Thank you Councilman Burgess for denouncing this ridiculous plan underwritten by the ACLU and for supporting the vastly superior proposal by the Mayor. There is an enormous disconnect between this "right to camp" proposal and what is apparently desired by most city residents. Those residents' opinions should come before that of the ACLU. And it is absolutely true that unfortunately this 'right to camp' proposal is just a huge distraction from the real issues: drugs and affordable housing. The homelessness issue is never going to be solved without confronting the heroin epidemic. Allowing people to camp is simple complacency and enabling - it will absolutely make the problem worse, to the detriment of the city's neighborhoods AND the homeless.
