I usually write some really lame outline in the form of a chart. One column is headed for each chapter, the second column tells me where/who info, and the third column gives some brief detail. I only really fill things in if there is a great line that comes to me while I'm sketching things out. Maybe Warren's idea would work a little bit better - it allows plenty of space for additional details without inadvertently glancing down to see the notes for the next segment.
Thanks for sharing your excitement regarding your new project. It's really awesome that you are taking on a realm of writing which you yourself enjoyed reading so much as a kid. Have fun along the way, OK? And let us in on the details when you feel the time is right.

on a long run, on a long run
I've had this idea for a one-shot comic kicking around my head for close to a year. Until yesterday, I hadn't done anything with it. Yesterday, I wrote out a page-by-page breakdown for the story*. Today, I wrote the first five pages, and stopped when I ran out of gas a few hours later. I'll pic...
Love photo #2 - Watson looks just plain annoyed.
Yes, I believe Anne is in good 'paws' with the pets. Seems she will have no end of entertainment. :)
In which my wife is entertained by our pets, and I am amused.
Anne had minor ankle surgery last week, so she's been at home since Friday, recovering. Our pets are all incredibly excited that she's been a captive audience for them; both cats and both dogs have happily spent entire days on our bed with her. Yesterday, our cat Watson got himself all worked up...
Way cool, man. Anne is something really special. Creative and thoughtful, and willing to put in all the time & effort to make your birthday so very special. So neat. I'm really impressed with the two of you. :)
This is a real thing that happened.
I'm still processing the whole thing, through a mind that was recently completely blown, but I have to show you a picture, Internet: Anne gave me a surprise party for my 40th birthday. She spent a year planning it, and gathered 165 of my friends -- from around the world -- into one room to cel...

Hey Wil, just writing to wish you the greatest of all days today - which is how it should be for your birthday and Don't Be a Dick Day!!
Happy Don't Be A Dick Day!
When I gave my 2007 PAX Prime Keynote, I said Arcades were more than just magnificent geek Shangri-Las, filled with all sorts of video games and pinball machines. They were a vital part of my generation’s social development. If I beat another kid in a two player game and taunted him mercilessly...

After twenty years, I finally got to say this.
A lot of incredible and wonderful things happened at the Calgary Expo this weekend, and when I'm not as exhausted I'll write about all of them. Until then, though, here is one of them that I really hope you'll spend 5 minutes watching: If you can't see the video, you can watch it right here a...

Things every person should have
Things every person should have: A nemesis. An evil twin. A secret headquarters. An escape hatch. A partner in crime. A secret identity. What else?

Pure awesome.
In which I am a proud father (this is not a repost)
My son, Ryan, graduated college with a creative writing degree this past December. He got a job immediately after school, and moved all the way across the country to work there. I miss him every single day, but I'm incredibly proud of him, and the work he's doing. Earlier today, I read something...
I want an Alien for Christmas
Bring me an Alien this year
I want a little green guy about three feet high
with 17 eyes and he knows how to fly ...
Oops, sorry about that. I'm just jealous.
Sounds like you had a great time, Wil. I especially loved the clip from Paul & Storm. (I concur mightily).
Glad to have you back.
The boat is still moving, even though I am not on it. But there was music when I was on the boat.
I've gotten much worse at writing relevant titles since an hour ago. Oh well, circle of life.* Previously, on Battlestar Galactica my blog: Holland America goes to this private island in the Bahamas that is everything you'd expect from a private beach in the Caribbean, if you were expecting a ...
Love it - you win!
:)
I still don't know very much about brain scans...
Here are three Star Trek-themed things that have come up recently. All of them made me laugh so hard I pooped a little, so they need to be preserved here for the ages. First, from Jimmy James, Inc: For the record, Wesley's dance crew was called Jiffy and da Popz. Next: Last night, Paul of Pa...
Wholeheartedly agreed!
it's a festivus miracle
If you can't watch the embedded clip, you can see it here. You can see the whole thing on the Nerdist Holiday special, Christmas Eve on BBC America.

Wait ... what happened to Bob? Was he a no-show?
(as in Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice)
So ... you were ... sleepless in Seattle???
Sorry, couldn't help myself. Congratulations on the sell-out. (of tickets, I mean. duh.)
Damn machines, taking control ... who do they think they are, restricting you to Ensign?
Oh, and by the way, ... naps happen, man.
So for thinking that you had nothing to contribute writing-wise, I think that was a hell of a post. Thanks for sharing. :)

title of the blog post
When I was reading back through my archives in preparation for Wil Wheaton versus Paul and Storm last week, I thought, more than once, "I really need to write more." Each time, though, my calendar grabbed focus and shouted at me like Jules in Pulp Fiction until I begged it to stop. I miss writin...

Best of luck with the fundraising, guys - and have a blast at the Wiggle Waggle Walk!

puppy love and the wiggle waggle walk
This is our dog, Seamus: Seamus is in our lives because of people like you, who read my blog and supported Anne and me when we decided to celebrate the memory of our awesome dog, Ferris, and did the Wiggle Waggle Walk for the Pasadena Humane Society in 2009. Anne wrote: Just over 8 years ag...

Anne is a genius.
The only thing I might suggest adding - a game room for RPGs. You know, the kind that takes up the entire attic space. Jukebox with 70s music, bar food, arcade machines, and Wheaton's Own. I could get lost in a place like that.
I love a good roadtrip to CA. Leavin' on a jetplane ...
OK, OK, back to reality (but really, do I hafta?) :D

The Poet and the Painter casting shadows on the water
Beer stuff! I wanted to make Jaime Paglia an oatmeal stout, because that's his favorite. When I went to the shop to get supplies, though, Greg (who owns it) told me that you really have to do a partial mash or all-grain to get it just right. I'm not quite ready for that, yet, so I went with my b...
DUDE!!! This is *so* my generation.
In 2044, I'd be one of the remaining DD fans. :)
Wil, I am excited for you that you were able to give voice to this project; the sample you provided really piqued my interest in the book. I may buy my first ever audiobook.
Congrats on this MASSIVE win!!!
You want to accept Anorak’s Invitation. Trust me.
I love narrating audiobooks, because it gives me a rare opportunity to combine my love of reading with my love of performing into something that hopefully entertains people, and gets the Bursar at Ryan's college off my back for another month. I did a few when I was much younger (Huck Finn, Tom S...

Well said. And with the continuing rising costs of cable TV these days, it's enough to consider disconnecting from broadcast television altogether and wait for the DVDs.
Yeah, that'll teach 'em. *snicker*
Saying goodbye to Eureka
Last year, my friend Amy told me she was moving from writing Leverage to writing Eureka. She asked me if I was interested in playing a scientist who was kind of a jerk. I said "yes" as fast as I could, and ended up playing Doctor Isaac Parrish for seven of the ten episodes in season 4.5. When se...
In discussing my days off with my boss (for GenCon), she said ... "Why do I know that name ???" I gave several examples of your work, to which every time she said no, not it. Then you could almost see the light bulb: "He was in that show on TV, the geek one ..." "Big Bang Theory?" "YEAH, that's it!"
Your appearance on a seldom watched (by my boss) TV show has made you infamous to her now ...

being a geek is about having a great community
In a couple hours, I'm heading down to San Diego for the craziest, most exhausting, most awesome four days of the year: Comicon. Earlier this morning, Felicia and I were Google Plussing about how to survive the con. I'm assuming some of you are not among the eleventy billion people who have the ...
