The past few weeks I have had the pleasure of interning at ActBlue as a tech intern. It's been a great experience and I've had the opportunity to work on a few cool projects. One of my favorite projects during this time, has been experimenting with service workers to prototype... Continue reading

A few months back, I attended OSCON which was an 18-track conference, at least. I wasn't alone being overwhelmed by the unmanageable amount of material. Choice paralysis was the condition of the show. But it doesn't take the 18 tracks of OSCON, or the 50+∞ tracks of SXSW Interactive to... Continue reading

That's it! All of this was whirring away in downtown Boston, some of it for years and years. We switched most of this stuff off over the summer, moving our stack to the nebulous clouds, replicated in Miami and in Virginia. With the election over and the era ended, all... Continue reading

so, we're using a new service that we've built to tokenize credit cards. we are running this tokenizer at a subdomain of (while the app itself runs at a different subdomain: ""). thus we run into the great same origin policy. and sadly, we're reminded that nothing is easy.... Continue reading

We have another milestone to celebrate around the office: 2 million donations! And we got there only a year and a half after we hit 1 million. Averaged out over that period, we're talking 55,000 donations a month during some of slowest months of the election cycle. Here's why it matters: our infrastructure is what turns grassroots passion into political results. While the "enthusiasm gap" was making headlines across the country, Democratic donors flocked to... ## Disaster ## Shortly before the end of August one of our cloud providers told us they needed us to move from one set of servers to another. Apart from the hassle of moving "servers" I didn't think this was going to be a big deal. I scheduled some time,... Continue reading

The torrent of grassroots money flowing into Wisconsin peaked in March, but it continues flowing in April, funding a variety of organizations that are laying the groundwork for the summer's recall elections. Number of contributions 51,733 Total raised $2,581,828.41 Average Contribution size $49.91 Committees receiving money 678 Fundraising pages receiving money 763 Pages created 350 Here's how those numbers stack up relative to 2009, and to the same point in the last presidential election cycle.... The first quarter of the 2011-12 election cycle is on the books, and it's a doozy. We saw a massive uptick in contributions relative to previous cycles, driven by the backlash against Gov. Walker's union-busting in Wisconsin. That drove a precipitous drop in the average contribution size relative to 2009, which was made starker by a higher-than-usual contribution size in 2009 thanks to inaugural events. All in all, the trends are exactly what we want... Continue reading

As I mentioned last month, Wisconsin is the story of 2011 so far. In late February, Republican Gov. Scott Walker attempted to undermine a core Democratic constituency by revoking the right of public workers to bargain collectively, ostensibly for budgetary reasons. When Democratic state senators fled the state to deny him the legislative quorum required to pass a budgetary measure, Wisconsin Republicans declared that it didn't impact the budget and passed the law without warning... The story of February (and, it seems likely, March) was Wisconsin. In many ways, Wisconsin is a perfect example of what ActBlue can do. When the story first broke, there was little hint that the conflict between Gov. Walker and Democrats in the state senate would escalate as it did. As the story unfolded, day by day, ActBlue provided a crucial channel for Democrats across the country to support their counterparts in Wisconsin. That story... Continue reading

Guest Post by Steve Gold, General Counsel for ActBlue Stemming the growing tide of money in politics has become a fool's errand. Recent opinions out of the Supreme Court have made it clear that the entrenched conservative majority have every intention of expanding the scope of constitutionally protected spending in campaigns, which means even more advertising by independent groups. And the Court's attitude towards political money has now trickled down to the FEC, which is... Continue reading

Before we begin, a housekeeping note: I'm going to expand our analysis a bit. While year-over-year growth is important to us as an organization, for observers of politics the more interesting comparison is where we were at the same point in a similar cycle. To provide both views I'm going to compare 2011 to both 2009 and 2007, when we were at the same point in the cycle. Number of contributions 10,120 Total raised $636,711.13... Continue reading

Guest post by Steve Gold, General Counsel at ActBlue Tie votes split 3-3 along party lines* have become par for the course at the Federal Election Comission (FEC), which requires a four vote majority to take any action. In the latest deadlock, the FEC failed to take up the task of making rules to comply with last year's Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. FEC. The result has been increasing uncertainty about campaign finance... Continue reading

The latter months of summer can be slow at times in political fundraising. After passing the June 30th federal fundraising deadline (which exists for a number of states as well), donors can sometimes disappear. But over 50,000 donors later, nearly $6.7 million was raised through ActBlue in June and July for Democrats up and down the ballot. The following shows our end of summer combined July & August statistics for activity on Number of... Continue reading

Guest post by Steve Gold, General Counsel, ActBlue Commenting in a post on Facebook recently about Target shareholders' demands for a review of the company's political contributions policy, CREDO wrote: This is really promising. If we can bring BOTH shareholder and consumer pressure on corporations that use their deep pockets to support right wing candidates, there is a chance to limit the damage of corporate influence in elections. And then we can pass a constitutional... Continue reading

The whole ActBlue team just got back from a few days in the dry heat of Las Vegas, and while LeBron was partying we were hard at work helping the Democrats at Netroots Nation 2010. We got to see some of ActBlue's favorite activists (hey Edgery), daily reads (hiya Markos), and movement builders (what's up Adam Green?). But the real story was that you couldn't turn around without running into a Democratic candidate eager to... Continue reading

Ten years ago my AP Government teacher told me--with an indulgent smile for my youthful skepticism--that incumbent status was its own reward. Fundraising networks, establishment support, name recognition, high-powered surrogates; how, he asked, could an insurgent candidate hope to overcome these advantages? At first blush, the returns in Arkansas validate his certainty--Sen. Blanche Lincoln survived a primary challenge from Bill Halter and the coalition of progressive groups that backed him. The reality is a little... Continue reading

Grab your coffee and make sure your laptop is fully charged, the end of the first quarter 2010 is upon us! Why do we all fundraise at the End of the Quarter?
