Yesterday while driving back from the beaches, I heard "Stir it up" by Bob Marley on Indie88, a radio station here in Toronto. Bob Marley's music represents summer vibes more than any other artist I can think of. That song is killer, but this Kungs remix of "Jammin" is pretty damn beachy as well. Continue reading

Petra Bullock is a teenage singer songwriter from New Zealand. She has collaborated with some members of Lorde's old band, which is how I found her stuff. I love the below recording of her song, "How Shall I know." The song has a lot of warmth to it, and I love the harmonies. The perfect track for a lazy summer night. Continue reading

Aussie sibling talent Angus and Julia Stone released their new self titled album at the beginning of August. I think the entire album is really solid, in particular the upbeat track "Little Whiskey". I think A&J have become known for their whispering vocals, and precious commercial friendly song composition. I... Continue reading

Back in high school I was a hardcore militant Weezer fan. Not sure there's any other kind, actually. I lurked on the message boards, read fan fiction where Rivers Cuomo acted uncharacteristically romantic and downloaded every b-side and bootleg recording I could get my hands on. There's something about the music you connect with as an adolescent. I don't think you ever really get over those bands. I used to have this weird shopping bag full of cds that were either Weezer mixes I made, live recordings, or random interviews. The bag got smaller after each move, and now I only have one ratty old cd left. Continue reading

Sad Jack covers Lorde's "Royals" [The Indie-Verse]. Foo Fighters' have an HBO show in the work documenting their 8th studio album [Spin]. Kahron Spearman wrote a fantastic piece on the importance of Hip Hop [HNHH]. Check out these tracks from Lorde's highschool band And They Were Masked. Here's a run... Continue reading

I'm a sucker for a good cover track. My friend Sandy sent be this cover of Gnarls Barkley's, "Crazy" by Daniela Andrade. I think her vocals are stunning. I love the simplicity of her version. Giant side note: Did you know the music for the original "Crazy" was inspired by a song from the score to 1968 spaghetti Western Viva! Django. Viva! Django was a sequel to Django, and starred Italian actor Frances Nero. Nero played a small part in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained. ANYWAY - Here is Daniela Andrade's cover along with a few others I can't stop listening to. Continue reading

Last month I was lucky enough to be a part of the small crowd who gathered at Drake Underground to see Ohio darlings Saintseneca. I think it was the first time the five piece performed in Toronto. Check out tracks "Happy Alone" and "Uppercutter" from their new album Dark Arc. Continue reading

The UK band Jungle is so mysterious, I'm not even sure the above picture is actually them. Despite the secrecy, some may know them for their incredible music videos for tracks "The Heat" and "Platoon." I'm loving their entire self-titled album, and I think it may land on my list for best albums of the year. Check out "The Heat" below. Continue reading

Brooklyn based seven-piece Rubblebucket released a new single called "Carosel Ride". They have a new record coming out on August 25th called Survival Sounds, "Carosel Ride" is the second track they've released from the album. As if "The Humpty Dance" wasn't enough of a summer jam. The song with the most sampled drum beat of the 90s gets The Hood Internet treatment and the result is a very slick summer strut song. Continue reading

I've added Some Girls to my summer reading list. I had no idea about the Weezer connection. I was a pretty militant =w= fan in high school, and I still get excited about them. Thanks for sharing!
