Jason, I understand, and agree with, your comment that some of them were merely exercises, and also with your wondering whether, as such, some should have been included. My guess is that the programmers want to have a full-blown multi-day festival but PEI doesn't really have the content/talent base to justify a full-blown multi-day festival.
I think the next step PEIsland film-makers need is to be subjected to constructive commentary and criticism. I don't think it's enough, now, to be lauded simply for having something finished. I think content/talent needs to be addressed more.
7 Word Reviews of IMAF2011 Videos Seen
So, for a while now, I've been thinking about writing up some 7-word reviews (that's kind of become my thing - 7 word reviews. Well, one of my things) of the videos I saw at this year's Island Media Arts Festival. Wanted to do it right after the screenings, to keep it fresh. Then I didn't do i...
Fermat's Last Theorum
I am a sucker for a good math story. I don't particularly like math, and am not particularly good at math, but I enjoy the world of math. This is a fantastic documentary about a man trying to prove (or disprove) Fermat's Last Theorum. Before watching this video, I had no idea who or what Fermat was, or his theorum. You don't need to know what these math guys are necessarily talking about. The documentary does a great job of finding the drama within the story, so that the actual math is rather irrelevant. Take a watch. If you make... Continue reading

Highway Robbery
From The Guardian: Letting the private sector own and operate a new seniors home in Charlottetown is nothing short of highway robbery, says Prince Edward Island’s largest public sector union. "And, believe me, we know a thing or two about highway robbery," added the union. Continue reading

Hey CBC - who had the weapon?
Here's the first sentence from a story from yesterday's CBC page: A 41-year-old man from Charlottetown, P.E.I., was sentenced to six years in prison for sexually assaulting a 19-year-old man with a weapon. First question: Which man had the weapon - the 41 year-old or the 19 year-old? Second question: Did the 41-year old actually use the weapon in the act of the sexual assault? Third question: How are things? If you want to read the article, you can click this: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/prince-edward-island/story/2010/03/12/pei-williston-sentencing-584.html?ref=rss#ixzz0i4CbDQdt Continue reading

Wandering Cows Beware - Stray Livestock Act
Is this intentional? Guardian article about changes to the Stray Livestock Act. Here's the accompanying photo. And the first line of the article is "Wandering cows beware." ??? Is this some sort of sad attempt at a photo/verbiage joke? I don't mean to imply that the women in the picture are cow-ish, but come on. What does the photo have to do with the issue, other than they're all going in to the Legislature to debate the issue? Continue reading

Sit Ubu Sit. On My Face
I don't really know how this post's title refers to the topic. You don't have to be a lesbian to either a) ask to have your face sat upon, or b) to sit upon a face. It was either "Sit Ubu Sit. On My Face" or "Sha La La Lesbian". Either way, Elyse Keaton is a lesbian. I'm sure Steven must have known. Alex P isn't gay, and neither is Mallory, I'm guessing (but she undoubtedly experimented during her college years. Yes, Mallory went to college!) But what about Jennifer? I'd bet good money that Tina Yothers takes after her... Continue reading

Mommy, Why Is That Man's Tongue In That Other Man's Mouth?
I'm not really a fan of Adam Lambert's music*, but I think I'm a fan of him. There's been a controversy surrounding him since his appearance at the American Music Awards last weekend, where he performed sexually-suggested moves and (gasp) kissed a male band-mate. His appearance the next day (or a couple days later?) on Good Morning America was cancelled. Both AMA and GMA are ABC network shows. Anyway, here's a pretty thoughtful and matter-of-fact explanation from him, from his appearance on CBS' The Early Show. *to be fair, I haven't really listened to much of it. Continue reading

If I Could Do That, I'd Never Leave My House!

Plus, It'll Make A Great Second Book!
Ex-NHL player Theo Fleury ready to pursue charges against Graham James, says report. That's an article in The Journal Pioneer. You know, it's tragic, and all that, when people get abused or abuse things. Even famous people. But it'd be nice if, every once in a while, the truth about the abuse didn't come out to co-incide with a book tour. Continue reading

Vulnerable Intersection Seeks SUV
Doesn't this picture look like the type of picture you take by extending your arm, camera in hand, and snapping? Did Mitch take this himself? The photo is taken from this article from the online version of The Guardian (which covers the Island like the "your bill is past due"). So is this quote: It’s a very precarious, vulnerable and dangerous intersection,” Mitchell Tweel said of the Pond Street and Queen Street intersection. Awesome adjectives to describe the intersection! I've crossed that intersection many times. I know, for a fact, that it is also a very lonely, obtuse and reserved... Continue reading

When They Came For The Vaccine, I Said Nothing...
According to this article from the online version of The Guardian (which covers the Island like the Dewey decimal system), THEY will be distributing arm bands to make swine flu vaccination lines easier to manage. That's all fine and good. Or so I thought. Turns out this is what the arm bands will look like: Anybody else concerned about this? Is J.J. Steinfeld still in town? Continue reading

Alberton Mayor-Elect looks Awesome!!!
From The Guardian (the paper that covers The Island like the dew, except it's a dew that puts black ink on your fingers) comes this photo of Michael Murphy, who won* the Alberton Mayoral race by two votes. *pending a recount This is, without question, the most awesome looking mayor I can imagin...

Your Voice Isn't As Good With Makeup On
Yeah, so I'm late to the Sarah Boyle thing. You know, the ugly woman who can sing. In case you're even more late than me, here's a picture of her. It's true. She's beyond ugly. In all honesty, I haven't seen the video clip of her singing, and now it's my goal to never see it. Just like E.T...
Peter, I am fearful of her too. I respect the fear, and I respect Darlene. Is there a harder working, more enterprising person in town?
Darlene the Coat-Hanger Lady
There's a collection of 3 foamy snowmen displayed in the Confederation Court Mall in Charlottetown. It was pointed out to me yesterday that one of them looks eerily like Darlene, the Coat Hanger Lady. Today I took my camera to work to snap a picture at lunch. Here it is. and from a bit fart...

Ein Zwein Die
In the PS3 Call of Duty game that my son is all into right now, there's a level you unlock after reaching certain goals: it allows you the chance to fight German soldiers who happen to be zombies. I gotta admit, it's pretty fun to shoot Nazi zombies. Cameron very much enjoys it. So, when I sho...

Pledge of Arbitrary Allegiance
It's stupid, really. 20+ some odd years ago, I became interested in NFL football. Because Dan Marino was a young phenom at the time, his rookie season, I decided to root for the Miami Dolphins. Really, for no other reason than Dan Marino looked like a great qb and the Dolphins looked like they ...

Well, our first show of the summer is finished. What a relief. The house was pretty much full, the crowd was ready for a show, and they got one. It felt really good to hear laughter at the places where we were hoping laughter would occur. It felt really good to hear gasps at the places we th...
