by Willy B So who was really responsible for the attacks, yesterday morning, on the two tankers in the Gulf of Oman? Was they really the result of Iran lashing out in a frustrated response to U.S. sanctions, as both... Continue reading

It seems to me that the public interest is such that Pfizer should either be forced by government mandate to carry out the necessary clinical trials or that the government itself, through NIH or other appropriate agency, do the research itself and deny Pfizer any financial benefit that may follow from positive results.

by Willy B There's been a lot of verbiage lately about the alleged nuclear threat emanating from Russia, often citing Russian President Vladimir Putin's March 1, 2018 address to the Federal Assembly as proof of Russia's malignant intentions. Mark Schneider,... Continue reading

by Willy B President Trump’s April 17 veto of the Congressional resolution calling for the ending of US support to the Saudi war in Yemen, it seems, won‛t end the conflict in that country, regardless of what side you’re on.... Continue reading

I have seen reports over the last few days that Egypt has pulled out of Bolton's Middle East Strategic Alliance, the so-called Arab NATO which is supposed to be aimed at Iran. Add that to Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi's insistence on playing an independent role in the region as a mediator (without which Iraq will probably never be rebuilt after 40 years of US instigated wars) and you just might have the seeds of a new, higher order beginning to appear in Southwest Asia, one where the peoples of the region insist on determining their own futures. perhaps this'll could be the beginning of the end of the neo-cons.

A review of publicly available reporting that I have accumulated in my files over the past two years would suggest that John Bolton's boss is really Sheldon Adelson, the Las Vegas casino king who has plied the Republican Party with... Continue reading

by Willy B Trump may have vacillated on the time line for the US military withdrawal from Syria but the available evidence suggests that he is determined that it will happen. At the same time, elements of the US national... Continue reading

Gareth Porter, in an article published in the American Conservative, definitively shows that Trump's Dec. 19 announcement of the US withdrawal from Syria was, in fact, the end of a fight of at least a year, between Trump on the... Continue reading

by Willy B Whoever's making US policy in Syria, it's certainly not Nikki Haley. Despite her rabid statement of Friday, in which she declared that "Russia will ultimately bear responsibility for any further escalations in Syria," Russian war planes joined... Continue reading

Yes, absolutely true. The Soviets didn't explode their first atom bomb until 1949 and prior to that resisted efforts that would have resulted in the US being the only possessor of the bomb. They also didn't reach parity with the US on ICBMs until sometime in the 1970's. There WAS a missile gap in the 1960-61, but it was the other way, in favor of the U.S.
This is one aspect of U.S. strategic policy making that's hardly ever admitted by the policymakers. U.S. decisions have strategic consequences that other powers will respond to. This is what the Russians have been trying to tell us for years and this is what we've been refusing to hear. Perhaps this can be attributed to the "sole super power" mentality that dates back to Dick Cheney's 1992 draft defense planning guidance in which he stated then, that it would be US policy not to tolerate any challenges to our status as the world's only superpower.

This is from the Pentagon update sent out by email, this morning: "DLA’s fuel capability arrived in Puerto Rico, including DLA personnel and 125 contract drivers for 114 fuel trucks. A DLA Rapid Deployment Team (5 personnel) will deploy tomorrow to support logistics command and control." Both governor Rosello and LTG Buchanan, in their public statements, are stressing the condition of the road system, pointing out that the interior of the island is where the problems are most challenging.

It seems like some of the commentary here has gotten way off topic, while a few of those on topic are just baloney, perhaps influenced by the opportunistic anti-Trump news media. Refutations of the anti-Trump posturing are starting to appear such as a report from last Friday in the Huffington Post quoting a USAF colonel who is also a native of Puerto Rico: “It’s just not true,” Col. Valle says of the major disconnect today between the perception of a lack of response from Washington verses what is really going on on the ground. “I have family here. My parents’ home is here. My uncles, aunts, cousins, are all here. As a Puerto Rican, I can tell you that the problem has nothing to do with the U.S. military, FEMA, or the DoD.” He goes on to say that the problem is that there are no truck drivers. Their homes are devastated, they're trying to protect their families, many roads are still blocked, there's no communication, so they can't get to work. “As a Puerto Rican, what happens here for the people is personal to me. To say that we are not provided all of the help and resources needed is just not true," Col. Valle says. "Distribution is the key, and we are working day and night on it. I’m here, my own family is here, I know how hard this is. We need to keep doing what we are doing. It’s going to take the resource of time.” the entire piece is worth the read. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/us-military-on-puerto-rico-the-problem-is-distribution_us_59ce5906e4b0f3c468060dee

I don't know, at least not yet, but it certainly does seem to me to be very close to the neo-con world outlook, though draped in more academic clothing.
Cernovich is oversimplifying it. What's driving McMaster, Petreaus and other like thinkers (there's a whole academic school around this) is the "revisionist states" idea, the idea that the US has lead the post World War II system for 70 years, but now certain "revisionist states," which are Russia, China and Iran, are seeking to change it and undermine it for entirely geopolitical reasons. They are therefore threats--bigger threats than even ISIS and Al Qaeda--and twe must be prepared to wage war against them, if necessary, to preserve that system and our leadership of it. THis is what's driving the Russian New Generation Warfare study that McMaster was leading at TraDoc before he moved to the White House. This analysis is preliminary but I hope to have it filled out in a few days.
