Things are actually coming together pretty well this week. We are working on our final report and want to have that wrapped up completely before we get to the meat of the powerpoint. I feel better about where we are now than many of the weeks we have been working on this project. Last week was a little frustrating in that we had to throw out about 30 survey responses we got from mTurk because somehow they sent us international respondents. It skewed our data really badly, but it was interesting to see just how different their cultures are even... Continue reading

Well here we are, just a week left until my presentation for capstone. My partner and I launched our 2nd and final survey last week to gather additional quantitative data and insights related to the brand as well as impulse purchasing. We weren't getting the number of responses we needed, so we ended up purchasing 100 responses from mTurk in order to see what kind of data we could pull from random strangers across the country. The rate was relatively reasonable and made me feel comfortable getting some authentic data. Unfortunately, after getting some really nice insights and graphs put... Continue reading

I'm actually looking forward to class tomorrow to get another meeting with my partner on the schedule and to discuss how we might want to present our findings and the final project format. Working with a partner is a challenge in itself, and often times I wish I was doing this project alone, so I was only accountable to myself. I'm no stranger to working with someone on projects, and my entire career is collaborative, but there is definitely different styles of work in a grad school environment. I want to make sure I'm doing as much as I can... Continue reading

I feel like this is one of those times that I'm struggling to handle everything in my life well. I don't always feel like I can be a good husband, father, employee, and student all at once, and this is an area that probably suffers the most. After moving to Charlotte this weekend my responsibilities outside of the immediate future slip my mind so much easier and instead of revising my survey questions and writing my blog post on time, I'm putting together IKEA furniture for my son in the new house. Finding the work/life/school balance has been a struggle... Continue reading

It's pretty crazy we only have a little over a month left of Capstone. It's also hard to believe the amount of work we have done up to this point. Because it's such a wide-open project with a wide-open topic and such a large schedule, I'm not sure if we are where we need to be, way ahead or far behind. Our charter indicates we are on pace with where we need to be with the amount of research we should have, but getting our deliverables complete is the tricky part. We have turned in our first report based on... Continue reading

Really happy with the progress we have made this week. We have completed and finalized out first report which primarily deals with qualitative research we have done through our interviews and surveys. This was pretty extensive and we got some good insights particularly from the millennial group about their thoughts and feelings towards different candy and impulse buying. One thing we definitely noticed is the limited exposure our respondents have with new and emerging technologies as it comes to impulse buying. May we phrased questions in a weird way, or its difficult to capture that kind of information in this... Continue reading

The past week has been very helpful for my partner and I, as we spoke directly with both our client and with Drew to give our perspective on the capstone so far. It's been helpful to know that our client has been pretty flexible in regards to the data and insights we gather and collect. She seems to understand that the original scope of the project is fairly broad, and if we can identify some key insights into impulse buying as it reflects on digital technologies, we should have something very useful for our client and subclient. In addition, meeting... Continue reading

Capstone is going fairly smoothly for my partner and I. We have submitted our Phase 1 proposal to our client who indicated that we are on the right track with the kinds of research and data we want to collect, and has given us the leeway to hone in on specific insights about impulse buying we discover. If we find that AI and voice as triggers for impulse buying don't have any validity or enough data to support any sort of conclusion, we can move on and focus on areas of research that give us more viable insights. This seems... Continue reading

This week was an important week for my partner and I on developing our capstone format. We finally got a chance to get together in-person midweek to go over our proposed charter and start developing some research methods. Aside from secondary research that will give us some good insights into human psychology and consumer behavior, we laid out some additional methodology to gather research. We discussed observational research of people in the grocery store, taking notes on how they make purchase decisions in the candy aisle. There's a lot more we can observe than what it seems at first glance,... Continue reading

Admittedly, this is the week I really need to buckle down and begin research for capstone. With a revised charter in hand, my partner and I will be meeting this week to discuss how we want to tackle gathering data and research methodology to help our client out. Personally, last week was my first week at my new job and included an overnight trip for my very first day. Not exactly the easiest time to start working on this big graduate school project, but a good life lesson to try and balance all my priorities as best I can. Also... Continue reading

This has been a heck of a semester already for me. Friday was my last day working for UC and today is the start of my new job working for a branding company based in Charlotte, NC. Luckily they are letting me work from home for several months until we can move down there, but that will definitely make prioritizing my time between work obligations, family responsibilities, and capstone work much more critical. With that in mind, my partner and I have already hit the ground running trying to get ahead of schedule on our capstone. We are working on... Continue reading
