The patient should be the focus of health care. Makes no moral, ethical, or medical sense otherwise. Profiteers must, legally, as fiduciaries, place profit first. That requires that patients, either as patients or as citizens, not be at the center of the transaction. Removing the act of purchasing insurance from patient to employer makes it even worse. And there are alternatives. As a physician myself, and the son of a physician, I have never had a gut understanding of why patients should have to pay fee for service when they get sick. Never, going back to grade school, when my father, an old lefty as it happens, told me patiently and sympathetically How Things Were. Still doesn't. Not least because there exist alternatives which work, today, demonstrably better than profiteering, in the real world out there.
