Thanks for this - I needed it today. I am a serial self-injurer, pushing myself hard until pain stops me, learning (struggling!) to rest, recovering, and then when I don't feel the pain any more, doing it all over again. Today I reinjured a hip muscle while running, and this post helped me see the wisdom of having more than two gears. I'll take that away and noodle it. Looking forward to hearing what you come up with too.

Brilliant! Probably the most lucid analysis of the epitaphs of methods I've read. Should be required reading in all technology and project management training. Thank you.
Lovely blog. I particularly enjoyed the truffle pigs metaphor. And as you say, we need to practice. I've been working with some great tools for practicing, called the Core Protocols (Open source, avail on One of the tools, Check In, provides a clean container for sharing feelings, while making sharing safe enough that starting to practice isn't an overwhelmingly risky venture. On safety, freedom and coherence in communication using the Core, see my latest book: Closing The Me-You Gap.
