Very cool. I pass by often but have never visited. I will have to change that.

Saffron used to be a favorite of mine but it went downhill when it was bought. Everyone swore the same recipes would be used, which I'm sure they are, but they're just following a formula and not cooking with love and passion. Not a visit would go by without Su-Mei Yu in the kitchen carefully crafting, smelling, serving, etc. and when she left the building so too did everything that made the place special and high quality. About the only thing that's still edible are the spring rolls, mainly on account of the fragrant mint, otherwise the chicken and every single soup, noodle, or rice dish I've had has been greasy, tasteless, and bland.

This bagel shop is probably the most decent one in San Diego proper. Early on the lines were crazy due to inefficiencies - the menu is tiny and hard to see so people would take half an hour each at the counter. If I'm the area now I'll stop by for a dozen donut holes, priced at $2 and they usually throw way more than a dozen in the bag. :D

That looks awesome - I'm comparing it with something like K Sandwiches which is mainly bread these days. I'll give this a try!

I've been once and had a similar experience. Oscar's not too far from here does the same 10 pounds of cabbage trick to hide the fact that there's practically no fish. I'm grateful to be spoiled with excellent tacos of all sorts in the South Bay!

I'm afraid to try this place and develop another addiction! Sweet/salty soft bread is the best.

I've never been here but it sounds great. Point Loma is a part of town I don't get to nearly enough!

Definitely the end of an era. I had many great meals here, though I had noticed the slipping quality and the ongoing Americanization of the menu. Hopefully the new owners and business will do well.

That's too bad about the duck. I've been striking out as well. I've not had it at Noble Chef but we ordered duck at Jasmine last visit and it was about the same as what you describe here.

The pandemic has really shifted the way we eat. On a few occasions I’ve gone to pick up food without pre-ordering, and even though the place is empty when I get there, the employees are frenzy-prepping food orders almost to the point of running into each other behind the counter. The proverbial line out the door is there, just in a different way. I’m curious to see what becomes of the balance - the convenience and increasing normality of online ordering, and the importance of stopping and taking a few moments to breathe during the day.

Lovely pictures of Zion and environs. One of my favorite parks to visit since it's quite something to be in and surrounded by the canyon as opposed to admiring it from above.

I heard glowing things about the San Ysidro shop (pre Michelin Plate nod) and unfortunately only got around to visiting when some of the quality had started to slip. I know the owner had spoken about running the business by herself - doing everything from the front-of-the-house service to the cooking, and she knew she was cutting corners as a result. Unless she has invested in a team I would imagine the burden is even greater in a more central area. With more quality control this could be a star again.

I sound like I’m a 100 years old about everything these days. “I remember when gas was $1/gallon.” “I remember when eggs were $2/dozen.” “I remember when lunch at K Sandwiches was $5 and some change.” “Is a Happy Meal 10 bucks yet?” In all seriousness, I think it will all depend on demand, and if that goes down, so too will prices, and we’ll see that correction that the Federal Reserve keeps talking about. Here’s hoping!

The hot chicken fad is definitely dying - for a while it seemed like everyone in the county was within a 10-minute drive from a hot chicken shop. I felt like the whole thing jumped the shark when it showed up on KFC menus several years ago.

I've slowly been working my way through the menu here. Great place, I can easily see a few things here becoming 'faves'. Usually very crowded, and you're not kidding about the parking.

Yes I think one and done is perfectly fine for a freelance blog. The food isn’t comp’d by an employer so there’s a monetary consideration, and consistency is on them (the restaurant) and shouldn’t require multiple trips by a diner - we don’t get discounts when food is too salty, not warm, packaged badly, etc so that being your experience and mentioning it is fair game, even if it’s one time. They should strive for excellence every time. The only drawback is in not being able to get a better feel for more of the dishes, imho, especially at places that run the gamut and do a bunch of different items/cuisines.

I've heard many great things about Zgara and need to visit. Ironically my office is right around the corner but I've been wfh'ing for two years now. As a result, I've been able to enjoy more of the food in Chula Vista since I can do pick up's during the week when places aren't absolutely mobbed.

There's one of these in east Chula Vista (Eastlake area) that I've been tempted to try, but a lot of the reviews I've seen border on scathing and point to inconsistent food. I'll have to at least try the fried chicken at some point.

The prices look like a great value and the stuff of pre-pandemic times. Very often I'm finding lunch to be a $20 proposition now for one entree once you've factored in tax and tip.

I used to work near here and my colleagues were fans of breakfast for lunch. It was a nice chance for me to try some breakfast foods since I'm not known to get out of bed to eat at any 'a.m.' time. I'll never forget some 13-egg omelette they brought me that was the size of a small country.

Next time you are in the area b. patisserie makes the kouign-amann by which all other kouign-amann are judged, at least the americanized version. Truly a delight!

That sounds delicious and looks like quite a mise en place!

I’ve been impressed with the pizza here, and they’re honest about the ‘homage’ factor rather than pretending it’s traditional-style stuff like every other Italian place in the city. In the end that’s secondary anyways - it’s tasty stuff, and that’s what matters most.
