The final stretch is finally truly here for Capstone! It has been quite a semester for this project, with lots of lessons learned and work accomplished. With our presentation to the client being next week, and the paper being turned in at the end of the month, I am grateful to have this project experience (and that everything is almost done!). Moving forward with the last weeks of this project, I have learned an important lesson about prioritization and task management. The onset of this project involved creating a charter and agreeing to our deliverables with our client. Since the creation... Continue reading

Over the past couple of weeks, I feel that Jack and I have finally found our groove and have been able to really make significant progress toward the completion of this project. Despite the fact that the project is due in two short weeks (and the paper in three), I am feeling more comfortable and at ease now than I have in weeks. We have been able to complete large portions of the project, and have established a good system for working together to make sure the rest is completed in a timely manner. From the creation and use of... Continue reading

As we round into the final phase of this project, I am reflecting back on the course of this project. This reflection, coupled with my meeting with Drew from last week has me focused on a very important lesson for my future work and projects. The basic mantra that I find myself continuously repeating is something Drew said: It is ok to be unreasonable sometimes. In this comment, he meant that on rare occasions, it is permissible and advisable to push a little beyond what your boss, co-workers, clients or other interested parties may want in order to accomplish the... This week was marked by the second check-in meeting with Drew about the current progress, and rapidly approaching conclusion of this project. Having this check-in session was very valuable for Jack and I, especially considering we only recently received content and clarifications necessary for a large chunk of this project. The most significant revelation from this meeting was that it is important to not get worked up over uncontrollable variables and components of the project. The working world is full of elements that you cannot manage yourself, and as a working professional, it is important to learn how to roll... Continue reading

This week being spring break, I figured it would be the perfect opportunity to make some serious progress on the project. Coupled with finally getting some valuable content from the clients, this week was a great change to complete entire portions of the project. I learned from this week that sometimes an apparent opportunity to slack off and be unproductive (i.e. a break from school) is actually the ideal time to push through and accomplish important work to set myself up for future success. I was able to crank through a large portion of work this week, and am now... Continue reading

This week has shown some slight progress for the project. I was able to run a website and mobile site audit for the company. In doing this, I learned several things. I learned the importance of being detail-oriented. The audit I used to assess both the desktop and mobile sites went into far more depth than I likely would have in just looking through the site looking for strengths and weaknesses. As such, I learned that going into a task with a set idea or plan (even if it weren't something as official as the audit I used) makes the... Continue reading

This past week was a boon for our project and moving forward. We were able to meet face-to-face with several representatives from WebFEAT, and delve into the company and project. This meeting not only informed many questions about our work, but helped to build a relationship between us and the client. It was an extremely clarifying and informative session, which proved the value of face-to-face communication in the digitally-driven world we live in. Beyond the obvious function of answering questions about the company and project, this meeting also taught me several things about the marketing process and client relationships. I... Moving through this week of the project, the main lesson has definitely been the importance of flexibility. Due to some unforeseen busyness and complications, my partner and I have had to handle delays in the finalization and signing of our charter. This includes delays in beginning several components of our project. This is to no one's fault, but has made me realize the need to remain adjustable in terms of this project. In trying to remain productive, my partner and I have adjusted our dates for components of the project, and have found additional preparation work to do before working... Continue reading

Reflecting on this past week, one small lesson I learned is to be more attentive to event the small details. In turning in the charter, I accidentally mis-titled the document. While Drew was kind enough to tell me and let me fix it, this would not always be the case. Moving into the professional realm, it will be ever- important to be as much of a perfectionist as possible. A mis-labeled document may be the difference between getting a job and not. Another lesson from this week is the importance of flexibility. Our client informed us she had a very... Continue reading

This week has been all about looking forward for the Capstone project. Having met with the client and determining the big picture deliverables to be completed over the next couple of months, my partner and I used this week to plan and write our project charter. The charter is extremely important, as it outline the specific tasks to be completed by the two of us, as well as the due dates. This task- of designing and assigning our project for the next 3 months- has proven to be slightly more complicated than initially met the eye. Knowing the overall task... Continue reading

As I begin this final semester of my MS- Marketing program, I am excited and anxious about the infamous Capstone project. While I anticipate it being a LOT of work, I am excited to see how much I am able to learn, experience and grow in these few months of real-world experience. Having just had my first meeting with my client, I am excited for the months ahead. My partner, Jack Harper, and I are working with Michelle Selnick at WebFEAT Complete, an SEO and e-marketing company. Doing a marketing project for a marketing company is an interesting if not...
