And now we have this from Bolton's bunch: Lebanon—What happened? https://www.fasfreedom.com/2020/08/lebanon-what-happened/ by David Wurmser - remember him from Iraq War fame? It's rather entertaining.
No fireworks mentioned in this account. Not sure if the photo is of the workmen repairing the doors in the hour prior to the explosion. "On the 4th of August, at 15:00 local time, a blacksmith was asked to close the holes in the warehouse to prevent potential smuggling of the content. The blacksmith was not informed about the hazardous content of the warehouse, nor he was told to take the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of metal particles that produce fragments and can trigger a fire. He was working at a distance no more than a few centimetres from the AN bags that were lying on the floor, from which a clear substance was leaking. Once the job was done, between 16:30 and 17:00, smoke was seen coming from the warehouse. Firemen were called to deal with the potential fire. At 18:08 the first explosion was heard, followed by the second one over a minute later. After the first explosion, a fire ignited inside the warehouse. The fire generated more heat, enough for the entire stock of AN to blow up and create a vacuum (negative pressure). The pressure of the explosion caused the many casualties and devastating destruction in the city. Who called the blacksmith and allocated the budget for his work? Was he informed of the hazard of welding next to Ammonium Nitrate? Why were the 2,750 tons of AN left for more than six years in non-regulation storage for no justifiable reason whatsoever?" https://ejmagnier.com/2020/08/07/the-beirut-explosion-who-is-responsible/ Could have been metal fragments from a disk grinder, spark's from a cutting torch or arc welder that smoldered for a while then began to flame.
Fred: I'm not letting Obama off the hook. I was opposed to it then and still oppose it.
"MO Biden is devoted to Israel in a simple minded way typical of the man. Trumpy is IMO cynically courting Zionist money and influence and doesn't really give a s--t about Israel." Aren't they both courting the money? Biden doesn't want you to know about it. How naive' of him! Donald doesn't give a s--t if you know or not.
The first news report after the explosion that I heard coming out of Lebanon that day was of a fire in a warehouse storing fireworks.
"Northstream II, you may not be aware of the latest threat, or warning if you prefer." Who are the real traitors here? Is it Omar or is it Cruz, Cotton and Johnson who want to aid and abet the wholesale rape of our natural resources (NG) by shipping it out of our land and sending it all over the world as (LNG) to enrich themselves and their gas industry cronies?
Fred: "She might be an intellegence risk due to family ties/loyalties, but I doubt she's heading back any time soon." What are you suggesting?
Deap You misquoted Roosevelt "You have nothing to fear but fear itself". It's "We have nothing to fear but fear itself". Big difference in meaning, Trump probably would have used 'You' also
Colonel Lang wrote: "do you think Ilhan Omar is not still a Somali citizen?" If she didn't renounce her Somali citizenship, which as you said she isn't required to do under our laws. then I think she may have lost it under Somali law. Law No. 28 of 22 December 1962 - Somali Citizenship Article 2. Acquisition of Citizenship by Operation of Law Any person: a) whose father is a Somali citizen; b) who is a Somali residing in the territory of the Somali Republic or abroad and declares to be willing to renounce any status as citizen or subject of a foreign country shall be a Somali Citizen by operation of law.
Bill Wade: It's our first home that we purchased 40 years ago. It's not worth much in today's market and never will be - too small.
Colonel: The current number of deaths as a fraction of the population tells little about how many will die on the road to herd immunity. Why? Because only 4.9 out of 328 million (1.5% minimum) of the population) have been infected so far. This is based on confirmed cases - actual infections are several (many?) times more since there are many with no symptoms who are now immune. Which means we are likely a lot closer to the herd immunity goal. We need to have about 70% (230 million) of the population infected to reach immunity, but we really don't know how many have been infected so far. At first I thought these numbers would be straightforward and easy to find. They aren't. The only publicly available data I could find are some serology studies done in April with wildly varying results. As high 23% in NYC and low as 1% in Utah. A lot has changed since April.
Bill wrote: "When I talk to someone who's so afraid to go out, I ask them "what if this thing lasts for 10 years"?" We can dramatically shorten this if we go the "Herd Immunity" route. Of course as with everything there are risks in this approach. Herd immunity for Covid is estimated to occur when about 70% of the population becomes infected, assuming that reinfection cannot occur in the short term. The current US fatalities versus infections is .033 70% of the US population is 244 million. If those citizens under say 50 years would start going out and party hearty to speed up this pandemic we could possibly reach herd immunity by election day. We've got a long way to go and time is of the essence. So far we have only 4.9 million cases to date, we need at least 244 million infections and nearly 8 million Covid deaths before November. My wife and I are both over 70 so unfortunately we won't be able to take part. We'll just hang back and wait until you do your duty, then go shopping for a new home as soon as the financial collapse gets underway. Another thing: 1) This strategy would lessen the need for a vaccine. It should meet the approval of the anti-vaxers. 2) The anti-maskers will love it. 3) It'll teach Fauci a lesson. Keep your sunny side up and lets get rolling! Good Luck
From a story in AlJazeera: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/08/officials-knew-danger-beirut-port-years-200805032416684.html "he ship's dangerous cargo was then offloaded and placed in Hangar 12 of Beirut port, a large grey structure facing the country's main north-south highway at the main entrance to the capital. Months later, on June 27, 2014, then-director of Lebanese Customs Shafik Merhi sent a letter addressed to an unnamed "Urgent Matters judge", asking for a solution to the cargo, according to documents shared online. Customs officials sent at least five more letters over the next three years - on December 5, 2014, May 6, 2015, May 20, 2016, October 13, 2016, and October 27, 2017 - asking for guidance and warning that the material posed a danger, Badri Daher, the current director of Lebanese Customs, told broadcaster LBCI on Wednesday. They proposed three options: Export the ammonium nitrate, hand it over to the Lebanese Army, or sell it to the privately-owned Lebanese Explosives Company. One letter sent in 2016 noted there had been "no reply" from judges to previous requests. It pleaded: "In view of the serious danger of keeping these goods in the hangar in unsuitable climatic conditions, we reaffirm our request to please request the marine agency to re-export these goods immediately to preserve the safety of the port and those working in it, or to look into agreeing to sell this amount" to the Lebanese Explosives Company. Again, there was no reply. A year later, Daher, the new Lebanese Customs director, wrote to a judge once again. In the October 27, 2017, letter, Daher urged the judge to come to a decision on the matter in view of "the danger ... of leaving these goods in the place they are, and to those working there". Nearly three years later, the ammonium nitrate was still in the hangar.

Colonel: Thanks for posting this and confirming that neither the challenger nor the incumbent are worth the powder to blow them up. It will be up to the voters to decide which is the least worst scumbag. Rod
Colonel: Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Rod
akapatience: This is simply fake news. There is no ban on HCQ in Ohio. It can be dangerous to patients in a non-hospital setting. It is still being used here. https://www.dispatch.com/article/20200729/NEWS/200728597 "Jul 1, 2020 FDA cautions against use of hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine for COVID-19 outside of the hospital setting or a clinical trial due to risk of heart ..." https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-safety-and-availability/fda-cautions-against-use-hydroxychloroquine-or-chloroquine-covid-19-outside-hospital-setting-or It's use had been restricted to initially prevent hoarding and misuse. Recently I've been reflecting on the events of the last few months. In particular the power of the American consumer. Frankly, I'm surprised. We have managed to shut down this economy in a matter of a few weeks. Think of the power we have if this force were united for the common good! Walrus: I agree with your comment 100%. Rod
So Fauci has been wrong about everything? A casual observation and a question: Whose job is on the line? It ain't Fauci's.
Fauci doesn't matter. Over the weekend the WH tried to strongarm parents to get on board with school reopening. They are fucking with the wrong interest group.
JCJoan: Don't worry about it - "It will just go away". :)
Colonel: RE: Today's fatality rate among the infected in the US is 2.8% I get 5.18% for 24JUN20 Teacher always told me: "SHOW YOUR MATH!", so here it is: (121,117/2,336,615)*100=5.18% (TOTAL DEATHS/TOTAL CASES)*100=%Total Deaths
The Colonel wrote: "The people along the Ohio River did not want to secede from Virginia." I recall reading a book written after the war. It mentioned that travel on the Ohio below the Mason Dixon line was in hostile territory. Boats were often fired upon from both sides of the river. Only the counties north of the MD had a grievance with VA. They felt they were being shortchanged by Richmond. Now they complain that they are being shortchanged by Charleston.

The DC Guard is armed. Armed with scrub brushes and trash bags to clean up the mess.
