Thanks MN! Yup, that's right. People often divide literature into poetry and prose. Prose is literature where language is used to explain and idea, whereas in poetry, language evokes it. Examples of prose writing might be a short story, news article or essay.
There's a good definition of the difference between poetry and prose on this website, including a fun quote I hadn't heard before:
