The medal of St. Benedict contained a poem that was reduced to the first letter of each word of the poem (see below). The inscription on the sword looks to me like that kind of thing. Nunquam suade mihi vana (Never tempt me with vain things), Sunt mala quae libas (What you offer is evil), Ipse venena bibas (Drink the poison yourself).
