lady canes pull out a close win!
. . . yes, pitt hadn't played in forever, so the canes shoulda won
. . . but after using every tool in their shed to dig a hole deep enough to bury both bigfoot and his sister, sasquatsch, with enough room left over for a mid-sized tyrannosaurus rex, they struck gold at the bottom of that hole, finding enough climbing gear to get back out
. . . evidently, they played their best bb of the year during the 2nd quarter; wish they'd do that while i'm watching

now miami is losing by only 1 point instead of 21 at the half (37-36)
. . . apparently having me turn off the game until 1 minute was left in the half, was the kind of rejection that the women needed (rumor has it, the phrase "even alpine has ditched us" made them take a hard look in the mirror)

now that would be a step towards democracy.

nancy's been a good speaker, but it's definitely time to make way for some younger blood; no idea though, how her removal would support a "step toward democracy"? maybe Q will tell us in his next posting?
. . . biggest step toward democracy involved a massive DC bowel movement that landed in FL; be on the lookout for algal blooms down there

finally was able to watch the replay a while ago:
- after the first couple minutes, i was thinking, "do i really want to put myself thru another "boston college" experience??!!
- but then the canes started really stepping up:
. . . nysier brooks was FANTASTIC, harlond beverly did great work, both olaniji & cross were very good . . . and yes wong was outta dis wold!!!!!!
- i am still disappointed in anthony walker, who seems fantastically athletic, but comes across to me as "whirling dervish" energy, and lacks the discipline & focus that wong & beverly have . . . really need him to make a big step, with us being down soooooo many players
- also, deng gak just seems sooo fragile; could call him "stick man"; no way he'll ever be able to play major minutes
. . . but it's fantastic, that larranaga managed to pull in senior transfer nysier brooks, cause that dude has meat on the bone and hunger in his spirit and he makes us a force in the paint; particularly with rebounding
- tip o the cap to larranaga for coaching his broken team to this win over excellent louisville
- p.s. it's fun to finally watch the OTHER team be on the horrible end of 3-pt shooting!!
- p.p.s. i'm already wondering which bb players will return, instead of going pro; i'd really love to watch a healthy(ish) canes team play; i bet they'd be up near or at the top of the ACC THIS year, if healthy, but i'm worried about the traditional siren song of the NBA

Just For Kicks
In 2019, Jose Borregales – who grew up cheering for the Hurricanes and hoping to one day suit up for them – was at FIU, where he broke school records and kicked field goals of 29, 50 and 53 yards in the Panthers’ stunning win over Miami. Not long after that game, though, Borregales sought a bigg...
- men's bb:
BC was on fire last night
- except the senior transfer, brooks, we are not good enough with all frosh/sophomores, cause covid and tons of injuries have cut way into both the quantity & quality of our practice time
. . . last night we couldn't keep up w/o our 2 upperclass injured
. . . their confidence kept building, ours sagged and ran off like a climate-warmed glacier shytting melt-water
- i actually turned the game off with about 8 minutes still left; very un-alpine'ish

Not time to bury that casket on 2021 season just yet . . .

oooh, nice game! (had to wait for the replay)
. . . the canes took out a good team today, though still missing players
- and yes, hope the casket morphs into a cascade (of W's)

86 - i agree, we're talking to different people
. . . and i know this isn't the "open opinion blog", so i'll leave off now
- just got back from my 1st vaccination (cause my wife is in danger and i'm care-giver); next one in 3 weeks
. . . then a bit of freedom
- to tell the truth, i think that after the health workers, etc. get the shots, (+ younger-than-ancient in danger due to conditions like asthma), the next ones to get vaccinated should be kids & teens, so they can go back to school and start having a normal life again; then college students, ...
and at the end of the list should be those with alzheimers & demenz or over the age of, i don't know, 85 or 90 ... jmo

I will say one thing: Many people are mistaken that this current state of affairs we find ourselves in is all about one man. But is about much, much larger issues than that. Even when the one man goes away all things will not be made right instantly or even soon or maybe ever. But time will tell and I for one hopes that our Country heals.
Posted by: 86Cane | January 08, 2021 at 01:19 PM
just a quick note to say: i don't talk to anyone who thinks this is all about one man
. . . he is seen more as the "full bloom" of many things that have been happening over time; the large flower you focus on, knowing there is a whole bush and root system that led to that blossoming

women's bb is frustrating
. . . they are always "decent", but never excel
. . . never bottom-feeders, but never in the top, they are the definition of mediocre
. . . katie seems like a passionate coach, so i don't know if it's recruiting, development, miami-not-a-good-destination-for-elite-bb-players, . . .
emotionally, i've hit the setting of: annoying/irritating/"try a new coach when katie's contract is finished"

canes mens bb team breaking my heart
. . . totally snakebit with injuries
. . . playing with lots of heart but not getting it done in the last 30 seconds of the last 3 games, losing by a TOTAL of 5 points
(sigh) . . . this was finally gonna be THE season

- so, the dolphins were an up n coming team with good coaching . . . then they chose to study the canes vs. NC game and took all the wrong lessons from it
. . . the end to football seasons for miami fans have only rarely been uplifting over the last couple decades
- and even my heat managed to make the wrong kind of history while playing the bucks at the end of december
- i'm glad i have other things in my life besides sports, but
(1) i miss having more uplifting & fun moments; and
(2) regarding miami football, i really miss post-seasonal relevance

Let's Go Bowling: 2020 Edition
Your Miami Hurricanes have one final piece of business in 2020 and that is a game against Oklahoma State in the Cheez-It Bowl today at 5:30 PM. The Canes know a victory at Camping World Stadium will put the finishing touches on a strong season and give the program momentum to build off of in 202...

- i wish the canes had beaten NC; and i wish they were a different team and were ready to play in the "Relevance Bowl"
- they didn't; they're not
- for the team that they are, i think this is a good bowl . . . and though i'd be lying if i said i expected them to win, if they would win it'd feel like a very good win to me
. . . and i'm looking forward to staying up hours past my bedtime to watch it tonite, despite my crash & burn tomorrow

Seriously speaking...I will be retiring in Europe within the next 7-10 years. Southern Portugal (Algarve Region/Lagos or Albufeira) or Spain (Cosat Del Sol Region/Marbella or Alicante) or Italy (Umbria Region) are the most likely landing places.
However, if middle Europe comes into play it will be Solvenia (Ljubljana) or Czech Republic (Prague). We are dying to visit Switzerland and will soon but the cost of living is way too expensive to retire there.
Posted by: 86Cane | December 28, 2020 at 03:58 PM
that is VERY, VERY cool, sir!!!
- spain & portugal are the only two western european countries i've never visited; nor southern france, southern italy
. . . i just avoid warm areas (the whole mediterranean area) and am not nearly as attracted to either the nature or culture of warm regions
- middle & northern europe are my places
- mts instead of sea or ocean;
- austria, switzerland, parts of germany, norway, scotland, wales, england are my types of places
- slovenia & czech republic also sound good
. . . never made it to the first; finally hit prague with family in 2016 and was absolutely blown away; my wife found an amazing deal in a beautiful place during off-season in the old city on the hill
- switzerland is VERY expensive; but we loved it the best; it's easy for us to get to with bikes and we did a shytload of bike tours there; hikes too, going in october after the lifts were stopped and only a few people would hike way up to the high places = we would have our hikes mostly to ourselves (i would pay for the privilege in knee pain on the way back down)
- had an amazing 2-week vacation set up for the faroe islands in may '17, but a stroke hit my wife bad and landed her in a wheelchair, so we never got to carry out our many "farther northern european" plans
- and now we have a smallish circle for our rickshaw rides, which we do even in 0° weather; that has replaced our hiking/biking/travelling, but i've got LOTS of fantastically romantic memories of earlier times!
