TOM JENSEN/FOX SPORTS NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt, taken by official NASCAR photographer Darryl Moran (Photo credit: Wikipedia) February 18, 2001. Every NASCAR fan remembers where they were when they first got the news: Dale Earnhardt had died in the final turn of the final lap at Daytona. Even today, 13 years after he died, those words are painful to process. Whether you loved Earnhardt or loathed him -- and there were plenty of fans in both camps -- he was a larger than life character: Bold, cocky, talented, fiercely loyal to those close to him and indestructible. Or so we... Continue reading

By Elana Gordon, WHYY FEB 14, 2014 What can’t librarians do? Many are now becoming health insurance guides. The buzz at the American Library Association's winter meeting recently wasn't just about the annual awards (a.k.a. the book award "super bowl"); the Affordable Care Act was also on the agenda. Libraries across the country have been trying to meet a growing demand for health insurance information. At the Free Library of Philadelphia’s central branch, library coordinator Nani Manion has started running twice-weekly enrollment clinics in the technology lab. Manion is one of 33 librarians in the Philly system who have undergone... Continue reading

THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT a blog by SOLOMON JONES Drug abuse doesn't begin with a needle in one's arm, like it reportedly ended for Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman. It begins with a cloud of marijuana smoke and a string of bad decisions. This is not to say that every Justin Bieber will end up like Hoffman. But marijuana, like any drug, is a slippery slope. One that we, as a society, must tread carefully. A few weeks ago, when Philadelphia City Councilman Jim Kenney introduced a bill that would decriminalize low-amount marijuana possession, allowing police officers to issue a summons... By Michael Snyder When a real terrorist attack happens, sometimes we don’t hear about it until months afterward (if we ever hear about it at all). For example, did you know that a team of snipers shot up a power station in California? Of course most Americans have absolutely no idea that this ever happened, because they get their news from the mainstream media. The chairman …read more... Continue reading

Note: The following thoughts came to me from a friend’s email. I do not know if Mr. Junius P. Long actually exists. Regardless of his status, these words and thoughts sum up quite nicely how the ruling political class has screwed up the country’s finances, priorities, liberties, and common sense. By Junius P. Long If you can get arrested for hunting or fishing without a license, but not for being in the country illegally ...you might live in a country founded by geniuses but run by idiots. If you have to get your parents’ permission to go on a field... Continue reading
