As most of the locals, Marinakis has been a fan of Olympiacos F.C., a local football club from Piraeus. His father was a member of the club board, but Evangelos took things to the next level in this area, too. He purchased the club and became the chairman in 2010. Under his helm, the team won seven Greek National League titles in a row from 2010/11 to 2016/17. Olympiacos F.C. also won three cups during that time and successfully participated in the UEFA Champions League, the top-tier European competition for football clubs. In 2017, Marinakis completed the takeover of Nottingham Forest, the football club competing in English Championship. In 2016, the Greek businessman used Alter Ego Media S.A., one of the companies he owns, to purchase a national television license for approximately $82.8 million (EUR 73.9 million). The same company acquired the Lambrakis Press Group, which owns daily and weekly newspapers in Greece, as well as several magazines and a news portal. Marinakis entered politics in 2014 when he was elected as a member of the Piraeus city council. He stated at the time that Piraeus needs to be developed as the primary cruise ship destination in Europe and that the port needs to preserve its public nature. He invested his own funds in renovation and construction of kids’ playgrounds, parks, squares, and sports facilities. Some media were claiming that he was related to the Golden Dawn, a Greek far-right political party. Marinakis strongly denied this in an interview.
