The robo calls drove me up a tree. I got as many as 6 a day from various candidates, and that's not counting the real person calls asking me to vote for their candidate or the polling calls asking me whom I planned to vote for. The calls were spread throughout the day but always interrupted something--meals, homework, bedtime rituals. On election day I got multiple phone calls from the McDonnell campaign, and by then I was so fed up I called his headquarters in Richmond to complain. The poor guy who answered got all flustered and said the calls were handled by an outside company. I reminded him that the McDonnell campaign was paying for these services, and wouldn't they rather spend the money on something that doesn't piss off the voters?
I hope to goodness the robo calls get banned.
My Ears are Ringing
My phone has been ringing off of the hook. Do I know some really sweet gossip? Did I do something astounding? Did my team win the Super Bowl? No. I've been insanely out of touch, only if you count quitting my old job as something astounding and none of the teams I root for are above .500. My p...
Thank you! I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. Ick.
Confessions of a Recovering Germaphobe
I’ve always been a bit of a neat freak, trying to keep the house organized, things properly filed in the filing cabinet, the kitchen scrubbed down with spotless floors, bathrooms without a stray hair or spots on the mirror. I’m far from a perfect housekeeper as evidenced by the lack of dusting...
Update: I wrote this post last Wednesday morning, then Wednesday evening took our youngest son (3 year old) to urgent care, where they diagnosed him with H1N1. Later we went to the ER when he spiked a high fever and had breathing problems. Our 5 year old came down with it a day later. Both boys are doing better now, thankfully. And of course this set me off on another cleaning binge.

Having a good OBGYN that you trust is so important and worth the extra drive. I loved my OBGYN and stuck with her through every pregnancy, even though it was a long drive because she and the rest of the doctors in the practice were wonderful.
I want a VBAC, please support me
My second child is due in about three and a half months and I want to have a VBAC, a vaginal birth after cesarean. My son was born two years ago via a necessary c-section because after meconium-laden-broken-water and hours of pitocin I never dilated beyond 2 centimeters and he never got into ...
We will definitely get the H1N1 vaccine for our family, have already got the regular flu vax for all of us. My cousin's two little boys ages 6 months and 4 yrs both contracted H1N1 in September. Both were pretty sick and the 6 month old responded well to Tamiflu, but the 4 year old had to be hospitalized--not just an ER visit--and kept for several days due to complications.
My Kid Got The Swine Flu Vax
(First off: I'm making it my personal mission to use the word "swine" in a blog post title every autumn, as evidenced by today's post and this one. I seek out the challenges in life, you know?) Today, my 3-year-old was vaccinated against both seasonal and H1N1 flu. It's unlikely that you, ge...
Holy tomato! We aren't canning sauce this year, just roasting and freezing the romas and San Marzanos. Got addicted to the flavor last year, now want them in everything.
The Eatsdropper will go blind doing that
While I'd absolutely love to present you with a lushly written and gorgeously photographed post on creating some mouth-watering treat today, our time is otherwise occupied. We are in the throes of our most ambitious kitchen masochism project to date. Whereas two years ago we and two friends proc...
It's this kind of stuff that makes me worry about our boys' teen years and makes me not want to give them cell phones. The Fairfax County Police hosted a public information session on sexting last week, something all the counties should do.
Worried About Your Teens Sexting? You Should Be.
If you have teens at home then you know that they now come with an attachment on one hand called a cell phone. With that cell phone, they can perform feats unimaginable to you and me like texting 100 words per minute using only their thumbs. Often, teens don’t actually talk on these cell phone...
I'm curious about the program. What kind of remediation plans are in place to assist those students who don't meet the early Keys?
When Graduating From High School Isn't Good Enough
Once upon a time, it was the goal of the public school system to educate students for twelve years and then send them off to a good college. The goal was to get students to a university somewhere—anywhere—where they’d end up with a degree that would hopefully get them a well-paying job. From t...

We've Been Here Before
"This is a meeting to determine if your son is eligible to receive special education services....." I've heard this before with our oldest son. That time I was nervous and unsure about the special needs process; this time I knew what to expect, but it felt more surreal. We started the process ...
I shed many tears as I read that article, tears for the suffering parents and their lost children.
Insurance, Guarantees, and Promises
I was at a first birthday celebration for my friend’s baby a couple of weeks back. It was a fun, casual atmosphere with children running around the house. The parents congregated in the kitchen to nibble and chat. Conversation wandered from schools, jobs and parenting issues to cheeses, ku...
Hi Robin, good question. The committee is required to state that they cannot medically diagnose a condition or recommend medications because they are not licensed medical professionals. All they can do is confirm that a child shows symptoms of a learning disability that interfere with the child's education and then take steps to help that child in the classroom.

The Business Plan of Happiness
I've never been one for timing. I graduated from college in the tech boom of the late '90s and immediately started to work my tail off in the San Francisco Bay Area...for peanuts as a federal government employee. I watched my fellow sorority sisters and classmates secure jobs at Cisco and I...
Oh my word, you told that story so well. I'm afraid I would not have had your level of patience!
Airport Security: Coke you drink? Don't even think about it. Coke you snort? No problem.
Not too long ago my friend told me about how she forgot the TSA rule prohibiting liquids from going through airport security and she had her soda confiscated at the x-ray machine. She told me the TSA agent was good-humored announcing,"We've got a Coke smuggler!" and everyone laughed. Last we...
