I think I've actually got a pretty good idea as to what this is about. Europe has historically had a lot of interaction with the coast of Africa, but much less contact with the interior lands, and the main reason for this was malaria. Europeans had almost no resistance to malaria at all, so when Europeans countries started sending ships on voyages of exploration, some were naturally sent up African rivers where nearly all or all of the crew would usually die from malaria, or perhaps one of the other many tropical diseases Europeans had never encountered. It's just an idea, but at this period of time there definitely would've been numerous expeditions up African rivers that never returned at all, hence the "ghost ships" on African rivers.
