I still have a couple of pairs in rotation
laurel burch
A couple years ago I was out to dinner with a close friend, exactly my age, who was wearing Laurel Burch earrings. She kept them from the 80s. I had totally forgotten about Laurel Burch but when I was in middle school they were a big deal. I usually stole my mom's, but I had a few paris of m...
I love to camp, but it is surprisingly annoying to be trapped in your tent in the morning because a bison is lounging about just outside the door. You have to wait; you can't hurry them. They are both cranky and fast moving.
Clara Parkes' "Knitlandia," and a Giveaway!
To me, traveling has always been rife with the unknown, but in a bad way. There was once a multi-week trip to Mexico on a Mexican train when I was about 10. Let’s just say, it was the trip from heck. To list just a few items on the itinerary: A man got decapitated on that train while sitting o...
I take as long to get around to reading blogs as it takes me to put up a new post. With the quicker forms: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram I tend to "fill up my time before I have visited all of my old friends. If you decide to get a tattoo I hope you will post that. I have not - all my children have some kind of ink, but I have never seen anything I wanted to see forever on my skin so it's just wrinkles and age spots for me. On your past post - Cape Cod is likewise amazingly white. It's the single whitest place I have ever lived and it seems so odd.
a little red hen pecks in again...
"Could it be, yes, it could, something's coming, something good," a line from an all-time favorite of mine, the musical Candide. [That's the 2005 version; mine was the original, 1956.] Oh it is tempting to get diverted here. But that will not excuse my drift from blogging. Call it old age, ma...
Turkey thighs! No turkey breast or turkey roll for me.
Turtlepurl Yarn & a Contest!
Genevieve and her fiber dyeing team of Turtlepurl have sent us an awesome batch of their Turtle Toes striping yarn and Glitter & Stripe yarn! You might remember this yarn as not only coming in fun, trendy colorways, but also in two matching 50g skeins so that you get two perfectly matching socks...
Oh the sweetness of puppies!
New Grandkids
A whole litter of them! Just look at this face....heart be still!
You look wonderful - and pink is definitely your color!
May Day May Day
...can be a good thing. :) Had so much fun at the beautiful May Day celebration at my grandkid's school yesterday. I'm doing great. So sorry I am so lost to my blog, I think about you everyday. It is just so much easier to go to facebook. : / But then, what kind of writer is THAT?
If she had left Bill she would likely not be in public life now - no 2008 run, no Sec'y of State. no run for 2016. Those birds work as a team, and the unfortunate Monica would not have been the first indiscretion she turned a blind eye to. I will vote for her if she is the Democratic candidate in 2016, but I will not be thrilled. IHMO she is not a person of strong principles and only honest when there is no other choice. After "knowing" her all these years I still cannot say with certainty what her opinion is on any issue and if I guessed I could not say with confidence that she would act according to that opinion. She's smart & savvy though, and may do very well.
My Hillary rant--Brenda reminds me
Sitting in that chair last week. That iconic chair, one step away from therapy--or maybe instead of. Brenda raised the scissors. First, "So you want it shorter this time?" Settling into my answer, "Where are you in the latest Hillary thing?" I sigh. Immediately taken back to 2008, and disa...
Nice catch - that's a beautiful rainbow. Every time I post a picture it's white white and more white. I am so eager to see any outdoor color besides white or brown. I hope spring is on its way to you.
My former subway station makes front page
Karsten Moran, New York Times photographer, took the hit for me. I thank him for being my stand-in last Monday at the 125th Street stop of the #1 subway. Yes, there's a certain nostalgia as I remember standing on that windy, outdoor platform in wet weather. And slogging down the first flig...
Little girls' leotards give you great results for little effort - fun!
small needlework: flower-type things
I got all weird a few weeks ago about this Japanese craft book, Embroidery pattern & brooch Small flower embroidery that I bought and had trouble sleeping for a few days. I got this out of my system by stitching this. It's my own pattern but heavily influenced by some of the designs in this...
Beautiful, dreamy pictures and your little one looks like a precious princess. Enjoy your mild weather; here on the east coast it's just a faint memory.
Pretty in Pink
We went for a Valentine's walk on Saturday. Sixty-something degrees and sunny. Apparently we've skipped winter entirely and moved straight to spring. Our walk was just a tiny portion of one we'd taken several years ago (Walk 6...
Oh, your beautiful hair. But you still have your beautiful life and your smile so all is well. May the next year bring you more joy and fewer challenges.
The Year That Flew By Slowly
It was January 3 of last year that my biopsy was performed and I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It has been a long year of surgeries and treatments. Hair loss. Weight gain. Nails lost. Skin changes. Scars and burns. Looking in the mirror and wondering just who was looking back at me. ...
Arm warmers would be nice,or maybe a pretty cowl.
Hello There! What I did on my Vacation and a Giveaway.
Well, now that THAT's over with, I can get back to "regular" life. Seriously, first you face Halloween, then a tornado sort of begins to swirl and you end up in some sort of angsty vortex until it's New Year's Eve and you just want it all be over with. Then, you spend New Year's Day watching TV,...
She's just delicious! Happy New Year to you. I wish you a year of joy and comfort.
Mare Albalee Birdsong
I'm so sorry it took me so long to update. Starting back to work and then struggles with radiation kept me distracted. Things are smoothing out again. :) Yes! Little baby girl was born early Thanksgiving morning. She was welcomed, at home, in a warm birthing tub, by her mama, papa and 2 midw...
I've got the urge to bake some bread too. Something about the cold weather makes me long for the yeasty smell of fresh bread. Yours looks good - nice solid loaves. Happy New Year to you, and good things coming in the coming year.
Another sourdough bread triumph gets blog moving...
Yesterday's satisfying Sourdough Bread with Cornmeal was a real triumph. Though I have way too many bread cookbooks--several purchased in the last year and delightful to read/try--this time it was the Google that led to Israeli Kitchen because I'm a big fan of cornmeal. To begin, I needed to...
I think Lena Dunham is talented and original. I hope this early success an exposure will not have a detrimental effect on her. I won't be reading her book - at 65 autobiographies by people younger than my own children have little interest for me. My reaction tends to be along the lines of "some day, I hope very soon, you will understand that better"! All of my personal regrets have to do with things I did not know at the time.
a cyclops snowman cookie
For a couple years now we have had friends over to decorate Christmas cookies during the day. Hooray for homeschool flexible scheduling! Otherwise, I don't know how this would happen this time of year. I make a double batch of sugar cookies a few weeks before and freeze them and take them o...
Magic Loop for plain socks, double points for patterned. Wood or bamboo for lace or ribs, metal for cabled.
Sixth Day of Sock Yarn
On the sixth day of sock yarn, Simply Sock Yarn gave to me... a Bird Leg Bag and Simply Sock Yarn Solids! To have a chance at this gnome-yTall Skinny bag and coodinating skeins of Cherry Red yarn, simply answer the following question in the comments below: What's your preferred method for knitt...
I would have a hard time giving those up too! So charming.
small needlework gifts
I stitched these little gifts last weekend. They are framed in 3" hoops. I didn't stitch them in this size hoop though, it's too small to work with. To finish them, I glue a felt circle on the back. Then I sign and date them. Sometimes I accidentally write the wrong year on one of them, like "...
sounds like everything is ready for the little princess. Good luck to all of you: an easy labor and a healthy baby.
Creepy But Cute
My son Alex doodles these little folks everywhere. He calls them Creepy But Cute. So I found this particular doodle on my calendar. I had the fun idea to surprise them and make it into a doll for their soon to be born baby girl. It's a little scary maybe, but she will grow up with his doodle...
I will probably add this to my reading list, but Angela's Ashes put me into such a rage I was angry for weeks. My family suffered (not nearly to the same extent) from my father's selfishness and irresponsibility. Reading that book brought back to me the things I did without (dental care, school supplies, opportunity) as a child. It's a good thing to learn about people who pulled themselves up though.
required reading
I'm a pretty independent, go-my-own-way reader. I'm happy to recommend books, but I rarely press them onto people because I'm not that keen myself on being told what I ought to read (as opposed to what I might enjoy reading). Having said that, there are a few books I feel should be required re...
Good news indeed that your chemo is nearly finished. Be kind to yourself; recovering your strength may come slower than you would like. Love and light to you on the path ahead.
Follow Your Scar
Take a listen: Scar - Carly Simon Most of my chemo has come to an end. I do have the trial drug, Herceptin, to receive until April. One full year of it. And I meet with the oncology radiologist next week to discuss radiation therapy. And then there's my upcoming hysterectomy which was pl...
Happy Birthday, looks like you had a blast. Hope this year is as productive and interesting as the last one.
July to August...good personally
At the end of July, Bruce and Bob got married. Oh, well, you'll think, another gay wedding. Yes, but they live in our retirement community and that was a first here. A couple for a number of years, Bob and Bruce moved to Portland from Baltimore to be near Bob's daughter and family. Since we...
Some days even blog posts can be hard to come by. Since my family complains when I don't post I guess they are my motivation.
Blogging: too easy to malinger?
Couple of weeks ago, a friend and I talked about what it would take to get our juices flowing on writing. Write Around Portland, a workshop, seemed a fine toe dip into the water. Each of us had been to one of these "prompt" sessions in the past. Mine was five years ago when we first moved to...
They look interesting! I've always loved ceramics but never got up the nerve to try any for myself.
Ceramics
After three years of working very part time on ceramics, I'm finally getting somewhere.
That's a good looking crew!
The Cast and Crew
Many bloggers refer to their family members as "DH" "SIL" "BIL", etc. I have always refered to my folks by their name or their relationship to me. Recently (while at one of Satchel's Little League games and at a family dinner - both places where you will find our family congregating en force) ...
The ideas above sound good. Just check the packet to be sure it says to direct sow and you are golden. More sun is better, but I have grown all of these in partial sun with OK results.
Selfie of my crew, by Andy Aw, yeah, we're here....
Selfie of my crew, by Andy Aw, yeah, we're here. Have I ever been this tired? Shoot no. Even after Grandma Paulson's wonderful visit this past week, where I did nothing but indulge myself by going out to eat, seeing a movie, talking on the phone, sitting in my studio, surfing Pinterest, staying...
