Very true JC. Isn't His hand guiding Everything?
New Nest, Same Tree
Finally enough leaves have come off the nest tree for me to spot the new nest. The new nest is in the same tree just a bit lower and in a different set of branches. Below are a couple of pictures from today showing the old nest and the new nest and one showing a side view of the new nest. I also...
Good morning all.
I guess you can say that I'm a nesting eagle watcher. Once the eagles have fledged, I don't usually return to watch until they begin to prep the nest for the next family. This year was different. I've hung around most of the summer watching L&J survey their partially destroyed home. I wondered what was going through their minds as they looked at how the nest had fallen away taking their family with it. Would they try to rebuild it? It looked precarious to me. It must have looked the same to them also. So now the new nest is taking shape. It's in the same tree. I'm sure there are lots of other trees around where they could build higher. But no. In the same tree! That amazes me. How often does this happen? When we humans chose to build a new home, don't we look to build a nicer home? Surely in a different neighborhood! Maybe a different state!
L&J could have flown across the river to a different state. They could have picked a taller tree. Surely a quieter neighborhood what with the trains and the Mexican music! ( I know that was fixed). But they have chosen to stay right here. You know, I think I know the reason. They Know we're watching them! They know we Love them. They know we enjoy watching them raise their families! That's why they stayed in the same tree! Pretty smart aren't they?

Good morning everyone! Recently, I have dropped by just once a day. Nest always seems desolate each time. It was nice to see both kids at the nest this morning. By using my comparison photo, the nest seems to be slipping away with each passing storm. I too wonder if there's something in the works to save the nest and keep our family in this location.
Everyone. Have a great weekend and stay cool. It's really hot back here in Maryland.
Expanding Their Territory
Both Star and Sky appear to have been very active yesterday. Below are the tracking screens for each of them from 6am yesterday until 6am today. Both of them had several data points indicating speeds between 25 and 30 mph. There was one data point for Sky with a speed noted of 40 mph. It is very...
I can sympathize with them. I got caught out in a driving rain storm while playing golf yesterday! Haven't dried out yet!
Answering Another Question
Here is another answer from Dr. Tricia Miller from West Virginia University to a question posted here. How many nests have you been able to do multiple eaglets at the same time vs. only one eaglet? Most bald eagle nests that we have visited have twins or triplets; rarely are there singlets. Out ...
I think she is uses the wall sticks to practice gripping with talons and balance.
What Do They Measure?
Here are a couple more answers from Dr. Tricia Miller about the research work done earlier this week with the eagles. I have included a few photos as well. Can you describe some of the measurements you took and what they tell you? Talons? Beak/nares? - We take 8 measurements on chicks. These are...
A question I have did not get answered. Can we expect future fledglings to be fitted with transmitters? I would think that continual nest invasions whether by predators or humans would have L&J looking for a new location!
A Little More Info
I really appreciate the robust discussion here yesterday. I want you to know that my observation of the work yesterday gave me a better appreciation for the dedication and passion the people who do this kind of important work must have. Dr. Miller and her team were gentle and respectful of the e...
This is clearly a family in distress right now. I went back and watched from the time the parent returned and found her children with transmitters on their backs. If it was upsetting and wrong for her, that's exactly how I feel about it too. I've viewed the Alcoa nest for three years now and feel a violation of trust. No advanced notification and then turning off the cameras. Why? Seems like Big Brother( government)deciding what's best for us. We, along with many schools and organizations have enjoyed the cycle of rebirth, failures, and successes in a perfectly natural setting. This adulteration of this process was not necessary! I'm quite sure there are other nests in the area that could have been selected leaving this site pristine and natural.
Research Project
This morning we participated in a research project being conducted by West Virginia University and supported by USF&W service. I will post some pictures later today. The process included bringing both Star and Sky down to ground level for some testing, banding and the placement of transmitters. ...
As a followup I just read that the eagle will drop the turtles on rocks to crack the shell.
Amazing Growth!
Isn't it amazing how quickly these two have gone from being just a few ounces and unable to hold their heads up - to getting close to full size? Just a few more weeks and they will be ready to take their first flights out of the nest tree. All of this growth in just a little over five weeks.
Turtle must be a delicacy as it seems to be a struggle to get at the edibles.

I was just going back through some posts during the "naming" period. I think we should somehow save the names for future years. Here's why. Some of the pairings just didn't sound good together but when paired up with names of other pairings, they sound good together and make more sense. Has anyone else noticed that?
Say Hello to Star & Sky
The voting is over and the two Alcoa EagleCam eaglets for 2016 will now be known by the names Star and Sky. With nearly 5,000 votes almost 30% went to this pair of names. In keeping with our past practice Star will be the first hatch and Sky will be the second hatched.
What is irritating everyone at the nest? I can't see any bugs flying around. Do they have mites on them as other birds do?

Now what's that supposed to mean JH? **wink**
Voting Continues
Voting continues for the names of the Eaglets at the Alcoa EagleCam nest. Here is an update on the standings this morning. There have been nearly 3,000 votes so far this week. We will continue taking votes through Monday. Star & Sky 28% Hunter & Fisher 22% Patriot & Joy 19% Scout & Tal...
Keep playing with that stick and someone's gonna get hurt!!!
Second Hatch This Morning
We are excited to welcome the second eaglet to the nest at Alcoa EagleCam this morning. The hatch started yesterday and was completed early this morning. Hopefully both eaglets with thrive over the next few weeks.
Nothing like starting with the eyes and then work your way to the tail!

How about: Custer and Running Bull
Hiawatha and Minnehaha
Lone ranger and Tonto
But I digress. Perhaps another Miller Lite to get me back on track. ;)

Almost Here
I have been out of town for a few days for an event planned before Liberty and Justice decided to be late with eggs this year. Storms this week knocked us off a couple of times. It also appears our audio may be damaged at the tree. Since we are close to a hatch we will not go down there right now...
Getting a bit "seasick" viewing the TT camera in this wind.

New Livestream Platform
This afternoon we upgraded to the Livestream Studio 3 platform. This should make our video stream more accessible on more mobile devices. If you have issues feel free to post comments here and I will try to get issues fixed or reply to answer questions.
Mavis, that's right. I get duel video only on my phone. I read a little about Livestream Studio 3. It is HD and can be SUHD(4K). I use Chrome (recommended) on my iPad. Very sharp video. It also works well with Safari. Downloading one of these may solve some issues of those with older systems. Worth a try?

Interesting side note. On my Samsung Android I can play Both videos at once! Really kinda neat when you mirror it on a Samsung Smart TV. I'm really sorry to hear that some are having such a difficult issue viewing the nest with the Livstream format.
