Dear Fern, It has been awhile since I have done any more experimenting with natural dyes, but I have been collecting stray bits of lichen that I often see on the ground at school in the hopes of doing something spectacular with them. Continue reading

Dear Beetle, It should come as no surprise that I have some similar little angel treasures from my childhood. These are a part of a small collection of German ornaments that I saved from my childhood Christmas tree. My mom bought these when we lived in Frankfurt. Our tree was... Continue reading

Dear Fern, I wanted to show you these precious little angels—my most beloved and prized Christmas ornaments that I have had since I was a child. Their little metallic loops broke off long ago so they can no longer adorn our tree but I love and treasure them nonetheless. They... Continue reading

I am almost finished with these Vancouver Fog fingerless gloves—just have to knit up that last thumb! Luckily I've knit so many gnome hats for peg dolls that the thumbs aren't too tricky. I've used my Malabrigo Rios in Primavera that I bought on that sweaty day last July when... Continue reading

Dear Beetle, I'm so glad that you, your family, and your craft supplies made it all the way to Spokane, safe and sound. Durham is feeling that much emptier though, and I'm burying my loneliness in doll making and yarn hoarding. I'm working on some variations of the Winterberry Doll... Continue reading

We made it to Spokane. Taking the scenic route, we drove 3,000 miles. But according to the Google maps, we are only 2,554 miles apart. I miss you! My crafts and supplies are everywhere. There's a puddle of blank peg dolls on the floor of the room I've designated as my studio space. It's in the basement but... Continue reading

Thank you, Melissa! Hmm…I am pretty sure that the turquoise yarn came from a skein of Noro Silk Garden, but I'm not sure of the exact colorway! I'm terrible at saving that sort of information. But if you look at your local yarn shop I'll bet you can find it. I think the jacket on the peg doll on the left also came from the same skein. Good luck and happy yarn hunting! —Beetle

Dear Fern, FINALLY! I thought this winter would never end. And, if next week's forecast is to be believed, perhaps it hasn't. But I'm choosing to ignore that. It seems the warmer days are starting to outnumber the colder days and little green sprouts are starting to pop up in... Continue reading

We are huge fans of that book at our house, too! I think your bluebirds are spectacular! My children have made the peas in a pod, which are so, so fun to play with. We make so many peg dolls around here that my daughter has dubbed Saturday "Peg Doll Day!'

Dear Beetle, Ever since those early days of planning our Beetle and Fern Etsy shop, I've wanted to make some cuddly, velour Waldorf dolls. I've made several in the past, but none of them were quite right. They were too big or too firm, oddly shaped or oddly proportioned. I... Continue reading

Dear Beetle, Your gnomes are gorgeous! I'm quite partial to their tall, woolie handknit hats. Those two look as if they are just about to bundle off on some woodland adventure. The Mister even has a little pouch for their snacks (because gnomes never leave home without a snack)! Of... Continue reading
