There's one interesting complication. For many people not very well versed in dance history simple references to historical dance are enough to make any dance more romantic and interesting. If it resemble something dances in a "historical" movie and have a "historical" label pasted on it, that adds to the excitement. When one knows more about the actual historical practice such references often clash with one's expectation. This can make the same dance much less interesting and exciting for them.

I suddenly realize that the first known cutting-in is in "La Caccia d'Amore". It's certainly not a direct connection but it's amusing how same ideas pop out here and there throughout dance history. For the first mixer returning to the partner seems an important thing for the author, while the second one doesn't care. This might tell something about changing ballroom customs, or maybe not.

I was reading Gilbert's book recently and this timing notation in cross-step polka puzzled me as well.
