This was great advice for new teachers. I agree with every point that was made. I especially want to remember to pay attention to my students, so I can learn how they learn best. I want to be the kind of teacher that notices the small things about students, so I can better help my students to succeed in whatever subject they are struggling with. I also agree that judging students and assuming that they can't learn does not benefit anyone. As teachers it is our responsibility to have confidence in our students abilities. Often struggling students just need someone to believe in them and to push them to reach their full potential. Finally I hope I can remember that all students come into the classroom with their own struggles, and that I shouldn't judge any student based on their actions. I hope I can be a positive influence on the students that I teach. Thank you Jerry for giving me a list of ways to do that.
As a new student teacher these posts have been so helpful. I love the idea of keeping a journal so I can look back on the progress I have made in my teaching. Like so many other student teachers I often feel like it is going to be overwhelming and it is, yet I realize that all new teachers feel that way and that it will get better as I go through the experience. I love teaching students and am so excited to get to be a part of helping them learn and progress. I have a wonderful mentor teacher who I know will help me all along the way and a wonderful principle to work with who has made me feel so welcome in the school. I am excited to get started and alleviate some of the fears that I have. I think that will only happen as I continue to get comfortable with all aspects of teaching.
Reading these posts has me a little concerned about the work load of a special education teacher. I am just starting student teaching with the hope of teaching resource when I graduate, but I also have kids at home that I need to take care of. I do not have time to spend 12 hours a day in the classroom. I am hoping that my student teaching experience will be wonderful and that I will leave wanting to teach special education. So far I love my mentor teacher and the school that I am at. Everyone has been very welcoming and kind to me. I am going to go into this experience with a positive attitude, willing to do my best to help teach the students I am given. I know that all schools cannot be like the ones I have read about. For all the teachers who have posted that are burned out I hope you find a way to continue in your field, as you are greatly needed.
I also like many things about the common core standards. Like many other people who have commented, I like how they give teachers a guideline on what to teach but allow for all different types of teaching styles. As long as teachers cover the material in the standards, they can teach the content anyway they want. What I don't like is how they are being used in state testing. In many schools only language arts and math are being taught because those are the subjects being tested. Now science has been added and so that is being covered but social studies is left behind. I think that all the standards need to be taught and in a fun, creative way. This is hard to do when many teachers feel they have to teach to the test. I hope testing changes in the future so the core standards can be taught in the way they were designed to be taught.
I loved all of these posts! I will be student teaching in a few weeks and am a little nervous to be evaluated. Like many others said, no matter how perfect a lesson plan you prepare, things often do not go according to plan. I have done many lessons in the last year and only a few went exactly as I had planned. Although being evaluated does make me nervous, it was a relief to read all of these posts and realize that since I am student teaching, no one expects me to be perfect at it. I think all teachers have room for improvement no matter how long they have been teaching. I look forward to getting feedback on my lessons so that I can improve and become a better teacher. I know that I was meant to be a teacher and will do a great job. Being evaluated and getting positive feedback is one of the ways this will happen.
I found this post to be very informative. I am about to student teach this fall and I am also wondering if all of the classes I have taken will prepare me to be a teacher. It is comforting to know that I will learn a lot from student teaching and that I don't need to know everything to be a good teacher. Like Whitney, I am sure that I will encounter many things that I do not expect. I know that I want to be a teacher, however, and I am prepared to do anything and learn all I can to be a good one. I am excited to start this exciting journey and hope I can live up to all the other amazing teachers that help students on a daily basis.
As a student teacher this post helped me to remember that I don't have to know everything when I start to teach. I can learn and grow as I continue in my teaching career. I agree with Stephanie that professional development is very important. There is no way that teachers can learn everything they need to know while going to college. I also agree with John that students need to read books to excell in reading. I have always felt that once students find books they love to read then they will continue to read and will love doing so. This isn't going to happen by just having students read basals. They have to be given the opportunity to read a variety of different books so this can happen.
I love all of these classroom management ideas. I am student teaching in the fall and classroom management is one of the areas that I feel I need to work on. I like the idea of filling up the jar and feel like a reward that the students can work toward is a must. I also loved the ideas that Alyse had. I have learned that many students who act out are just seeking attention from the teacher, and I loved the ideas from Alyse that talked about ways to give the students that attention, without disrupting the class. I am wondering if reinforcing those activities would make the students do them more, but I think the idea could be adapted. Maybe putting the sticky notes on the desk when the student is doing what they should be, to let them know that you are paying attention to them when they are doing appropriate activities. I am excited to put the things I have learned about classroom management into practice.
I am starting student teaching in the fall, majoring in special education, and I am very committed to communicating with parents. As a parent of a special needs child myself, I have found that this is one area that many teachers do not put enough time into. For this coming school year my daughters teacher has already contacted me to find out about any special needs she might have and that was so comforting to me. I feel much less stressed in sending her to school now, because I know the teacher understands her needs. As a special education teacher I want to make sure that I communicate with the parents of my students so they know what the student is being taught and so they feel comfortable with all parts of their students learning, including IEP's. Everyones comments have been very helpful in this area.
I love this idea for positive reinforcement in the classroom. I am going to be an elementary teacher working with special needs students, and I think this reinforcement system could easily be adapted for younger students. I really want to use a lot of postive reinforcements in my classroom so it was good to read about effective this one was. I especially liked how punishments are a part of the same system so it works for positive and negative reinforcements.
