My life is like a good thrift store find. It has to be spruced up a bit now and then, but what a deal.
Interests: Books, book lists, discussing books, reading books aloud to the children, listening to books in the car, book stores, libraries, drinking tea, eating scones, worrying about the children, worrying about the spouse, worrying about the parents who live down the street. I also enjoy writing and maintaining a commonplace book.

Welcome back to Home Alone! Words cannot express my delight at finding myself once again on my own at home. Because I was not Home Alone during the summer months, it felt false to try and write while the children were squabbling, or wrestling, or sighing dramatically in the background.... Continue reading

I like this picture. I think if I could draw my thoughts, they would look a lot like this. Only more crammed together. And I'd never use chalk. Chalk makes your hands feel parched. I never know what I'm going to write about on this blog. I have ideas, but... Continue reading

Suzzallo Library Graduate Reading Room, University of Washington I have actually been to this library. Many years ago, in dire need of an outing, the spouse and I journeyed from our rural state college to the U of W to see what a city college could boast, and this is... Continue reading

Thanks, Michelle! Rachel, I'm sorry that happened to you all. Good grief! Was that just this weekend, too? I bet the girls liked the ride up the lifter! This is another reason why you need to relocate - to be near people who can come to your rescue. : )

Good afternoon and welcome to another week of Home Alone. Reflecting over the recent three day weekend and my activities pertaining thereto, I have come to a conclusion. One of the last things a social basket case should be doing is purchasing car tires. I say "one of" because there... Continue reading

Monotone THE monotone of the rain is beautiful, And the sudden rise and slow relapse Of the long multitudinous rain. The sun on the hills is beautiful, Or a captured sunset sea-flung, Bannered with fire and gold A face I know is beautiful-- With fire and gold of... Continue reading

Ramona the Pest with her beloved doll, Chevrolet (as written by Beverly Cleary and illustrated by Louis Darling in 1968) I am very fond of Ramona Quimby. Especially since she and I have the same haircut now. I have admired her spunk since I was a first grader, but have... Continue reading

Michelle, Thank you for sharing your lovely, encouraging "Hemingway" experience with me. It opened my eyes to look at his story from another angle - I keep wanting ACW-LP to be solely about the possibility of permanent connections, but through your experience, it's easy to see that it is equally about the warmth found during those brief, unintentional connections that we make during the "serendipitous crossing of paths." Your writing is beautiful. Thank you!

Thanks, Rachel! I am glad you are enjoying the posts. I am enjoying the writing of them.

This is a ridiculous photo (flowers in your cleaning caddy? Please. Everyone knows the only things that belong in your caddy -- you do have one, right? -- are cleansers, rags, a duster, and a petite dustpan). However, I chose this picture for the rope. Yep, that rope nestled smugly... Continue reading

A quick update for those of you following yesterday's post re. my potential initiation into the life of a mermaid: no deal. In fact, my hair may be behaving even more obnoxiously than usual thanks to the new styling foam. And now I will have to traipse back to Ulta... Continue reading

Welcome to another week of Home Alone. I hope you have enjoyed an invigorating yet restful weekend. I personally do not love weekends. I don't actively dislike them either, but they veer outside of my established routine enough to make me eye them warily and approach them with care. Ah... Continue reading

Ernest Hemingway 1899-1961 "I am of those who like to stay late at the cafe," the older waiter said. "With all those who do not want to go to bed. With all those who need a light for the night." "I want to go home and into bed." "We are... Continue reading

After being informed by the-younger-brother-with-unlimited-mobile-minutes that the name of my blog, Home Alone, could easily be misconstrued as a site offering racy photos during my time at home, I decided two things. One, that I won't change the blog's name because I can't think of anything else I like better,... Continue reading

What I love best about Mr. Rogers is that he never forgot to put on a cozy sweater. And he was marvelously patient with all those shrill-voiced puppets in Make Believe land. And he really did seem to know and appreciate his neighbors (why would he have sung that song... Continue reading

Unfortunately for the literary world, I am not Emily Dickinson, and therefore am not spinning out reams of stirring poetry whilst I cavort* about my home all day. I do think Ms. Dickinson lived rather a good life, though. Her heart was at home, and she remained true to her... Continue reading

Greetings! Welcome to my small way of injecting some passion into life. I am full-up on purpose (the children, the spouse, the parents, the younger brother w/ unlimited mobile minutes, the home, the pups), but passion...passion is a different proposition altogether. The blog is titled Home Alone because that is... Continue reading
