The icy wave rushed, kicked his shins, hard enough he wondered about bruising. Wondered if it was possible to leave a mark on him, however impermanent, and watched as she shimmied sideways to avoid the chilly, punitive embrace around her ankles. Her retreat matched the ocean’s; hasty, apologetic, saying sorry,... Continue reading

there isn’t a beginning here. not because i am stingy with my startings, or ashamed, or coy. i simply can’t give you what i’ve never found. perhaps that’s why it’s taken so many months to come here again. but a story must start somewhere, so i’ll give you a counterfeit... Continue reading

it’s time for a confession. i know, yes, i confess here all the time, it seems to be the purpose of this compendium, a sifting of my digital detritus that drifts through the aether to shimmer vaguely on your screen. but this is serious. this is something hidden, something never... Continue reading

i’ve had cave bears on my mind lately. ah. let me go back a bit. it all began with netflix. i’ve a few hundred items in my queue, yes, i am an addict, the worst kind, a junkie aesthete, though a full third of them are tv shows, which means... Continue reading

there is a series of strands, seeming random, anything but, that connects all art. a fine web that weaves the word to the note, the note to the color and the form and the movement. when viewed singly, these threads are insubstantial, snapped and easily stranded without context. floating. unanchored.... thanks for your words, tonio. they mean a lot. it can be difficult for people to understand the occasional need to shore up. simply tread. it really helps me to know that i have wonderful friends who will buoy me against a current that sometimes pulls too deep. much love.

exactly. sometimes there’s just a system overload, and we need to shut off for a while. reset. let everything settle, then come at it anew. i didn’t understand that about myself for a long time. but now that i know, now that i can see when the circuits are heating up, it’s easier to regulate. and easier to power up again. thanks, gideon.

there comes a moment in most relationships i’ve had, friend, lover, confidant, acquaintance, when the discussion turns to personality types. we seem in constant need to label ourselves, to find ways to make sense of our predilections by assigning a word to why we do what we do. i’m fascinated... it's amazing what hurts we'll endure. and yes, the instincts! where do they come from, i wonder, that our first thought is not breaking the thing, instead of not breaking ourselves. so fascinating! it sounds like a painful recovery, but i'm glad you're all healed. and i think there's a lesson here: always use the buddy system when traversing a wrap-around porch. :) thank you for sharing your story, karen. *whispers* and well done on not breaking the glass. ;)

i think it's something we've all experienced at some point, to some degree. it's all about the getting back up, isn't it? thanks for the comment, gideon. it's much appreciated. :)

ah, tonio, you've got it. it's all about not apologizing. to others, or to ourselves. we want what we want, yes? thanks for your comment, and your encouragement. there are many thresholds, i think. it's going to be a constant crossing. a constant adventure. and i'm glad of it. :)

this is a story i’ve never told anyone. this is a story i’m telling you now. it’s not a bad story, although i get hurt. it’s simply one of my many collisions. i believe, though i’m not certain, that i was 10 years old. i don’t remember where i was... Continue reading

i had a conversation recently with a co-worker about the word “normal,” in which i stated “i think that ‘normal’ is the most destructive concept ever visited upon humanity.” strong words, yes. but remember, please, i’m a scot. this is just the way we talk. i was very high and... Continue reading

i’m not one for resolutions. i figure that if there’s something that needs doing, you simply suck it up and do it, declarations be damned. and if it needs doing, it mostly likely needs doing now. i’m a girl who likes action. forward movement. what comes next. i don’t wait... Continue reading

too many days since i’ve put down words. too few reasons for this absence. when i wrote first of my father and his passing, i thought there, that’s it, i’ve defined the landscape of my grief, and open, now, i can begin to find my way forward. i was so... Continue reading

I’m a game-player. As in, board, card, word, and the like, not as in I’ll say one thing and mean the other and be so passive aggressive about everything that eventually you won’t be able to tell what the hell you really wanted in the first place but are quite... Continue reading

I apologize in advance if it takes a little while to get to my point. I’m a natural born procrastinator, you see; due to circumstances beyond my control (not at all, a joke, a lazy excuse in the shady blaming of genetics) I’ve never done today what I could put... Continue reading
