I thought that Professor Greer did a good job of trying to be objective and not sensationalist in describing climate change. I also really appreciated her in depth discussion of the many factors which affect climate, including the acknowledgment that "climate doesn't always behave," and that sometimes drastic changes occur naturally, as in the case of the Younger Dryas Period. I would be interested to hear more about the possible effects of human CO2 production, since it is unprecedented in such a short span of time.

In Chapter 14 the authors discuss how the Endangered Species Act doesn't protect animals that aren't already endangered. Have there been serious moves to change that, to a system wherein animals are protected before they ever become endangered? Further, I'm having a hard time seeing the point of the act, if Congress can override its recommendations, as was done in the case of the Snail Darter with the help of the Endangered Species Committee.

I found it interesting that 6 officers were in charge of dealing with a population of 28,000. Although there is only a limited amount of coast, it seemed that steep penalties were the only way to induce enough fear into the population in order to convince them to comply. With that in mind, it seems that the most important way to reduce fishing was a carrot and stick approach, but that the carrot was the most effective. Rather than forcing fishers to limit the size of their nets and imposing other restrictions only, when this approach was supported by different productive tasks (like beekeeping) sponsored by the government, the effect was to further reduce fishing in the area, thereby allowing the population of fish to recover and the local inhabitants to benefit from other income.
