Problem solving for the home handyman
There were going to be photos with this post but I can't get them to load ... Wednesday the dishwasher didn't drain completely. Cleaned the sieve trap and screen (which were not really grotty at all). Did a clean on hot cycle yesterday - still some water remaining. Fiddled around... Continue reading

shame the King parrot moved - they are beautiful birds.
Farewell to Batemans Bay
Here is the dawn photo for Spetz. Although taken at 6:20am, the sun was up and behind clouds. There is some pink in the clouds above the island. but drowned out by the other colours. There was one patch of red though, from a final visitor.

nice set capturing the decline and fall.
A wonder it hasn't been pulled down to make way for something more decadent ...
Decadence
I think I like decline and fall - probably my Roman heritage. This is the old coal loader on Sydney harbour. Coal was brought into here from Newcastle and loaded onto trolleys as fuel for steamships in Sydney - up until the 80s apparently. Around the time we discovered that playing wargames wa...
Yes, mostly it was in the microwave. I just needed to reheat the pan to fry my egg when I finished photographing :-)
That set of cupboards is the most illuminated part of the house as it is opposite the 2 big fluoros in the kitchen, hence I suppose the range of insects that end up settling on it.
more accidental macro while preparing dinner
I was getting my dinner ready when I noticed a rather large moth on the cupboard above the stove ... Beautiful red colour and so fluffly looking up close. Here are a few shots. A few contortions undertaken on a little 2 step ladder and against cupboard doors etc. Would have been nice to be able ...

thank you.
the fly was an unexpected target - I was just playing around with the little flowers (nearly all gone now) when this little fly alighted on that sprig of blossoms. then I just had to (!) attempt captures :-)
That style of Manfrotto tripod might suit you.
more accidental macro
quick playing around this afternoon with pretty little flowers outside back door. First with 18-55 AF-P lens, then with macro trying a different tripod setup - didn't think the horizontal extension would be useful but turns out it is.

well they kept the Union Jack there, so that's good!
Clever, but will irritate my mates no end
I noticed an odd flag flying on the walk home from the office earlier this week. It took me several seconds to deconstruct it. I think it is a clever bit of fun, and, for me, symbolises pride in the past and the future. I think my mates will bitterly disagree and call for a homeland security v...
that is quite interesting.
something different about the trees?
the 'game' for the Kookaburra hunters?
An uncommon sight in Croydon
I am intrigued than when we moved house 17 years ago, we moved about 6 kilometres but completely changed our avian niche: Australian miners for Indian Mhynahs and wattle birds King parrots for rosellas Pluvers for mudkarks But no replacement for Kookaburras. I saw this pair on a long walk - ...
I think you are making fun of me ...
Bugs that impact my ability to code
This fellow dropped in on my work day last week. I took him outside as there was no food for him. You can see that I do not use the Nazgul keyboard often.
If you look at the first shot in maximum zoom (click on the image, then do the +) you can actually see his/her 'anchor line' of silk running from the back of the abdomen. They have a single thread anchored somewhere which I gather saves them if they should happen to misjump.
First Jumper (photos) of the season
I had just got back from a ride and sitting on the front steps espied a little jumping spider on the wall of the house ... Quickly inside to collect camera, minitripod and flash. These are all cropped a fair bit. Here is the setup - the little tripod allows me to brace against the wall an...
nice.
The Return of PRESTAGS?
I opened the latest Strategy and Tactics last week and the map reminded me of something! Of course prettier, but structurally just like PRESTAGS. The leader counters are reminiscent, though again prettier. The archer and artillery had similar factors, but the absence of skirmishers (on of my...
can't quite make it out but is it a hybrid Lebanon / Australia flag?
Do you remember Anonietta Bua had a lapel pin flag with the Union Jack swapped out for an Italian flag in the corner over the Southern Cross?

once on a flower, flies and hoverflies seem to stay pretty still. Bees seem to keep moving the whole time.
Attempting to match MiLord
Getting in the car today i noticed a bee working the bottlebrush. I set the phone to close up and took 20 shots. I could not get the focus right and often blurred the flower. MiLord is the master.
Bees are hard to get in flight. Good try imho.
I haven't tried for ages. They don't hover so you have this challenge of a small moving target lost in the background - challenges for focus acquisition (not acquired = out of focus), shutter speed (not fast enough on moving target and out of focus). Hoverflies hovering above flowers (sort of staticly in the air) allows a camera angle where it is the fly and the sky, so the camera is less likely to get fooled into focusing on the background.
