These are not good people. They do not mean well.
So much that. But it's the brazenness of it that's astounding, and the people who defend these not good people.

Razib Khan reviews Charles Murray’s Facing Reality: Comfortable white people—“nice white parents” in affluent neighbourhoods who support efforts to “defund the police”—can refuse to look into the data or insist that those data are the product of racist systems and structures. They can “interrog...
Neurodivergent
For thinking that my love could hold you
I'm neurodivergent for trying
And neurodivergent for crying
And I'm neurodivergent for loving you

I wonder what about her might account for the confusion?
It may have less to do with physical reality then in the whole 1984 five fingers thing. In that context, their beard is a plus, not a minus.

Dr Cremin deserves to be greeted by a politely smoothened yawn. No, I don't think that would work (he'd just go further to make it all about him) but it is what he deserves.

For newcomers and the nostalgic, more items from the archives: Imagine The Picnics. Emily Zak wants us to know that fresh air and countryside are, like everything else, terribly oppressive. Naturally, Ms Zak has an extensive, at times bewildering list of excuses for why any outdoors recreation ...
I contend that it does not accurately describe the senior organizers, the funders, and the politicians and "human rights activist" who protect them.
The people protecting them are worse, because they're the successful sociopaths, the ones who present as normal and have a long term plan. They'll stomp down on their stormtroopers when they are no longer useful, and have popular support to do so, when they're no longer useful. I doubt the protectors and funders will ever be brought to mortal justice.

Maths teacher Paul Rossi shares his experience of “anti-racism training” at a Manhattan high school, during which he questioned the alleged imperative to foreground each student’s racial identity, and questioned the value of racialising human attributes – including the claim that “objectivity” i...
I once read a SF story where one of the background features was no fault crime, where the criminal and the victim were both held equally accountable. That was, of course, naive. The guilt will be assigned based on social justice points, where the victim who defends himself will be the most guilty of all since he is keeping the predators from what is rightfully theirs.
Setting An Example, You See
Via pst314 in the comments, a tale of crime and punishment. Well, crime, anyway: A man who was carjacked at gunpoint while he shovelled out a parking space in [West Town, Chicago] on Tuesday night is refusing to press charges in the case, according to Chicago police. The victim “felt sorry for ...

From the archives, one of my favourites. Alex Gorosh and Wylie Overstreet’s short film about the Moon - and what can sometimes happen when people stop to look at it. Seemed oddly appropriate. If you haven’t seen it before, enjoy. As is the custom here, posting will be intermittent over the h...
Under a non-capitalistic society, nobody would do what they do.
It wasn't real socialism; they had people regulating the bread line.
When The Lady On The Checkout Is Your Class Enemy
From the Socialism 101 Reddit, a question of crushing import: Are cashiers working class? I know this sounds like it should be obvious, but think about it. Cashiers do not produce any commodities. Under a non-capitalistic society, nobody would do what they do. In fact, their job is almost more...
Don't the trees have enough problems without some yahoo coming along and burdening the trees with his own problems? Why is it the tree's role to listen to anyone whine?
Barking
We’ve neglected the arts of late. That simply won’t do: “Trees are like human beings,” says the performance artist Marina Abramovic. “They have intelligence. They have feelings. They communicate with each other. And also, they are perfectly silent listeners. You can complain to them.” And lettin...
How can we achieve justice for the victims of systemic discrimination as a class if you insisted on defending yourself as an individual rather than excepting your guilt as a member of a class? Real self defense occurs when victims of systemic racism take what is rightfully theirs. Check your privilege!
I Was Only Going To Stab You
Heather Mac Donald on the new woke rules: Sunday’s anti-cop riots in Lancaster, Pa., have made the current de facto rules of engagement clear: Officers may never defend themselves against lethal force if their attacker is a minority. They should simply accept being shot or stabbed as penance for...

even something as simple as an icebreaker asking people what the “most fun thing you’ve done with your family during quarantine” could be a microaggression.
Why yes, anything can be a microaggression and that seems to be the point. Asking "How are you?" can be a microaggression, since that marginalizes people who aren't doing at all well, which is ableism.

A Bold Use Of Talc
We have of late been neglecting the arts, and that simply won’t do. By way of correction, here’s another chance to behold the feats of the Austrian choreographer and performance artist Ms Doris Uhlich, filmed earlier this year at Vienna’s Rabenhof Theatre. The video of Ms Uhlich’s performance – ...
The vast majority of people worldwide, as well as millions in the UK, do not have their needs met
Wow, what kind of third world pest-hole are you guys running if "millions in the UK do not have their needs met"? They must be starving in the streets and lining up to leave. Why, the flood of refugees from the UK must be overwhelming Europe. Oh, wait, none of that's happening and that claim about "millions in the UK" must be fresh off of the San Francisco sidewalk.
This seems to be a combination of make believe solidarity with the less fortunate and a kind of fantasy distopia the writer dreams of. The question of what needs are not being met and how to meet them is neglected in favor of considering how to replace the writers fantasy distopia with a swinging, upbeat distopia with dancing.
Apocalypse Averted With Collective Juddering
The vast majority of people worldwide, as well as millions in the UK, do not have their needs met – let alone live lives of luxury from which air travel and weekly shopping sprees could be painlessly stripped out and replaced for example with dance lessons. Why, yes, I am reading the Guardian. ...

principles of non-hierarchical organisation
This almost seems like a contradiction in terms. Some people are going to end up in charge no matter how "non-hierarchical" they claim to be.

On being put on a diet by her parents:
having my food consumption policed meant i developed creative and adaptive ways to continue being able to eat the foods my body wanted to be able to eat
OK, being forced to go on a diet by her parents probably did suck and was foredoomed to failure, but I find the phrasing interesting here: "to eat the foods my body wanted to be able to eat". She was just following her body's orders, folks.
Think Big, Badly
In the comments, Mr Muldoon steers us to this item of possible interest: As the fat-positivity movement has gained momentum, so, too, have debates around how fat folks should lead healthy lives. [Sonalee] Rashatwar, though, considers how sizeism is affected by racism, misogyny, classism, homopho...

Did You Pack The Jar Of Testicles?
Would a future women-only space colony have to live with that same fear? Would the very idea of a self-sufficient community of women so infuriate and threaten men that they would take it as a challenge to seek out and invade any feminist planet? And what about the frozen sperm? I’m sorry. I’m re...
Whether, in a matriarchal society without examples of male aggression, those boys would grow up to be the kind of man who grabs a peaceful protester by the back of her neck remains one of the great unknowns.
Because boys growing up in homes without fathers always turn out to be so peaceful.

Here’s an idea! Change your parents’ bad voting habits by refusing to breed. In the pages of Slate, Christina Cauterucci, whose enthusiasms include “gender and feminism,” wishes to share her wisdom: The prospect of harnessing one’s sexual and reproductive powers for social good is a tempting one...
