One more thing that capstone taught me this week: Don't underestimate any task. The last thing you should expect in a capstone project is: to finish before the deadline. Initially, I thought that once you are done with the field work and data collection, things tend to ease out a bit. But no, the real game begins later! This week, we specifically worked on the presentation after getting great constructive feedback from Drew and our class. I realized that this feedback helped us to modify our presentation that truly enhanced its content and appeal. We managed to complete our work... Continue reading

Time flies and our capstone project just proved it! Our team started this project much before the start of semester and although at some point of time, I did feel that this is a 'never-ending' process, but now, as we approach towards the closing, it feels like we just started few days back. This week we worked on the final deliverable. Being an MS-Marketing student, presentations are a part and parcel of our lives. However, this one is special. Because, the final presentation is more than just a grade. It is the final step towards depicting the 4 months of... Continue reading

As we are working towards the final report and presentation, I can actually see how every client meeting, customer interviews, store visits tie up to the final goal of the project. As I must have mentioned in my previous posts, the fact that we took Drew's advice seriously and started working on our report from week 1, it really helped us to stay up-to-date and avoid last minute report-writing. Delays prove to be a major hurdle in the capstone project. Even if you are on schedule, there can always be some external situations that can mess up with it. However,... Continue reading

With all the changes in plans, we now know the path that we need to follow. We collected around 40+ customer surveys which by no means was an easy task. Long hours at the stores on weekends was all worth it as we wanted to collect good responses and not compromise on the market research phase, as that could make or break our project. We are now trying to track the customer retention rate at the stores to understand whether Evans has an acquisition problem/ retention problem. This would help us to design our recommendations for Evans. One thing that... Continue reading

This week has been more about time management. The only thing that we will never have-is TIME. Because every time we feel that we are on track, something wouldn’t work out and we would be thrown off-track. But luckily, we manage to figure it out on time and get back on the game. Collecting responses from retail customers is what are focus was this week. It wasn’t as easy as we assumed it to be! Evans landscaping has 3 commercial stores out of which 2 stores have a good flow of retail customers. The task was difficult, as the customers... Continue reading

The capstone is more like a puzzle! Throughout the project, we struggle with the different pieces and strive towards our final goal-getting it right! We are currently in the mid-phase, where we get the pieces together, feel things are fine and suddenly an idea/ thought pops up and no, we have to reshuffle and redefine our plan. Nevertheless, it is a fun process. What truly matters is- how confident are you of your analysis. We had to spend a lot of time thinking about Evans' current big picture, because their current marketing efforts have no clear direction- so basically they... Continue reading

This week, we managed to move things faster. We finally decided that we would be focusing on just one out of the three sets of customers to be within the scope of the project. This led to redefining our work till date to some extent. Our initial interviews were mainly with wholesale customers and now, with the shift towards retail customers,we had to conduct more qualitative interviews, now with the retail customers. Although, the basic level of insights were almost similar as to why these customers pick Evans Landscaping, these interviews helped us to extract some key insights. Speaking to customers... This week, was more of a puzzle for us. We had to look at Evans Landscaping from different perspectives to understand their current strategy. Since, the company never had a marketing team or person and they rarely allocate resources to marketing, the lines between acquisition and retention was somewhat blurred. We have realized, that to answer business problems and to help the company achieve the business objective, we need to ensure that we understand the company thoroughly. Our interviews with the managers helped us gain the managerial perspective. Our customer interviews tomorrow, will help us know more about the company through... Continue reading

Our journey so far has been exciting. Our interviews with managers has made this project more interesting and engaging. We now understand the company and our project more deeply and with each day, it is growing to be more challenging and interesting, at the same time. Our current task, right now, is to conduct competitive analysis for Evans landscaping and to understand their core competency by working on their current big picture. We visited Evans retail stores and spoke to the retail and store managers. But the most exciting part at this point, was visiting Evan’s competitor store. We visited... Continue reading
