But maybe we can do some good anyway.

Apparently the hold-up on the Rollins deal has been that Kemp needs a physical before his trade can be official. Since one of the pieces in the Rollins trade is allegedly from the Padres, they can't make any move until after that portion is complete.

MG: Your timeline on cost-savings is a bit off.
Pence was traded to SF on August 1st of 2012. Victorino joined the Dodgers on 7/31, but Blanton was claimed off waivers on 8/4.
So, in point of fact, they didn't know they'd have Blanton's salary off the books until after Pence was traded. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't really know about Vic's coming off the books until after the Pence trade was agreed-upon either, given the less-than-24-hours time differential between both trades being completed.

Hopefully Crawford and Quinn can bring a bit of that, and Utley may step up a bit too - he's already been talking more to the media and (purportedly) his teammates as well in recent years.

Chung: They got $50K a piece. If the selecting teams don't keep them on the 25-man for the full year, they must be offered back for $25K per (so, net gain of $25K).
I suppose a question would be: how many of those guys do you believe will spend 162 games on the 25-man roster?

Also, can I say how amusing I find it that, less than 5 hours after JW tweeted about the Beerleaguer consensus being that the Rollins trade was a good one, we get as many new arrivals that say it was terrible?
If there's one thing we know, it's that the BL consensus is that there is no BL consensus. And even if there were, it has to be wrong.

Red Sox rotation still looks pretty rotten, honestly. Porcello's an upgrade, but if he's your #1 in Fenway then those Yankees/Red Sox games will hit 6 hours more often than 4 this year.
They probably feel a little more secure now, but I'm sure they'd much prefer Hamels to anchor that thing. Especially since they have zero lefty starters right now.

Zoo With Roy actually has a very nice tribute to Jimmy, all things considered.

Well that scuttles the Utley-to-LA rumors. Unless the Angels need a 2B now (sort of LA)?

GBrett: That's also true, but there have been claims that a third (dare I say, Mystery) team is involved as well.

Bubba: If the assertion that they're trying to get a 3rd team involved is true, then I can understand why nothing is public yet. They can't make it known what pieces might be involved that aren't guaranteed to be involved yet.

Pretty sure there's nothing official on Rollins yet.
Bastardo deal was a lowball offer, but it was the last year of a reliever's contract, who's coming off a down year.
And again, I invite someone to provide actual evidence that we've Gillick is doing anything. Although I suppose that's of secondary importance to proving that Gillick leading the rebuild would be noticeably better than anybody else (because if not, who cares if he's leading it?).

Make that "6-year."

Traded Howard, ate $58MM of his remaining contract, and got back Michael Martinez, fresh off his $6-year, $80MM extension.

If only because the only way they get that much of a better lineup is if some of those upper prospects (like Alex Guerrero) join the MLB roster, thus depleting the farm.

Johnson isn't the only member of their ownership group. They're actually owned by Guggenheim Partners, which is a global investment firm, which is even filthier-rich than Magic alone.

Also... Did the odds of packaging Hamels and Bastardo just fly upwards?

Scherzer's allegedly holding out for 200+, but I think that was partially predicated on Lester taking home 175. I could see him standing for ~170 now, over 5-6 years.

That's... A lot less than some were thinking, but still makes Hamels' contract very attractive. Especially since Scherzer's allegedly going to hold out for "15% more."
