I have to say that I'm not a fan of horse-drawn carriages. There are some in Lunenburg, and I feel so sorry for the horses, especially on the hot days. I can't imagine how a horse feels pulling a carriage in 45 degree weather :-( Although I suppose in Marrakesh, everything that everybody does is always done in hot weather!
Clip Clop
Taking a horse and carriage is a lovely way to see Marrakech and a good alternative to a petit taxi if there is more than 3 in your party . The price must be haggled over just like a taxi and the traffic will be the same but it feels like a romantic step back in time. The carriages lin...
It looks particularly imposing in your first picture! It's hard to imagine people building something like this without all the modern tools and machinery.
Perfect Paris - part 3
The beautiful travertine Basilica of Sacre Coeur sits atop the hill of Montmartre. The stone exudes a calcite so it stays white despite age, weather and pollution. It was finally completed in 1914, taking 39 years to construct. A competition was launched to find an architect who could des...
Great pictures Kate :-) The tiles work around the fountain is really impressive. Love the colours :-)
Last Week's Treat - part 2
Seeing Hassan 11 Mosque is an unmissable experience when in Casablanca. I have seen it several times now and never tire of its magnificence. Jutting out into crashing waves and soaring metres high over all other city buildings makes it awesome, in the true Oxford dictionary sense of the wor...
That is one very well-travelled tin of frosting! Hope you're enjoying Prague :-)
A Well Travelled Gift
I am a frosting lover and always have disasters when I try to make it. My daughter bought me this tinned Mango frosting to try when she was in the States in February presumably intending to post it to Morocco. I have had the worst experiences with Moroccan postal services and knew it would ...
Mmmmmm! I'd eat that! :-D
Simply the Best
You can see we are in very good company - in fact this cafe was dotted with photos of famous people who have eaten there. We were at the Chocolatier San Gines in Madrid eating their world famous churros dipped in thick cups of their world famous hot chocolate. It has been in Madrid since...
Wow, that's cool! I love cobalt blue :-) I wish we had markets here in North America like the ones they have in Europe. Did you go to the one in Budapesy when you were there?
Having the Blues
The Mercado de San Miguel is an historical covered market located in the heart of Madrid’s old quarter. It dates back to well before 1835. This enormous central light fitting consists of dozens of blue bottles strung up seemingly precariously, appearing like a gigantic airborne pom pom. The m...
Holy crap! All that for $72.00 a night!? You got the deal of the century! Crappy plain old hotel rooms here for for over $100/night!
My Mansion in Madrid
I thought I booked a room. I paid for a room but I got a mansion instead. AirBnB has certainly come through with the goods. The room I thought I was getting seems to be the Spanish steroids version. Not only is it central and beautiful, it has a art deco lift up to the 3 rd floor and is so cra...
Oh, I could just gobble up all those yummy berries right now!
Tis the Season to be Berry .......
I am buying strawberries by the kilo, fully intending to freeze some for the berry free months to come but I seem to be eating them by the kilo instead. Along many streets I come across sellers with big carts mounded with berries. They are weighed out on very ancient scales and are about 15 dh...
Ah, so it's the actual sap straight from the tree without any processing. http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2014/03/24/maple-water-_n_5021470.html
Has Anyone Tried This ??
Pure maple water !! I had not seen it or even heard of it till recently when I was strolling the gourmet food aisles in Harvey Nichols. I love maple syrup so would love to hear of anyone who has tasted this. It is made from the sap from maple trees, contains 46 various vitamins and nutrients, ...
We have lots of maple products here, but I've never heard of or seen maple water. I wonder if it comes from the syrup making process. I'll have to Google it :-)

I use coconut sugar :-) But it's not packaged this nicely! I buy it from the bulk food store. It's a healthier option than white or brown sugar, and doesn't have the aftertaste of fake sugars, which I can't stand. It's not quite as sweet as white or brown sugar, and I don't use it to replace white or brown sugar 100% of the time. But I do use it quite a bit.
Has Anyone Tried This - part 3 ??
Coconut Blossom Sugar !! I had never heard of it and I thought I knew of and had tasted every form of sugar on the planet !! Seems not !! The gorgeous jar caught my eye so I had to google this and found it is a dried form of sap , not a very appetising description. It does come from the coconu...
I'm fascinated by cool looking doors too. When we were in Luxembourg and Belgium, hubby gave me a hard time about taking pictures of so many doors. So it turns out I'm not the only one intrigued by doors :-)
Dawdling past Doors
This blog post is for my friend J who loves doorways. I, too, love thinking about what lies behind front doors. Entrances are so different in every country. Every house in Australia that I have lived in has had the classic fly wire screen or a heavy duty security door, neither which you wil...
I love these balls - they really satisfy the craving for something sweet and/or chocolately in a healthy way :-)
Moroccan Date Truffle Balls
Gluten free, easy, no bake, no added sugar and no added fat - what could be better ?? I put dates and almonds and oats into food processor and blitz together then add other ingredients - everything should resemble a mulch and come together quite quickly. There are no rules here so increase ...
Lovely rugs :-) I assume they come in other colours too, or is red most common?
Magic Carpet Ride
Buying a beautiful rug in Morocco can be a mine field . The sellers are persuasive and the choices endless. My son recently purchased two whilst here on a quick trip. The first purchases provided him with a learning curve enabling him to drive a hard bargain when buying rug number two. So thro...
I'm with you, I'd definitely go with the chicken version, not tripe! Do you know why this dish is labour-intensive to make?
Rfissa
About a week ago I was privileged to share a mid afternoon meal with the other members of staff here at the riad. Zakia, our wonderful cook , made a very traditional and quite labour intensive dish called Rfissa. Chicken, lentils, spices and day old bread are the main ingredients but I have a...
I never drink tonic water, but when I had a bad leg cramp a few weeks ago, some people told me to drink tonic water. Apparently the quinine helps relieve cramps. No idea if it did the trick, but the cramp went away eventually - took a few hours though!
Gin & Fever Tree Tonic Water
Fever Tree tonic was served to me one night in London. I was not familiar with this brand but that maybe because it is not {sadly} readily available in Australia. Schweppes seems to be the biggest name in tonic water there. But this name fascinated me so I did a bit of googling and I learnt s...
I wonder if you could make them in a pan instead of in the oven - might be easier to keep an eye on them and make sure they don't burn.
I love this recipe for sweet & spicy nuts - you can adjust the spices according to how hot you want them - I use chipotle powder & paprika :-) And I like pecans, cashews, and almonds with pumpkin seeds mixed in :-)

Honey Roasted Caramel Peanuts
Totally addictive is my first and foremost comment. This seller and his delicious peanuts were in the centre of London and provided a sweet snack on a grey bleak day and I have been thinking about them ever since. Now back in Marrakech I thought I would see if I could re create a similar sna...
Yay for takeaway and free delivery! Your post reminds me that I need to make another batch of hummus :-)
A Lebanese Lunch
Today I went with a lovely friend S to have lunch at La Cuisine de Mona. It is a tiny bit hidden away and I probably would not have found it on my own. It has a little courtyard and we sat in the weak winter sunshine and talked non stop, sharing experiences, as she has a job similar to mine....
We went on a haunted tour one night when we were in Charleston, South Carolina. The stories are intriguing, but as for whether or not there are really ghosts wandering about... well, we didn't see any :-)
The "Haunted" Grenadier
This pub is on the tourist trail for those lovers of spooks and ghouls. That is not me as I prefer the more tangible when I am being a tourist. It has stood here in Belgrave Square in London in one form or another since 1720. The ghost of a young soldier who cheated at a game of cards and was...
You do find the yummiest looking shops! Not a fan of coffee, but I could definitely eat some tarts :-)
Wild & Wood Cafe, London
I mentioned yesterday in my post that when I am on the tourist trail I prefer the more tangible. This to me means coffee and food. I pressed my nose up against the window of this wonderful cafe in London recently when I spotted something very close to my heart. Portuguese tarts no less. Whil...
Oh, I miss seeing flowers outside! All we've seen outside here for the last four months is snow. UGH! I'm so tired of winter, bring on the spring blooms please!
Bloomin' London
I have always loved seeing the brightly filled window boxes with cascading fuchsias or geraniums that adorn nearly every home, chalet and building throughout Europe. They have never been a feature I have noted in the UK but on this visit to London I happily saw floral bursts of colour eve...
Mmmmm! Can't go wrong with strawberries, cream, and chocolate!
Three Things.
Strawberries, cream and chocolate ! A gluten free cake was needed at the riad so here it is. It is hard to be wheat free in Morocco as bread and couscous are such mainstays in the local diet, but you can still eat cake !
Are they mainly stray cats, or do people let their cats wander around outside? So cute that someone left this little guy a biscuit :-)
A Little Sweet Cat
I see many cats every single day, all shapes, colours and sizes and all look in reasonable good heath. The ones I see in the souks are almost plump and loiter around the fish and poultry stalls and are clearly rewarded for doing so. They are often nibbling on a tasty morsel like a chicken foot...
I don't think I've ever heard of wattle, and I've definitely never seen it. Do you know why it was chosen as Australia's floral emblem? I would expect it to be something more colourful and showy :-)
Wattle - on Sale !
This is Australia's National floral emblem and not for one second did I ever expect to see bunches of it for sale at the flower market in Marrakech. It grows in Morocco, up around Tangier. It is called mimosa, not wattle , in this part of the world. The lovely flower man gave me a bunch when h...
Reading through your recent blog posts is making me hungry! I wish I'd find something like this on my pillow at home every night! ;-)
Very Sweet Dreams
This pretty and angelic little platter of confectionary was found on both pillows at a very glamorous rural resort in NZ this week. A close friend was staying at Cape Kidnappers {wonderful name } and she was overjoyed as she did not have to share with her partner. It just goes to show that so...
