Here is a statistic reported in a journal paper showing the following data: EMD = 5.1 (-1.0-11.3) - numbers in () represent the 95% CI) for the estimated mean difference. I am having difficulty interpreting the CI since it is not displayed according to what I've thought as the conventional format [xx, xx]. Do you read the CI here as [-1.0, 11.3] or [1.0, -11.3)? This is important since I am trying to figure out the SD for the EMD - or am I completely on the wrong track here - trying to calculate effect size for the outcomes in this paper.
