Lately every time I get on Facebook I'm dreading it even as I click the link to open the page. Often as my newsfeed is loading, I feel my own internal anxiety loading alongside it. There's so much heaviness in the news, so much violence in our cities, and way too much division and bitterness in our online interactions. While the earth rages on the gasoline of racism and extremism, natural disaster and war, it feels like even the church is ripping open from the inside, distracted and divided with a hatred all its own, as all the while Facebook proves itself the prime location for safely detached consumption of what looms like a global train wreck. Feels like I'm often left sitting in a jagged, achy itch somewhere between cortisol and true grief, with a mounting internal pressure to "just do something, even if it's wrong," as my dad used to say. Yeah... I think, too, of how he hides himself so often. Why doesn't he just clearly display his name and glory? Speak out of the sky? Speak audibly to us? Or write his words on a wall like he did with what's-his-butt, Nebudchanezzar, or whichever O.T. king that was? (Which reminds me of the Pharisees demanding signs and miracles and absolute, touchable wonders so "they'll believe.") But it's in the seeking and discovering that our faith is built brick by brick. There's a post of mine from a long time ago on here, one of my favorites, called "Peekaboo God" that relates to all this, too. "Seek what's hidden." One of my favorite mantras and deepest convictions. If you seek him with all your heart, you will find him. But you have to seek. He doesn't just hand himself over like some kind of tacky trinket or cheap date. There's a reason we've got so many fairytales and ancient stories about hidden treasure, eh?

I found myself mesmerized by the sparkling gold plates at the front of the room where the bread and cup were being served. The thirsty are invited to the table of Christ..... and offered what? Blood. They're offered blood to quench their thirst. And "skin," as my son used to call the bread and body of Christ when he was a toddler. Continue reading

I think my final meditations on my time in Dallas have simply to do with prayer and the Spirit. This trip for me was like one big fat personal spiritual retreat; even though I was often surrounded by people, and brought home some beautiful new friends out of it, overall... Continue reading

Lessons #6 and 7... #6: Songwriting. I was convicted to really put my hand to the plow with songwriting. I feel an ease with words in general and, when I really apply myself, feel like I can produce something decent. If I'm lazy, maybe not so much. With songwriting, it's... Continue reading

#5... During the week I'd turn over Rita's words from time to time... "But why is it you're not using your gifts?" ...trying to figure out the truth in them (or not), the relevance (or not), and if my life needed to change at all as a result of taking... Continue reading

Lesson #4 from my trip to Texas... Being among a school of only worshippers and musicians, as you might imagine, meant that we sang a lot. We worshipped a lot. We listened to each other, we gave and received feedback, we prayed and sang and prayed. And of course, we... Continue reading

New bracelet Jeff got me on our trip to Napa. Inscribed with Tolkien on the flip side of the compass: "Not all who wander are lost." All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots... Continue reading

#3... Here's a quick one: I realized last week that I am far more familiar with Hollywood celebrities and rock stars than I am with current worship leaders and worship music rising in churches around the globe. I'm convicted that this, also, must change. While I still love me some... Continue reading

Lesson #1 leads us very quickly to lesson #2, which has to do with my Words for 2014: Listen with patience. As I thought about these words in January, looking forward to my year ahead, I thought to myself that they make sense and appear to be fitting for this... Continue reading

I'd love to, over the course of the next few weeks or so, kind of unpack here some of the things I gleaned from my time in Texas as I have time to get it out, whether simple, practical, funny, deep or fundamentally life-changing. I'm not certain what exactly I... Continue reading

Well, it's complete. I've done what I've come for. DIVE Worship School finished on Friday, and last night and today I attended IF:Gathering down in Austin, a national women's event whose purpose is to "gather, equip and unleash" the next generatino of women into their calling and communities. And let... Continue reading

First day of our school last week, we all flew into 71 degree weather in Dallas. Today, the last day, it's 17 degrees (yes, you read that correctly!) and beginning to snow. Crazy and beautiful things in the atmosphere. Father, may we hold on while you weave your strange and... Continue reading

Sorry I haven't posted much, but we've been SO busy! We had voice session yesterday morning and guitar in the afternoon, which was pretty fun. (My fingertips hurt...) Then last night and this morning we started working on songwriting and had the whole evening tonight to work on our stuff.... Continue reading
