Bishop Tuell talks about how the "idea of homosexuality produces an almost instinctive negative reaction, coming from who-knows-what subliminal sources." Martha Nussbaum, professor of law and ethics, has examined this as "disgust" and shows how it has been used as the basis of our laws against homosexuality, but this "fundamental refusal of another person's full humanity" is not a sound basis for law. She talks about constitutional law, but I think this applies to church law even more than secular law. I highly recommend reading Nussbaum's book, From Disgust to Humanity.
