New figures in from the CDC (Center for Disease Control) reveal shocking rises in rates of A.D.H.D. (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) diagnoses. We have reached an all-time high of 6.4 million children from ages 4 through 17 labeled “A.D.H.D.” This is a 53 percent rise in the past decade. Additionally, about two thirds of these children are prescribed stimulants to aid them in coping with their “chemical imbalance.” Better yet, the American Psychiatric Association soon plans to alter the definition of A.D.H.D. to allow more people to receive the diagnosis and treatment. This past August, alumnus Amy Rouse '01, led students and faculty on an in-depth tour of the Guilford flora. Since her time at Guilford, Rouse has studied medicine making, nutrition, anatomy and physiology, wild crafting, gardening, botany, and pathophysiology, taking in this practical knowledge from many teachers in many habitats spanning the nation. Needless to say, Rouse had much more to offer the Guilford community than just a breath of fresh air and a morning traipse through the woods.
