This purple cauliflower was so eye-catching, I could not resist purchasing it, first to paint. I browsed the produce section for other veggies to include with the cauliflower. The bright stems of the rainbow chard made a nice base, the very ripe tomato for accent, garlic for a neutral contrast.... Continue reading

More mushrooms from the farmer's market. Fun to paint, delicious to eat! It took a couple weeks to complete this painting, pondering the background color. Mark at www.skagitgourmetmushrooms.com has been patiently waiting to see the finished painting of his Pioppini Mushrooms. Meanwhile I did this quick pen sketch of Mark's... Continue reading

At the farmer’s market last Saturday, I found these irresistible blue mushrooms, Pleurotus Columbinus. I told the grower, Mark, at Skagit Gourmet Mushrooms I was going to paint these beauties before eating. http://skagitgourmetmushrooms.com He was right, the blue diminished the next day after being refrigerated, but even so, I spent... Our apartment was only a five minute walk from this spectacle. After dinner, we often walked here to marvel, yet again, at the sight. There were always one or two spray paint artists, wearing respirators, surrounded by a couple dozen cans of aerosol cans, deftly wielding stencils, spraying away. In... Continue reading

This was fun to paint, once I got the proportions right. I sat across the street in a tiny park area with a few benches to do the drawing. The painting I did back at our apartment where I had more room to spread out mixing these colors, not to... Continue reading

The buskers are playing perfect music for painting. A tourist buys their CD, then asks if she can take my photo. https://www.clairecreates.com/.a/6a01b8d27f99f2970c022ad39ceb5b200d-pi Continue reading

Before the tour groups blocked my view, I enjoyed some quiet early morn art time. Everywhere I turn, I see beautiful ruins to paint! What a visual feast! https://www.clairecreates.com/.a/6a01b8d27f99f2970c022ad3bc8bbf200b-pi Continue reading

Sitting on the stairs leading up to San Pietro in Vincoli, St. Peter in Chains, I painted this tower with a small olive tree. It was a lovely Sunday afternoon, perfect for enjoying the sights. https://www.clairecreates.com/.a/6a01b8d27f99f2970c022ad3744382200c-pi Continue reading

This wrought iron gate is along the long stair climb up to San Pietro in Vincoli, St. Peter in Chains. Besides the chains, the church has the impressive Michelangelo statue of a massive seated Moses with the 10 commandments tucked under his arms. Continue reading

This is a suggestion of Berninni’s baroque fountain of the four rivers: Nile, Ganges, Danube, and Rio de la Plata. The rivers represent the four parts of the world: Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas respectively. Continue reading

The tower on the left was drawn with my new gray Playcolor pen which I just learned is very water soluble. Using that to my advantage, I blurred the outlines with lots of water. The dome glows with Daniel Smith iridescent gold and sunstone which, alas, do not photograph. Use... Continue reading

High on our to-see list was this multi media version of a Pope, Michelangelo, and the Sistine Chapel ceiling. It is a movie with on-stage dancers, images projected on the auditorium walls and ceiling. “I am a sculptor, not a painter!” Protested Michelangelo to the Pope. The massive muscular figures... We walked several miles on the old, 300 BC, Appian Way, still in use today. The original stones are polished smooth by eons of traffic. It was a surprise to see how large the stones are, 15-20" across, a bumpy ride! Cyclists on narrow tires are challenged! Continue reading
