"The next year we go 12-0, nobody even comes close to beating us,” he says with a chuckle, reflecting on the 1987 team that went on to win the school’s second national championship. The Hurricanes won their third title in 1991." Is the writer from the O-Sentinal a Croc fan? The Canes won their 4th title in 1991! I have to say that with all the ridiculous talent that wore the U on their helmets during that time that what often gets lost is the stellar coaching talent that was on the sidelines!

Seriously about Richardson? Don Soldinger anyone? Posted by: The Dude | February 06, 2013 at 01:23 AM You seriously have to consider the timing of this. Jedd knows all too well the importance of NSD - 86, do you know if he left on good terms? Maybe this had something to do with AC heading to Hogsville. I have been hoping that Soldinger gets involved somehow, someway for sometime.

Soup, et al - Any word on the street as to any favorites for the OC and WR coaching positions?? BTW, Soup - I know you do keep in touch with some former Canes. Any idea as to how Edge is doing? Just haven't heard his name in some time and he was one of my favorites to watch on both Sat and Sun.

Forgive me as I don't recall if Monty is also a Pens fan (I assume a Habs fan?), but outside of him, does every other person on this blog like the Pens? Never have been, never will be - But I do respect them for what they've done and have no beef with them. I'm a Wild fan (and Sabres fan)...and a huge hockey fan! BTW, if you are a hockey fan, the Minnesota Gophers vs. North Dakota (no nickname yet, fka the Fighting Sioux) game this past Sat night was lights out!! Greatest college hockey rivalry out there and unfortunately just ended. It was the last regular season mtg until 2016 as next season MN will be part of the new Big 10 conf and ND in a different conf. This time $$ ruined something special. At least I was able to watch college hockey while the NHL got its $h!t together. Go Wild!

OGV - I'm with you on that. I even had a thought that she did what she did so as to show the bastards at the NCAA that there is nothing bigger than the integrity of Miami Univ. blah, blah, blah knowing that it will more than likely be a matter of a few short months before the decision is handed down and then she can "welcome them back". I'm not sure I would go that far considering that there should be some posture put up by the U, but I'm not in her shoes. Just really rubs me the wrong way. What was built in CG re the FB program is once in a lifetime. Don't phuck with it.

Up North - Let the haters hate. Wife, girlfriend, grandma - you can't control 'em all. I suppose I'm supposed to believe that Suggs' comments after the game were straight up classy? Dude's never been to the big dance before and is acting as if he's Lawrence Taylor or something. I have nothing against the Ravens - in spite of Suggs. I, too, have yet to decide who I'm pulling for in two weeks. I'm still not happy by either of the Pat's coordinator's performance in last night's game. No matter, the Ravens deserved to win and honestly, I hope there are some big changes in the off season in NE.

86 - Gracias! Sorry for any trouble - couldn't figure out what was happening. Thanks, too, for the trip down memory lane with some of the names I haven't seen in forever! Crazy. Some other I thought of were: Ron Mexico Mary (alumni gal) J mephistophiles Calvin Cavalier I hope all is ok with Esteban, Six, and VA Cane.

Posted by: TonyCane | September 25, 2012 at 10:26 PM I may be a touch more optimistc than you TonyCane. If we win our next 2, one of which is on the road vs a top 10 team, I will go out on a limb and say we get to between 17 or 19. But yeah, beating NCST and getting ranked is a stretch. It will really depend on how we win. Posted by: The Dude | September 25, 2012 at 10:30 PM If Miami win they will be ranked...BUT ONLY for television marketing purposes. The world of college football is shameless and they will find a way to get the Canes ranked, even if it's #25, so as to market it as a battle of two ranked teams seeking a return to national prominence, yada, yada, yada... I honestly could care less about rankings. I know it goes against human nature, but I wish the team would view the process as one play, one series, one quarter, one half, one game at a time. Everything will take care of itself

This to me demonstrates how poorly UM football has been run from 2007 to the 3ed week of 2012 How our progress from 2007 til now compares with other teams rebuilding in 2007 Alabama 2007 7-6 current rank #1 FSU 2007 7-6 current rank #4 S Car 2007 6-6 current rank # 7 Stanford 2007 4-8 current rank # 9 ND 2007 3-9 current rank # 11 KSU 2007 5-7 current rank # 15 Lvlle 2007 6-6 current rank # 20 UM 2007 5-7 current rank # 53 I'd go on but I got vomit on the keyboard Posted by: solarcane | September 18, 2012 at 08:30 PM Solar - Great analysis!! It sure is very telling. If anyone should see this, it needs to be the Don. Or at least those in charge of hiring the HC. I understand that for the most part, the academic aspect of the U has improved. Does it really have to be one or the other?! The Ivy Leaguer of the West doesn't believe so as Stanford demonstrated. Should the U? Is it a lack of commitment from the top? A series of bad decisions? Both? Whatever it is, it needs to change and in a big way in a big hurry. Hell, we thought we waited a long time when RS was hired. The Don should be bringing AG coffee in the morning as she is on strike two and behind in the count...

I haven't seen a moment of the action, but from the posts, it appears as though the score is not very indicative of the way the U is playing?? 38-10 isn't a demolition, but certainly not a nail biter. Hell, VT scores just 17 vs. Pitt & MD is losing to UConn, but as I noted, I haven't seen one play. And as I have posted many times, I was hoping against all odds that Butch would return to coach. I have no issues per se with AG, but to me, it's a toss up as to which was more impressive - Schnelly's or Butch's rise of the program from the ashes. The both are for the ages - and we were all fortunate that they took place in CG. I pray we can add AG to that HOF list!
Sorry, went all Mr. Troutman there for a minute. Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | September 13, 2012 at 10:15 PM OGV, that was classic!!! I sure hope TROUT is doing well. 86 - What's the word on Sr. seis?

It's very difficult to wrap my mind around the fact that it has been 11 years since that fateful date. And to this day, I still get teared up when those moments are relived. I did not have anyone I knew die or injured, but I cannot imagine what they have had to go through because of those who are simply evil - That includes all of the men and women who were called to duty and have served our country so admirably. Their families also are to be given high praise and our full support. May God Bless America!

Some great posts from Zakkee re conformity, the Dude, CoCane, SJM, and others. I'm sorry, but, ok, we can say Miami needs more talent and that will get them on the right track again. People just got all over RS's a$$ week after week and said that what amounted to the #1 recruiting class wasn't really that talented after all - really? What is it as you can't have it both ways. Let's imagine that same class ended up in Bama, would we really be saying the same thing? Nobody's mentioned what ranking KSU earned for its last 4-5 recruiting classes, but somehow they were big enough, fast enough and talented enough to be the 21st ranked team in the nation and having won the Cotton Bowl last season. Does anyone remember just how bad it got in Manhattan before Coach Snyder returned? Now who's laughing? How piss poor were Wisconsin, Oregon, Stanford and they have been highly ranked teams in recent years? I hated the D scheme last season, last week and this week I thought I was going to go insane - thank God I DVR'd the game and couldn't watch it live. I sure as hell hope that AG came to Coral Gables to unleash the emotion of the Miami players. RS tried to corral it and of all the people in the world, I would never have thought it. And look what it got him. I am not calling for AG's head yet, but before he was selected as HC, I was calling for Butch Davis. Of course NC'S infractions timed with Miami's current investigation doesn't make that work so well. However, I would think that Kehoe would be the link that could guide AG as to what was done to create the most dominant program in a generation. AG needs talent, but what good is it if you don't use it. Someone in CG needs to know how to unleash the beast. I don't care if you have to use your own funds and pay Schnelly and JJ for consulting, but if Miami could be dominant with four different coaches, then there is an answer. It pisses me off and pleases me at the same time that players who played for mediCoker and RS make it to the NFL and succeed at high levels while the U has been average at best. Like I said, if you don't know how to drive the Porsche, then it's only as useful as a Malibu.

* Belichick on McCarthy: "Does a lot of things for them. He plays a decent amount in the deep part of the field in their 2-Tampa scheme as a middle linebacker, and where he's running deep with those vertical routes down the middle, things like that. “But of course he's involved in the running game at the line of scrimmage, mixing it up inside, taking on centers and guards and fullbacks and all that. He's got a good set of skills. I think he's very instinctive and adept in pass coverage. “Seems to have real good feel for route combinations, recognizing where the quarterback is trying to go with the ball, he anticipates well, get a good break on the balls, got his hands on a number of balls, interceptions. He ran one back for a touchdown against Arizona. “He definitely on film looks like he's the leader of the defense in terms of signal callers and making adjustments and checks and that kind of thing. I see the other guys looking at him, I also see him kind of taking control of the situation. He's a guy that has really come on quickly and done a good job in all phases of the game. The running game, zone defense, man-to-man defense. “He makes plays up inside against big people in the running game, middle of the line, and he gets to the sideline, get outside on the perimeter plays, and be a factor on those screen passes, wide routes outside. He can run well and gets outside and can make plays. "He's a real good football player who's come on quickly and looks like he's a good middle linebacker."

Props given to C-Mac by Josh McDaniels-Pats OC: "I mean this is a group that has really good players at all levels of their defense and can apply pressure with their front four. Their linebackers get involved with the blitz game, I think Colin McCarthy has really kind of stood out to me and some of the things you see this guy do on film, he’s a really disruptive pass defender for a Mike linebacker." It does make you wonder why more success was not realized on the field while he and other recent Canes wore the Orange and Green. Graham, C-Mac, Hankerson, Bosher, and you can go back to Calais Campbell (just got nice pay raise), Kenny Phillips, Beason - those few names off the top of my head never saw the U be the U, but are performing quite well in the NFL. Hell, the vast majority of those that came out this past draft made the team (even if on the practice squad). Just sayin'

For some, the light bulb turns on later, but the fact that it's on is what counts. Former beguiled Cane, Marcus Forston, received some nice props from one of the great coaches of our era during a recent press conference: What Forston did to earn a spot - Rookie free-agent defensive lineman Marcus Forston (Miami) was a surprise inclusion to the initial roster. What did he do to earn that spot? "Just the daily consistent performance," Belichick said. "It's no one thing or one play or one day, but guys that can earn a spot on the roster do it with consistent performance relative to the competition. He did enough to do that." I posted this the other night after he learned that he made the team: A tip of the cap to Marcus Forston. I know he has received his fair share of criticism during his time at the U, however, tonight, he gets to celebrate being part of the 53 man active roster of the Super Bowl contending New England Patriots. For those who don't recall, he went undrafted. From ESPN Boston - "Defensive lineman Marcus Harrison: Harrison flashed a quick first step during camp, but didn't do enough to outshine a number of young linemen on the Patriots' defense, including Marcus Forston, the undrafted rookie out of Miami. Defensive tackle (5): Vince Wilfork, Kyle Love, Brandon Deaderick, Ron Brace, Marcus Forston Forston, a rookie free agent from Miami, might be the most surprising addition to initial roster. Didn't see that one." I wish him the best. Unbelievably, if I recall correctly, the first former Cane to be cut was Roscoe Parish - Earlier this week. Does AG watch film w/ just his coordinators? If so, man would I love to be a fly on the wall when he sits down w/ D'No. Is there really anyone who can explain the philosophy D'No uses to defend the pass? I had to watch the game at the in-laws - I think this was God's way of saving my tv. Although, not being able to express my emotions more than just subtly couldn't have helped the blood pressure. Duke has "it"...and BIG time! I'm one who doesn't care about the score - just win, just win. Congrats on the first one fellas!
