Sean Hayes has a lovely song on his Run Wolves Run album in which the last line is just that "there is enough for everyone". So elemental and yet so easily lost. Thanks for helping us find it again~

Beautiful baby!!! Stinky or not ;) FWIW, I didn't really bathe my girls much...ever. Lots of sponge baths for babe #2 who hated the tub until about 3 months ago...and is now almost 3 years old :) Opportunistic diaper changes & sponging were the norm!!

We have returned from our weeks long trip to Oregon! We have landed big sister back into school and are now trying to gather the pieces of life left strewn in our wake and get some routines going again. I look forward to this settling in and, though we're hovering near 100 degree days right now, a turn toward the home and its warmth and remembrance. More from our trip and our summer coming soon! A few nights ago we got to go out to a movie! Just Papa and I together. It was lovely and he even brought me flowers. And, even better, our lovely friend Anise came over to spend time with baby girl and took this lovely lot of photos. It was so inspiring and sweet to see our life through the eyes of another. Like a sweet, gentle hug. Thank you for this and for the time away from all this sweetness~ Hello Deer visits Sweet Bug Farm Continue reading

I just dove into a large offering of Panne Cotta and I have to say, Ms. Garten, that this was really easy (mix two, heat three, add bean seeds and mix all together) but it tastes just like the Brown Cow Vanilla Yogurt with cream on top which I buy at Whole Foods for the girls. Is it me or should it taste like fancy yogurt? And now that I have about 2 quarts of the stuff, who is going to come over and help us eat it?!! The real trouble here is that I think the Panne Cotta has... Continue reading

A few weeks ago, we had some nice friends and neighbors over for a little get together. I've mentioned already the oysters, the beer and the pizza. For my next trick, I will show you the kale chips. And what I have learned. Choosing the freshest of kale is always best, but if you don't have access to kale in your front yard, find some nice quality stuff at the store. My mantra is local-is-better, so better yet, find some at the farmers market. Maybe it will still have the secret ingredient in it, too. Only you will know! Unlike... Continue reading

This is amazing. I've made several of the bags with ziploc but they are too time consuming for the amount of actual-use-time-before-they-are-lost. Thank you thank you for cracking the code on this. One step closer to less plastic!!

I love pizza. The kids love pizza. EVEN my DH loves pizza. When I first saw this recipe I was resting in the bathroom at my parents house, reading what was then a newer issue of Bon Appetit. I clipped the pages showing Giada in all her glory~pizza, dough, chocolate pizza, and more. You get the picture. (And if not, just take a look at the covers of her cookbooks!) Fast forward several years later. Hungry kids, VERY hot day, barbeque sending out missives of sadness and woe over not being used. Enter Giada. And her pizza dough~among other things.... This weekend we decided to tackle a bit of window installation. We have been planning this for months and have been waylaid by rain, rain, more rain and finally the busy of summer. This weekend went by fairly unprovoked, with Papa getting on the well side of strep throat but not much else. There were several things standing in the way of the actual project as well, not the least of which neither of us has ever installed a window *nor seen it done*. To further the troubles, we had a lot of information on the internets available, but that... Continue reading

Is that the Giant Wheel in one of the photos? We just had that at our fair and it was REALLY fun! We just missed getting to see the nightly fireworks while on the wheel, but that ride lasts 13 minutes. Too much wheel for me!

Wishing you more days of cold toes and deep breaths. Keep finding the happiness and keep loving those you love. At the end of the tough spots, those two things will still be there.

As the summer speeds by, we are celebrating many happy occasions. Birthdays, graduations and two happy anniversaries. My mom and dad got married now 21 years ago. It was a first marriage for neither of them. My (step)mom had a long and lovely marriage to her first husband Gary and sadly outlived him. Happily for us, though, she met my dad and despite many reasons not to, they tied the knot. I still remember my dad asking me if he could marry Mary~it would be his third~and I replied "It's either going to be 3 strikes and you're out or... Continue reading

We are enjoying "Mom & Dad's Anniversary Green Bean Salad" which I blog about here: www.sugarandpepper.com And although others may have mentioned them, some easy favorites which cook well in the morning and wait for dinnertime to arrive are: *swiss chard with bacon: then with eggs/pasta/pizza topping *pizza dough~done on the BBQ. I know you've recently done pizza, but on the BBQ I can't remember? *ribs! they are cheap and easy. I just put ours on the BBQ for about 10 minutes each side, using a simple sprinkle of some spices (I can't remember what, but if you find some recipes for sauces just use the spices). I thought you had to do ribs as an all day multiple cooking steps use all the dishes in the kitchen type of thing but it turns out they are very simple. *beets: I puree them and make a crepe-ish pancake via Good to the Grain and fix them like burritos for dinner with sour cream and any number of toppings. Happy summer! *wanted also to thank you for the cuisinart accessory unlove. I find that there are so many things out there to buy that I think I need to have...and what I end up using are the very simplest of tools and so many gadgets end up collecting dust in a drawer somewhere....

When it feels like we are living anywhere but California. After almost 10 years of living here, it still doesn't feel like home to me. I love some of the people some of the time, many of the places most of the time and hate the traffic all the time. The view from our back door is so pleasing and calming and so very NOT California, however. It is soothing and calm, relaxing and invigorating. It is the result of hard work done and hard work to come. Perhaps that is the work of life: To make wherever you live... Continue reading

Upon entering our 4 chickens at the fair on Thursday, we were asked if big sister wanted to also sign up for Poultry Showmanship. We gamely (ha, ha) signed her up and then she attended a Novice Showmanship workshop so she could learn all sorts of pencil guiding techniques to get her favorite chicken to abide by the rules. She is so brave! There were 12 kids in the Showmanship ring and big sister was one of only 4 who weren't involved in 4-H. Which meant for her, personally, that she had never spent any time with her chicken other... Continue reading
