sharing your Netflix data with your friends, that data will probably still be passed on to FB, who will turn around and share it with every partner and affiliate they have (aka, everybody).
Oh Hay-ell no! Guess what, Drobac? I HAVE the choice to share anything I want with my friends. What you are asking for is the ability to make that choice for me...and then some. You'd better start greasin' some more palms, 'cause you're not getting my help. Stay outta my FB profile Netflix -- I don't remember "Freinding" you.
Yeah, I can't wait until the day when tons of people roll out of bed in the morning, login to Facebook and come to the sudden realization that every one of their friends, family and coworkers now know that they were watching Redneck Vampire Whores from Alpha Centauri last night. There's a reason this law was put on the books. Most people are fairly secretive about the freaky, depraved, skanky things they do in the privacy of their own homes. Netflix logs a good chuck of it and Facebook desperately wants to flaunt that to the world. If I want to recommend a movie or show to my friends, I'll post it myself -- preferably after I've seen it, not during. I don't need or want Netflix and Facebook putting it all on display and selling it to every frickin' last partner and company on the web.
Do you want to let Netflix/Qwickster know how much you hate what they are doing? Whatever you do, do not go streaming only. That is exactly why they are doing all of this; they want to push as many customers as possible into the streaming only plan to kill off DVDs as qwickster...uh...quickly as possible. If you want to show them that it is a bad idea to screw with their customers, go DVD ONLY. They expected some to cancel. They hoped that most would switch to streaming only to save money. When most kept both (maybe dropping a disc or two to cut costs) they dropped this bomb to try and force us to do what they want. Don't let them push us around! Drop streaming and go DVD only. When they've got 18 million Qwickster customers, a handful of streamers and the rest cancelling, they will finally realize the customer is king! We will fully adopt streaming and drop physical media when we are ready and not one minute sooner!
It would be more appropriate to start asking if anyone is NOT having streaming problems tonight. It seems like this is becoming an everyday thing. I used to get flawless results with my Roku. Those days appear to be over. I can't tell you the last time I was able to watch anything in HD for more than 60 seconds. Most evenings I start out at 3 dots and within 5 minutes it rebuffers to 2. Even at 2 dots, a 40 minute show is interrupted to rebuffer at least twice. Sometimes while rebuffering, I will get kicked back out to the menu. In addition, within the last week, even Netflix.com isn't working half the time. I can stream Amazon content in HD without interruption. My 50/5 internet connection tests fine and I am able to download and stream other content quick as a wink. It's just Netflix. If things don't improve soon, as much as I have loved Netflix IW over the last year or so, I think I'll have to quit using it because it is just too frustrating. The crappy 2 dot quality looks worse than OTA programming on an old rabbit-ears tube TV. Needless to say, I'm ramping up the disc usage again.
