Living away from home often makes me feel homesick. Reading your wonderful posts makes me feel like being back home virtually at the moment. I'll be back home in August for 3 weeks and I have already planned Sunday lunch at Archontiko Papadopoulou. Great post!!!
Archontiko Papadopoulou - Papadopoulou Mansion - Kornos, Cyprus
When the weather says so, Alkis and I enjoy a Sunday outing and lunch in the nearby countryside. Last Sunday, we visited the village of Kornos and had a memorable lunch at Archontiko Papadopoulou. That lunch was for us the best gastronomic experience of the Greek-Cypriot cuisine we've ever had. ...
Such a lovely place! I was there a week before you for dekapentavgoustos. It was crowded but we enjoyed the holiday weekend.
Platres, Cyprus - August 2011
Located on the southern slopes of Troodos Mountains at 1200 metres above sea level and at about 40 km from Lemesos - the second largest city of the island, the picturesque village of Platres is the jewel of mountainous Cyprus. With the highest temperatures ranging between 1C (38F) in th...
When I'm in England, I really miss sheftalies. Of course there are many Cypriot restaurants where you can have them, but they taste nothing like the ones of home. It's the first thing I want to eat once back home in the summer. .
Monday's Greek Recipe: Sheftalies - Grilled Minced Meat Rolls
Sheftalies is a traditional Greek Cypriot dish which is, however, widely known in mainland Greece as well. Just like there's a fish and chips outlet in almost every neighbourhood in the UK, in Greece and Cyprus there's at least one "souvlatzidiko". This is a kind of fast food outlet where you c...
I tan quite easily but, regardless, when at the beach or at the pool, I never forget my sunscreen.
How To Treat Sunburn
Maybe you skipped the sunscreen because you didn’t think you’d be outside for very long, or perhaps you forgot to reapply after a dip in the pool. Whatever the reason, your skin is red-hot to the touch and seriously painful. Now what? You can pop an aspirin and apply a standard drugstore treatme...
I cook soutzoukakia smyrneika in the same way but I also add cinnamon and some lemon juice to the meat and serve them with steam rice and a salad (tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, cabbage, caper, fresh coriander, onion rings, feta cheese and oregano)
Monday's Greek Recipe: Soutzoukakia Smyrneika
Ingredients (a) For the soutzoukakia 1/2 kilo beef minced meat ground twice 2 cloves garlic, grated 4 large slices stale village bread without the crust 1 tbsp olive oil 1/2 tsp cumin powder salt, pepper, oil for frying (b) For the tomato sauce 1 onion finely chopped 1 clove garlic finely...
I am obsessed! I clean top to bottom 6 times a week and I am a fanatical neat freak too!
Folders, Subfolders and Other Organisational Issues
It seems that my biological clock hasn't been set to summer-break-time yet, so I got up at 6:00 this morning, as I always do on Saturdays when I work. After a hearty breakfast taken on the veranda with Alkis, Alkis went to work and I was left to decide what to do with the rest of the day. I ...
It's been years I haven't been to Protaras. We usually spend our summer holidays in Paphos where I come from. But after reading your post, I think we'll make time to visit Protaras this summer. I guess it must have changed a lot since the last time we visited back in the 90s.
Relaxing in Protaras
Protaras is by far my most favourite summer resort in Cyprus and, more generally, in the eastern Mediterranean. With 300 days of sunshine, golden sandy beaches, clear waters, great hotels and a myriad of restaurants and bars, it's no wonder why European holidaymakers flock to Protaras every ...
I live in England so in the summer I look forward to spending a long holiday in Cyprus visiting friends and relatives, doing water sports and having fun on the beach.
Summer Break
The school year may have already come to an end but I've still got work to do such as preparing final reports. This is the hardest time of the school year for me as I need to be just and fair in my assessment of my students' performance. Most of them did well in their final exam despite the fac...
I got Genie from a friend whose cat had given birth to 6 kittens. I got the ginger one. She is now almost 3 years old. We all love her so much and the kids take good care of her. They know now that they have their share of responsibility. Pets make our lives lovelier and prettier and all they ask from us is love and care.
Cat's Life
Second only to dogs, the most common pet in Cyprus is the cat - most often the common moggy. The Greek Cypriots get their pet cats from all sorts of places: some people choose their cats from pet shops or friends. Others prefer to adopt feral cats or strays. It seems that something in the flow...
Although I love cooking very much, I'm not good at baking pies! I find your recipe very clear and easy and I'll definitely give it a try.
Monday's Greek Recipe: Prasopita me Kima - Leek Pie with Mince Meat
Not long ago, I posted the traditional Greek leek pie recipe which basically consists of leeks, feta cheese and onions. Here's a variation on the same theme - leek pie with mince meat for the meat lovers. Ingredients 10 pastry (fyllo) sheets 6-7 leeks 4 eggs (beaten) 400 gr beef mince m...
It was real fun reading these definitions. Thanks for sharing.
Clever Definitions for Familiar Words
This is what I got in my inbox yesterday and had such a good laugh that I thought I'd share it with you. It was sent to me by my friend Walid who I'd like to thank for brightening up my day. These fit so well they should be in a dictionary. ADULT A person who has stopped growing at both en...
Anastasia, I've just realised that I put my comment in the wrong place! I'm so sorry about that. As for my prom, I missed it because I had broken my leg the day before. What a luck! But the next day, all my classmates visited me at the hospital and told me all about it. It was so sweet of them.
End of School Year: Let Prom Start
End of May calls for school celebrations all over the island of Cyprus. High school graduates, in particular, are preparing for their final exams, looking forward to adulthood and a promising future career but also to proms soon after exams are over. For most high school graduates it's a specia...
I used to have very bad eating habits and as a result I had health problems like high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Instead of taking medication, I decided to become vegetarian. Within a few months my blood pressure and cholesterol dropped to normal. I eat lots of veggies, nuts, legumes, potatoes and rice, pasta with no eggs but no dairy products or fish.

Beautiful song by Simon and Garfunkel. I love it just like many more of their songs. I also enjoy the outdoors, playing board games, knitting and going shopping when I can afford it.
Work and Leisure
All work and no play may make Jack a dull boy but it certainly doesn't make me a dull girl! I've often shared my thoughts about my work and how much I enjoy working with children even though they are occasionally trying my patience! It's that time of year again when work is more important than ...
This is the best post I have read on Mather's Day! So loving and tender.
Mothers and Daughters
My mother and I don't always get along very well. More often than not, it seems that one of us is saying the wrong thing, presses the wrong buttons and, as a result, our conversations tend to be quite explosive! Yet, in our heart of hearts, we know that we love each other dearly. I always felt, ...
