New hobby
I have taken up crochet by way of participating in this Granny Square Sampler Crochet-Along. Thank you, Blair. What a fun way to play with color—one of my favorite things. Although I bought a few extra colors to round out my palette, this afghan will be mostly made of scraps. This has been t...
Thanks, Lupine!
KCWC Day 6: Done!
This is my favorite of the three dresses I made this week. Probably due to this gorgeous fabric I bought at bolt on Monday. I really didn’t know what I was going to do with it at the time, but as it sat on the cutting table all week it became very clear on Friday morning that I would use it fo...
Molly, you make me smile. Thanks!

Laura, Yes it really a knit! : > ) My daughter is almost 7 and this fits her fairly well, but probably not past this summer. You could size up Rae’s pattern or you could use any t-shirt pattern really. Jalie 2805 is a good one and comes in a huge range of sizes. Or you could simply trace any t-shirt that fits her. Thanks for your comments!

Jackie, unfortunately I don’t have any other info on the fabric—there is no designer listed. So sorry!

Yes, it’s really is knit. A cotton rayon blend I think. I don’t have any more information on it and I don’t think you’d find it online anywhere BUT bolt does do phone orders. I think you should come to Portland anyway!

Thanks so much, Jo!
KCWC Day 2: For special occasions
What started as a basic knit dress intended for lazy summer days has turned into something rather special and elegant. I used the FBST as my base pattern, added length to it and width at the bottom, like this. I also widened the neck and sliced the sleeves up the middle a bit and tied them. ...
Thanks, Jill!

Kelli, yes I just used regular bean bag fill beans which I bought locally. You could check Target or someplace like that. Good luck!
The Tea Leaves that almost wasn’t
I finished my beloved Tea Leaves cardigan last June, enjoyed wearing it for about two weeks, and then lost it! I was so sad. Fellow knitters, I know you will understand. It was the first clothing item I had ever knit for myself and I loved it so much—even with it’s uneven front button bands. I...
Jackie, are you referring to the designer of the fabric or the dress pattern? The dress is based loosely on the Flashback Skinny Tee by Rae Hoekstra. I modified it a lot to make my own pattern.

Thanks, Kristin. I used to forgo sleep but it made me too cranky. Good to find you too!

Kristin, Yes! I was at the sale on Friday and Sunday, so if you came in on one of those days I may have cut some fabric for you. :>) Please do say hi next time you're in.

Robin, thanks so much! It was great to see you at the store and I am looking forward to seeing/reading about more of your projects. See you soon, hopefully!

Sarah, Thanks so much! It is an awesome coat. Let me know when you do make one. I’d love to see it.
Let the Rains Begin
Thank you, Oliver + S, for making me a better seamstress. This coat was finished over the weekend, and just in time, too! It’s pouring outside and my muchkin is plenty cozy. And dry too, thanks to the water resistant canvas I used—which I ordered from here. It’s lined with a crossweave pima sh...
Thanks! I need reminding now and then that simple is often the best.
Something different today
I am guest blogging over at elsiemarley today as part of the pre-KCWC party. Check it out!
Susie, I removed the shirring in the back and left it long. Now I enjoy it several nights a week as a nightgown. :-)
More thoughts on knits and fits
So where were we? Oh yes, Built by Wendy 3692. Behold my second version of this pattern—this time as a dress and made in a size 10. I was pretty zealous in my last post about the fact that this is four sizes smaller than what the pattern measurements indicate should fit me. A little over zeal...
Thanks, Shelly! Such a great design.
Now I know why I'm getting so much traffic from Facebook. :-)
We love Sunki!
Even if we don’t like having our photo taken. The new Figgy’s patterns are brilliant. Completely brilliant. I ordered every one of them as soon I found out they were available. This pattern, the Sunki dress, is one I fell in love with right away. It did not disappoint. The design is ideal for ...
Simple and absolutely brilliant! Thank you.
PETITE PLUIE D'ÉTÉ
thank you to kathreen for inviting me to participate in her 2011 guest blogger series, and a big hello to those coming here from whip up! inspired by the blue of this linen and thoughts of summer, i designed this sweet linen skirt for my girl with the french name. seemed appropriate to g...
Gail, Thank you so much for your comment! That book is great I have used it a lot, as have many others in sewing-blog land. : > )
Red Linen Dress
It is so fortuitous that Mill End and Kinokuniya are right next to each other. Last week after an appointment in their neighborhood, I swung by both stores. At the fabric store I bought some beautiful red linen. It’s color is sort of tomato-ey red and it’s nubby and slightly heavy. And I walke...
Thanks, Katy! I have found chambray to be quite readily available. I got mine locally at Fabric Depot. I’m sure you could find some very nice chambray online. Try purlsoho or Denver Fabrics. Good luck!
Summer Sewing Round-up: Day One
This week I will catch up on posting about the rest of what I made this summer--mostly knits from the class I took in spring and a few other items. Today I give you my tulip skirt which I enjoyed wearing all summer. Jenny Gordy is such a great designer and I’m so glad she wrote and shared this...
Thanks, Carla. I love yellow and gray together!
KCWC Finale: Gray Pants
I think I love making little pants! The fabric I chose for these used to be a nice pair of J. Crew pants which I wore in my former (working) life. I re-worked the pattern quite a bit, especially the front pocket design and am much happier with it. These are a little bit short—maybe they wi...
Yeah—the cabbage yields such incredible blues. I left a couple eggs overnight in that dye and LOVED the result. I want to boil up some more and let some white or gray voile sit in it for a few days and see what happens. Thanks, as always for your kind comments!!
Easter Things
We did our eggs using natural dyes this year. I used this as my inspiration and loose guide. (Really missing that blog). The results thrilled me to no end! And it has got me super excited about this workshop I am taking next weekend. Moving along… Lauren got a soft bunny to snuggle. The pa...

Jen, I love Unique Melody too! and I think that will be the winner. I can't start it until I have finished a few other projects though. I’ve got about three different things on the needles right now!
It’s time I made myself a shawl
I am now in posession of two hanks of Pashmina. So luxurious! Now I need to decide which pattern to use. These are my top three: 1. Sugar is Sweet 2. Sugared Violets 3. Unique Melody What do you think?
