Aw! Lump in the throat caused by my soppy mum 'n dad... And 'Owl Right Now' is a pun so bad that I really wish I'd thought of it first!
Owl Right Now
Hello everyone! For the first time in more than a year (ie before Maisie) I got into my craft room and did some needle felting! Oh, it was so good. It was helped by the fact that Number One Son and Daughter-in-Law gave me a DAB radio for my very own - for use in the craft room - because it is T...
Only just saw this lovely post... Can't wait to show this to my lovely wife the aforementioned PM-designate.
Beautiful Bargello
Hello! It was my birthday yesterday - yes, I am one of those people who brings the sun back to the sky after the longest night. I would probably have been revered as a shaman - or burnt as a witch- a couple of thousand years ago. Anyway, I got lots of lovely presents, including one from someo...
Jess will be home from school in the next 10 minutes or so and I am going to show her this post. I suspect the response from your other grandchild will be to get wildly excited about next week's visit. Maisie is veeeeeeery cute...
Jack-a-Doodle, dandy!
Helloooo! I am over-excited and ever-so-slightly tired , because this adorable little person entered our household on Sunday afternoon. She is a Jack-a-Doodle - her mum is a smooth-haired tan coloured Jack Russell and her dad is a black Toy Poodle. My ever-so-talented (and Slightly Devious) dau...
It really was a splendid day; ten very fine towels presented to the Universe for its delight and delectation, Brockian Ultra Cricket... excitement, adventure and really wild things.
Once again, it's marvellous to have a family so dedicated to working very hard at the higher pursuit of Being Very Silly.
Infinitely Improbable Goings-On
You know I said a couple of weeks ago that I'd been busy with the crochet hook but couldn't tell you about it because it was Top Secret? Well, here it is - an Infinite Improbability Towel! What??? you may well cry. It is all about The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and the fact that our fam...
Yes. Awesome is an over used word. This however would be a case of 'awesome' in the proper dictionary definition sense of 'something that inspires awe' rather than in the more oft misused sense of 'oh, that's quite good'.
On the Track of the Giant Scorpion
Hello y'all. Today we went on a fabulous walk in beautiful sunshine along part of the Fife Coastal Path to find the fossilized tracks of the Hibberopterus. We've been doing a Geology class since the beginning of this academic year, and our lovely lecturer, Ros, is also a founder member of GeoH...
So glad you enjoyed the Baroque Cycle. It comprises some of the most engaging, intelligent and entertaining books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. His latest 'Reamde' is apparently wonderful too - it is sitting in the 'to read' pile next to my bed. I have the audio book of 'Zodiac' but haven't started it yet, so I can't tell you what that one is like. 'Anathem' is brilliant, but of course you've already read that one. 'Snow Crash' is an early work and is a genre cyber-punk sci fi novel. It's good, and very witty. Reads a bit like Michael Marshall Smith with more computer know-how, and some very cool ideas about pizza delivery.
What Shall I Do?
Help! I've finished "The Baroque Cycle"! This 3-volume cornucopia of wit, history, swash-buckling adventure and bawdiness by Neal Stephenson was given to me for my Birthday. As you can see, it was also a superior set of special edition, slip-cased and signed by the author books. Not so much bed...
It really was a very splendid weekend.
I would happily go back to Norway. The topography is breathtaking, the people are friendly, the architecture is charming, the trains are nice, everything runs on time... if only the booze weren't so darned expensive, theer'd be a fine case for emigration!
Following our return, Bananagrams has become a staple favourite game, we have become increasingly aware of the fact that our log burner is nowhere near as good as the one we had in our little log cabin and we only use the insult 'husky bum' very sparingly... we now know firsthand how mean an insult that really is!
Goodness knows what they were fed on, but that smell... eurgh!
I am delighted that you enjoyed it as much as you did. Thank you for letting us share in your Christmas Present with you!
xx
A Little Ice Music
So, our Norwegian weekend. We flew in to Oslo, where we had a couple of hours to wander about and admire the architecture, the blue skies, the buskers playing the most beaten-up hammer dulcimer I've ever seen and the cold! Brrrr. We were still dressed in British winter clothes, so high- tailed ...
It was great to have you two over too - glad you had a nice time! Just to let you know, in a mystery worth of Poirit or Marple, your abortive first effort at Christmas cake, which was basically a highly edible collapsed fruit cake, appears to have vanished without trace.
Given the fact that I am on a diet it is Impossible That I Ate It.
It is also, therefore, Impossible That I Know It Was Lovely.
But it was.
Thank you.
Wild Wood
Good Grief! Where has the time gone? I've been mega-busy, but don't seem to have achieved much - perhaps I've stuck my finger into too many pies and need to Step Away from some of them. Anyway, we were away last week. Firstly and most enjoyably visiting Number One Son and his Lovely Wife, where ...

I have just been reading Neal Stephenson's wonderful Baroque Cycle.
One of the many, many storylines in this sprawling epic involves a boat that makes many long and arduous journeys, including one in which its hull is temporarily coated in gold (reputedly the gold of Solomon himself) as a way of smuggling it past various pirates and ne'er do wells.
The boat in question is a fine vessel called the 'Minerva'. Would this not be a fitting appellation for the sturdy vessel you have pictured?
The Creel Thing
Hello again. I'm afraid I have been seriously side-tracked by Doll's House Stuff this past couple of weeks. If you remember, back when I first tried needle-felting, I made some twelfth-scale dogs for my doll's house and others. So you already know that I'm slightly daft, and spend my time in wor...
