Huh, I always assumed the accepted explanation for this phenomenon was that the rich were considering not their absolute level or wealth, which would indeed benefit from Democratic rule, but their relative wealth. As in they would rather have a larger share of a smaller pie, even if it's less than they'd get if the pie were larger and they had a smaller proportion of it. If the poorer parts of society start getting a more reasonable share of the national income, the whole social order might start coming apart.
