I made this for lunch today. Jealous? I've been lucky enough to do a bit of traveling over the past couple of months, and have been struck by the differences in the definition of "summer" wherever I go. In northwest... Continue reading

Image courtesy of Yahoo! Embellished by yours truly. This is the opener for a series of posts that I've been thinking about for quite some time. Words and food are never a bad combo, neh? I can't believe the synchronicity... Continue reading

No, I'm not a DragonRider. Actually, I wouldn't tell you if I were - girls never reveal such things. No, the "pie" in the headline refers to "pizza pie," more specifically, the kind of pizza pie that my buddy Jeffy... Continue reading

Today just happens to be the 2nd anniversary of the day I had major surgery for cancer. Rather than wallowing in introspection, I chose to honor the occasion with a date with a machine, pounding the shit out of fuzzy... Continue reading

It's true, and atypical for me: Rumournation has lain fallow, in the middle of an election year. Usually full of rant, bluster and venting, this little space in the middle of cyberspace has been empty, no longer a waystation for... Continue reading

Three short days ago, Advertising Age ran a column titled "Why The Hunger Games Won't Make $100 Million Its Opening Weekend." The article was right -- the movie pulled in $155M through Saturday, and is still racking up the box office numbers. Oops. Controversial headlines and contrary opinions are the... Continue reading

The NFL is the world's most valuable sports franchise, so they are understandably being cautious when it comes to making a commitment to 3D. But don't give up hope! Maybe in 2013.

A few weeks ago, my buddy Jeffy showed up for the holiday we call "Bah, Humbug! Day," with a heavy, beautifully-wrapped package from Vroman's. (If you don't know Vroman's, you're not a book lover. If you're ever in Pasadena, go... Continue reading

Three years ago, on a totally different blog, I predicted that we’d soon be watching Michael Phelps work his watery magic in 3D. And now, here we are. This week at CES, Panasonic announced that the company would be helping power the broadcast of the 2012 London Summer Olympics in... Continue reading

Japanese company Newsight has announced that they will begin selling a glasses-free 3D overlay for the iPad in July. The overlay uses parallax barrier technology similar to that used in the Nintendo 3DS and on upcoming 3D smartphones. Newsight is also releasing apps and SDK's for developers to show off... Over the past couple of weeks, it’s become fashionable for western entertainment media and analysts to bash 3D movies. I keep waiting for the writer or analyst interested in taking a longer-term view of the format and what it bodes, but so far, none have emerged. So, I’m going to... Continue reading

While last week's hype would lead us to believe that movies are the sole market movers when it comes to 3D, there's another, bigger game afoot (pun intended), and it's happening just down the street. The annual E3 Expo in LA showcases the biggest, brightest and newest in videogame technology,... Continue reading

While the newswires and Interwebs are abuzz with speculation and lurid headlines regarding whether 3D movies are dead, there's a flanking move happening out in left field that's putting 3D media right into consumers' hands. Sprint announced today that they've locked in some interesting 3D content deals for their launch... Continue reading

Thanks for chiming in. Perhaps Pirates is a bad movie -- I'll leave that up to each audience member to decide. But that just reinforces one of my points: that there are many factors that determine box office. And it doesn't detract from the main issue: that movie production and release strategy can no longer exclusively be determined by the U.S. box office, despite Mr. Greenfield's recommendation to do just that.

Mark Twain certainly knew how to craft a zinger. Google "Mark Twain quotes" and you'll be rewarded with 732 good ones. Too bad he preceded the talk show era -- he might have been bigger than Oprah. Definitely on par with Howard Stern, for sure. BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield is... Continue reading

In today's 3D news, Sony is hoping to kickstart its huge investment in 3D with consumers by launching a contest called "Your Life in Sony 3D," inviting them to submit ideas that can potentially be turned into a professionally-shot 3D video to be aired on 3net and in Times Square.... In today's 3D news, Fast Company put Discovery Networks on its 2011 list of Ten Most Innovative Media Companies, in part for its partnership with Sony and IMAX to build the world's first (sic) 3D TV network (actually, BSkyB owns that honor, but we won't quibble with innovation). TV Technology... Continue reading

Werner Herzog, the auteur director, is known for following his own unique vision, wherever it may take him. This time, he's followed his vision in 3D, shooting a documentary on the Chauvet Cave in France, which is home to home to humankind's most ancient expressions of visual art. Using the... The Royal Wedding got the 3D treatment, after all, despite getting a royal "no" on shooting inside Westminster Abbey -- Sky positioned four cameras outside the Abbey to capture footage, and will edit it into a short movie that will be shown on Monday. Google Maps, as well as CNN... Continue reading
