va tech takes down NC by 13??!! another one i didn't see coming

i had to work today and couldn't watch the game until now - very difficult watching the canes having one of their worse FT games; they were whipped 17-6 point-wise and that was by far and away the difference in this game - rebounds didn't help, losing that battle 40-31 . . . but the canes only lost the 2nd chance pts. by a 13-8 margin . . . considering the size difference, i'll take that any day; particularly 'cause miami won the pts.-off-TO battle 11-6 and miami was better in 3's than duke (8 of 21 vs. 5 of 19) - overall, i kept thinking duke was bigger, badder, better, but then the canes would always find a way to miraculously hang in there (until the end) and i really have to give them credit!! . . . it was especially weird watching them try to get to the paint thru the redwood forest - wong got swallowed so bad on every move to the basket, you'd have thought duke's nickname was "linda lovelace" - agree with ogv, that wong could use an extra "mcgusty" year, to get to the level mac achieved by returning for his senior year - bring on the ncaa's!

- florida lost in the SEC tourny; that feels good - don't see how the canes can get by duke, but i sure hope they make it exciting! NC just punished VA by 20 pts; i DEFINITELY don't want to watch the canes have to bend over before they fall

after 3 q's, canes women losing pretty badly - if they come back (down 18 i think) vs #1 seed it'll be history book time - in between, i switch over to canes baseball and remember why i haven't watched a game in a couple years B O R I N G ! ! !

just revisited last year's ncaa tourny - 7 teams von ACC: - 5 knocked out in initial round (clemson, nc, va tech, va, ga tech) - 2 (fsu & syracuse) made it to final 8 - gonna be hard, but gotta rep the ACC better or soon our conference respect will have swirled down the drain

re: BASEBALL - speaking of disappointment, also thru a decade or more, canes baseball has simply not cut it on the big stage - let's see if dimare can finally get his team to quit underperforming in the bigger moments - otherwise, move on to a coach who can actually get the canes over the hump again

re: LADY CANES - i feel like i've had at least a decades-worth of disappointment in them as far as faltering in big moments; . . . so far, they have not done that; and i am crossing my fingers, that they will finally advance beyond the "diasppointment curve" and knock off nc state in acc finals or advance far into the ncaa tourny instead of exiting right away

the bad news: NC unexpectedly takes down duke at cameron - meaning canes will be 4th seed instead of 3rd - and the canes will not be the ONLY team to have beat duke at cameron this year - still don't know how NC pulled that off, given the historic nature of the game; something like 92 former players showing up for coach k's last cameron game

- lady canes just took down ND by 3 in a very tight game - i just cannot believe the state of canes bb this week: 5-0 - pretty sure nc state is one step too far the women after so many games, but i'll be in my seat, looking for a miracle! 12 noon your time!

MEN - the men came from waaaaay down (18 down in the 2nd half!) to knock off syracuse in a game i thought they might lose by 30 - tonite was miller time; dude came thru big time at big moments and was easily the best man on the team tonite! - small fact: bench points for both teams: total of 3! - if you look at the box stats, you'd think the canes had lost: syracuse made 11 3's; miami only 3 of 18; syr. also made 21 of 23 FT's with miami only getting 14 of 18; nor did the canes win the rebounding (34-36) - but they pulled some wonderful magic out their collective butt at syracuse' arena to end a great regular season with 22 wins and only 9 losses!

The second-seeded Cardinals led 59-44 with 5:44 to go, and, in the words of Meier “we were dead in the water.” But UM freshman guard Ja’Leah Williams made a layup, and then the Harden Show began. The play-by-play book said it all: Made three-point jumper Destiny Harden. Made layup Destiny Harden. Made layup Destiny Harden. Made driving layup Destiny Harden. Made free throw Destiny Harden. Then, with 32 seconds left in the game, a Harden three-pointer tied the game 59-59. Louisville had the ball but turned it over with 1.7 seconds left on a shot clock violation. Miami took a timeout, and Meier opted to call a play for Harden at the urging of assistant coach Fitzroy Anthony who told her Harden would win the game for them. Kelsey Marshall fired a bounce pass to Harden, she caught it, turned and leaped over Louisville guard Hailey Van Lith for the game-winner as the clock expired. When the ball went in, ending UM’s frantic comeback, Van Lith buried her face into her hands and stared ahead incredulously. The Louisville players were stunned, as was everyone else in the building, including Meier. “When the ball was in the air I didn’t think it was good, I was thinking overtime, and then it went in and then I was like `Oh my god, I think we just won!” Meier said. Harden scored the game’s final 15 points and finished with a career-high 27 points on 11-for-15 shooting. speaking of sport & ukraine: here's an inspiring read regarding the klitschko bro-for-it! "Between the two of them, the Klitschko brothers had the heavyweight division sewn up tight for over a decade, holding all the major belts between them while refusing, on their mother's wishes, to fight each other. They had extremely unusual backgrounds for boxers - Ukrainian sons of a Soviet military officer, they both hold doctoral degrees and speak multiple languages - but they became widely beloved in the boxing community by fighters of all backgrounds for their professionalism and integrity. When older brother Vitali retired, he entered Ukrainian politics and became mayor of Kyiv, a post he still holds, advocating a pro-Europe, pro-democracy vision for his country. The younger Wladimir fought until 2017. He may be known to some non-boxing fans for being the former husband of American actress Hayden Panettiere - she's tiny and he is a literal giant so they made a memorable sight at red carpet events. Since his retirement he has been busy with various business and charity endeavors as well as his gig as an adjunct professor at Switzerland's University of St. Gallen. After the Russian invasion a few days ago, Vitali made the unusual choice for a sitting politician to take up arms and lead from the front-lines, while Wlad has journeyed back to Ukraine and joined the Kyiv Territorial Defense Brigade. Both brothers are millionaires many times over and could easily have chosen a more conventional route of raising money and awareness from the sidelines. As a boxing writer, fan, and hobbyist participant, I find it impossible not to be moved by their courage. They are acting like giants right now". posted by Will Stenberg February 25, 2022
