Joe Hedrick, LS, EIT | Team Manager Right before the Christmas holiday, Autodesk quietly released the Civil Engineering Data Translator for Autodesk Civil 3D 2019. Getting it installed was the easy part… finding it was another story! Once I installed it, I went to the usual location within Civil 3D in Toolbox but it wasn’t there. To make a long story short, this cloud-based extension now runs outside of Civil 3D. You can find it in the Autodesk folder of your start menu: Upon launching the extension, you are immediately prompted to log in with your Autodesk account: The interface... Continue reading

Joe Hedrick, LS, EIT | Team Manager As we continue our look into the Autodesk Civil 3D 2019.2 update, Autodesk made a small, but very useful enhancement when data referencing sample line groups. When data referencing sample line groups, Civil 3D will now automatically create references to the sampled sources within the sample lines if references do not already exist in the drawing. In this example source drawing, several Civil 3D objects exist and data shortcuts have been created: In a new drawing, upon creating a reference to only the sample line group, Civil 3D now will create references to... Joe Hedrick, LS, EIT | Team Manager This week, I would like to discuss a very useful feature enhancement included in the Autodesk Civil 3D 2019.2 update. Because it is somewhat hidden in the ribbon, you will likely need to know about it to find it! During the course of a design, it is very useful to display “linear” crossings in profile view. We have always been able to show where pipes cross, but this tool is intended for items like alignments, other profiles, and feature lines. Imagine you were designing a street that tied into an existing road. It... Continue reading

Joe Hedrick, LS, EIT | Team Manager Transparent commands have been in Autodesk Civil 3D since the beginning versions but still remain a highly underutilized part of the program. This could be because they work differently than most other commands in AutoCAD and Civil 3D. Up until this most recent update, these commands are most easily accessed via two toolbars docked vertically on the right hand side of the screen (by default). These tools are meant to be invoked while you are within a different command. As an example, since I frequently work with land surveyors, one of the transparent... Continue reading

Joe Hedrick, LS, EIT | Team Manager As mentioned in last weeks post, automated PDF creation was added to Vault Professional beginning with the 2018 release. Let’s face it, most of us ultimately create PDF’s of our plans for submittal purposes, archival purposes, or to just have the ability to disseminate the design to a larger audience. Depending on the size of the plan set, this potentially could take quite a bit of time for someone to manually create. Vault now has the ability to create PDF’s in an automated fashion but there are a few caveats to keep in... Continue reading

Joe Hedrick, LS, EIT | Team Manager For the past two weeks, I have been writing about some recent experiences of a client using Autodesk Vault Professional. Specifically, I discussed project archival and user defined properties on project folders. All of this is driven by a central Vault concept called categories. To complete the topic, I thought I would spend a few minutes talking about revisions. In the civil engineering world, we don’t tend to think about revisions the way that Vault does out of the box. Most of us don’t produce rev 1, 2, or 3 or A, B,... Continue reading

Joe Hedrick, LS, EIT | Team Manager Over the last several years, I have found myself implementing Autodesk Vault Professional for a growing number of Civil clients. As our industry continues to acquire and consolidate, more and more people are turning to Vault to help connect geographically diverse project teams. A few months ago, I was working with a client that was a new IMAGINiT customer. They had an existing, replicated Vault setup containing about 1500 projects. The purpose of my visit was to take a look at how they were doing things and make recommendations. One item that struck... Continue reading

One of my favorite new commands included with Autodesk Civil 3D is the Drawing Compare tool. Imagine this scenario... you have been working for days on a site layout. Once complete, the file is sent off to the powers to be for review and comment. A week or two later, the file comes back with a few "modifications". What is the best way to figure out what changed? What was moved? Added? Deleted? For simple drawings, this is a relatively easy thing to spot, but this is much more difficult in busier drawings. Consider the following two drawings: Original: Versus... Continue reading

April showers bring... the 2019 version of Autodesk products! Historically, when the weather starts to warm up, Autodesk releases its new product versions and this year is no different. In fact, most (if not all) of the AEC Collection has been released! From a Civil/Survey/GIS perspective, all of our main products are ready to go. Autodesk Civil 3D, Autodesk Infraworks, Autodesk Vehicle Tracking, and the new one AutoCAD (which contains Map 3D and Raster Design tools) have all been released. Check your Autodesk Account or the Autodesk Desktop App to get started downloading them. Stay tuned to future blog posts... Continue reading

Happy Friday to everyone! Since I personally worked with 3 different clients this week on this very topic, I thought I would remind everyone that Autodesk has posted a a hotfix that usually improves the open times of Civil 3D drawings. The versions affected are drawings that were created with Civil 3D 2014-2017. If you have drawings that were created and last saved with any of these versions and are experiencing abnormally long load times, keep reading... The fix can be found here. Earlier this week, I was with a client that had a file approximately 2mb in size. Very... Continue reading

For everyone running the 2017 version of IMAGINiT's Utilities for Civil 3D, I wanted to let everyone know that we recently released an update that resolves a handful of items. Our utilities check for updates every 2 weeks so everyone should be prompted by now, but if not, select the "About" icon and select "Check for Updates". The below screenshot shows the most up to date build number: While this was largely a bug fixing update, we did slightly modify the ribbon to make AUTOOFFSETLEGACY easier to find. When we revamped and updated the AutoOffset routine to create AUTOOFFSETPRO, we... Continue reading

At the end of November, Autodesk released an update to Project Kameleon. For those unfamiliar with this technology, Project Kameleon is a stand alone parts editor that promised a new way to create drainage content for both Civil 3D as well as Infraworks. With this update, it appears that the scope of the project has expanded and now includes pressure pipe content as well as a way to author bridge abutment types for Infraworks. This is definitely gaining traction within Autodesk as I heard the project referenced many times at Autodesk University last week. Project Kameleon is free to join... Continue reading

As we prepare for the upcoming holiday season, Autodesk gave us their gift a few days early. A few days ago, InfraWorks 360 2015.3 was released. Upon installation, the first thing you will immediately notice is a redesigned home screen: Autodesk has been working hard as this release is chocked full of enhancements: Model animations Model Builder enhancements Network drive support Drainage design enhancements Project Kameleon content editing and authoring Enhanced interoperability between InfraWorks and Civil 3D Collaboration enhancements New data export formats Circular tunnel style for rail Corridor optimization (preview) enhancements Sustainability maps (preview) Autodesk Field Assets for Infraworks... For everyone that was in Las Vegas last week for Autodesk University, I hope you had safe travels home. From a presenter's perspective, I would say it was another successful conference. It seems like the conference themes this year were BIM, collaboration, cloud based technology and computing, and 3D printers. If you weren't able to make the pilgramage to Vegas this year, don't fret. The class recording are beginning to appear on AU Online. From this webpage, you can search the content from the previous several years conferences. This is great for anyone who couldn't make the conference or for... Continue reading

At the end of June, IMAGINiT released an updated version of our Utilities for Civil 3D. This version is now compatible with Civil 3D 2015 and includes a few notable enhancements. The AutoOffset command saw the most love from the developers. This command now creates alignment station offset labels in a dragged state instead of just static text strings. As you would imagine, once the command has been run and station offset labels are placed in the drawing, they will react and update if the alignment changes. Because we are placing alignment label objects, they react just like any other... Continue reading

A few months ago, we released IMAGINiT Utilities for Civil 3D 2014. Thanks to everyone who has provided feedback so far! One of the issues reported to us involved not being able to transform the Google imagery into any drawing that was based on the Canadian Spatial Reference System (CSRS) datum. This issue occurs because Autodesk does not distribute the transform file needed with the installation of Civil 3D. To obtain version 2 of the Canadian National Transformation, you need to visit Geodetic Reference Systems. The National Transformation (NTv2) can be found at the bottom of the page after clicking...
